Long underpants.

It is the season for them again. I love long underpants! They're so comfy and flexible compared to stiffy ol' trousers. Often at home I don't wear anything else, and sometimes I just want to jump and dance with them. I hope my flatmates don't mind. I especially love the ones with stripes and funky patterns.

Long underpants: discuss.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

I'd never EVER wear'em. Unless I wanted to *desexify* myself for my husband. ;-) Do they even exist for women?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

WHy do you desexify? Is thy mate too amorous?

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Saturday, 24 December 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

Heh, no, I said *unless* I wanted to make myself less sexy. But I don't. Especially not now. I already feel very unsexy with my big belly. :-)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 24 December 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

If long underwear would unsexify you to your mate, I guess logic states that short underwear will intensify sexual power! Why is the belly big? Pregnancy or beer excess? Forgive my asking! I am curious. Do you feel unsexifilous when you see your mate in long underwear?

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Saturday, 24 December 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

They exist for women too, though I guess thick pantyhose (the non-nylon type) is what many prefer. I don't think they're unsexy at all - asexy, maybe, but definitely cute.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 24 December 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Saturday, 24 December 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Mike, I'm pregnant. And ate too much as well. My husband does not wear long underwear. :-)

It's practical, I know, but I find it very unsexy. Don't think I'd appreciate my husband wearing long underwear.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 24 December 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd rather my husband wore long underwear and kept all snug and warm than turned into a big sniffly freak plagued by chills all winter. I don't find underwear sexy at all, so practical wins just by virtue of being practical.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 24 December 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

In ye olden times long underwear was unsexy: baggy, itchy, woolen, scarcely ever removed and therefore full of scurf. What could be more offputting to amorous feelings than the escape hatch on the back end of a union suit?

Nowadays, all that is a thing of the past! Modern, clean, ultra-refined long underwear is made from space age fabrics and available in sleek, form-flattering designs. Don't like "boiled lobster red"? Not a problem! Long underwear now comes in a rainbow of colors and prints; from the ultra-feminine to business casual, they've got your style.

So, forget about your outdated notins of long underwear and catch up with the future. Buy some today... and smile.

http://www.whitesquall.com/images/bargoon_stripes.jpg

Yeah, I'd totally find a girl wearing long undies like these cute.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 24 December 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I want some stripey long underwear, mine is just plain dark blue silk, apart from my russian stripey sailor's tops.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 24 December 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Surely 'space age' dates that to some decades ago.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 24 December 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

oh man I would love some stripey long underewear. I have like five pairs of these, they're very nice but they don't come in stripes.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 December 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Ho! My parodic intentions are exposed, like the codpiece in my long underpants.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 24 December 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I would like to have some temple garments. KNow any mormons?
I hate to think of hygeiene of the olden days. People constantly smelled like shiot and they didnt know

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Sunday, 25 December 2005 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but everybody smelled equally like shiot, instead of today where you have one or two odd stinkers to louse up a perfectly good atmosphere. It must have been better or worse for that, but I still can't decide which.

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 25 December 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

For Halloween this year, a male friend of mine showed up in long purple thermal underwear with a hand-drawn anime girl getting a facial emblazoned on his chest. He was a "blowjob fairy." And damn it if he wasn't the hottness.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Sunday, 25 December 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

TS re: terminology -- "long underwear" vs. "thermal underwear" vs. "long johns" vs. "gatchees" (this last one comes from my grandmother, no idea where she got the term)

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Sunday, 25 December 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Got Cheese?

jim wentworth (wench), Sunday, 25 December 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

A must for New York winters (and yet more abominable climes).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 December 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

long underwear is the ultimate secret weapon against the cold.

shookout (shookout), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Got Cheese?

Will mice?

Seriously, I realize my hatred has resulted in legs with a rash. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

A must for New York winters (and yet more abominable climes)

Word up-- I'll be wearing my thermals again when it dips back down to 10 degrees F.

Chris F. (servoret), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

mine's all white, i think i need to buy some fun stuff

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I have never seen the need for long underwear. My feet get cold in the winter, sure, but not my legs, wtf.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

i wear it only out of necessity - they never seem to fit right - too tight (and i'm a thin guy) and the waist area always seems to not go up high enough or something. plus they make me itchy and my leg hair all matted and nasty feeling.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

they're good if you're spending a lot of time walking around somewhere very cold. like mountains in winter. or montreal. or siberia.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

my legs totally get cold! I break out the long underwear like the first day it gets below 50, it's so cozy. Although by spring I'm so happy to put it away.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

You are all SISSIES. Or live in the North Pole, one of the two.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Actually, this is something that's become more of a problem for me since a lost a bunch of weight a few years ago. Before that, I was a lot more tolerant of the cold-- even in my pre-chunkage days I didn't feel the need to layer up all the time.

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

You are all SISSIES. Or live in the North Pole, one of the two.

I think it's both for me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 December 2005 05:47 (twenty years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

It's minus 17 degrees in here at the moment, these are total necessity. These days, when I'm at a friends place, I often just take my pants off and stroll around in my long underwear, because it's so much comfier. Thankfully my friends understand.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

I just want to state this is not a EUROPEAN custom. If I catch my husband in long underpants (sans/with pants), he's out.

BLACK SILK LONGJOHNS, PEOPLE!!!!!!
I am wearing them now. They are warm, comfortable and THEY DRIVE MY HUSBAND MAD WITH LUST!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/129/364334148_2de38ffa64.jpg?v=0

It's a hardy northern european thing. i shall be rocking these this weekend on the fens (probably under a boiler suit).

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

they don't work very well with "trousers," unfortunately. and anyway, if yr not being active when you're wearing them, the warmth and circulatory effects can be a wash at times.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

I love a man in longjohns. It's all about the erotic fun of a boy-girl slumber party.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

They work great with trousers in a base mid shell combination. (or base shell if it is warm enough)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

by trousers i mean suit pants, e.g. i suppose it wouldn't be a problem if yr wearing ice-climbing stuff over your suit pants, but now really

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

They work perfectly well with jeans.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

absolutely. jeans /= trousers in my universe, but perhaps this is not true elsewhere.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe longjohns work better if you're thin or if you don't mind looking and/or feeling like a sausage, but they wouldn't fit under most of my jeans.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Well, obviously it helps if you prefer the baggy style.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

If it's cold enough, baggy is more than a style. It's a survival strategy.

So weit wie knock-kneed (kenan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

it's mainly my feet that get extremely cold, so for a pair of really heavy wool knee socks works better than long undies for me.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Only in burqas. xxp

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, long wool socks are often the way to go, but also often itchier

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

My boss did this the other day, came in and said something about how she was wearing longjohns, but she was still cold. And I was like, that's because your pants are skin tight. Trapping air is the name of the game.

So weit wie knock-kneed (kenan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I repeat. SILK. Very thin. Fine under dress trousers. Really.
As for feet—my son worked at a ski slope, running the chairlift. He swore by that capsaicin stuff.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

silk somehow escapes the static electricity effect?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

yes it does because it's not the sort of polymer you can charge up.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

i knew there was a reason i regretted dropping science (as it were), thanks

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

long wool socks are often the way to go, but also often itchier

there's an amazing kind that costco sells by the 3-pack that isn'tt itchy AT ALL. kind of fleecy, actually, and since they're for men i can pull them up nearly to the knee. i love them, although they're a total fashion disaster.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

My achille's heels, cold-wise, are my hands.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Mainly because I keep taking my gloves off to do this and that because they're so clumsy. Then I have to ball my hand up inside the main part of the glove, and when I get back to my car I can barely use my keys. It takes about 45 minutes for full coordination to return. I am very skinny, that might be a factor. My hands go numb inside the house if the heat's below 65 or 70.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

cue the string section.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Fingerless gloves instead of or as well as bigger gloves is the way forward.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Don't your fingertips freeze, though? I've never understood how that could possibly work.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

they loose less heat, your fingertips will stay warmer for longer. It's all part of the same system (I'm assuming you have a hat on in these situations).

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

but they wouldn't fit under most of my jeans.

i could fit like another me sized person in my jeans.

I'm going out in all my layers right now. The dog is whining at the door. It's amazing how he is comfy in such a wide temp-range. Fur coats rule!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

I like the all-body longjohn lumberjack undersuit things. Me & my pal moved to a house w/a FIREPLACE, and we were so excited we went out and bought matching full-body red thermals and sat around the fire. Oh man those things are great, buttflap or no.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

Union suits!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:21 (nineteen years ago)

I have a union suit. My mother gave me one with my name embroidered on it too. It's ridiculous and undignified but very warm and kind of Civil War-like.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:26 (nineteen years ago)

because the buttflap is crucial for the brokeback brethren.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

I want to get some longjohns before the next cold snap.
