Thank god Christmas is over.

We celebrate Christmas here on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day (don't ask me why), so for me it's over. I visited my mum and dad (they're divorced) and had the usual small talk... "You've grown a beard", my mom said - yes mom, I've had it only for four years. I met some relatives who are perfectly nice I guess, but I have nothing to say to them. In the evening I met an old friend of mine, with whom I've spent the last eight Christmases, and I guess that's one tradition I do like. When I got home I opened my presents; mom gave me a new set of sheets, as she often does, but this time it was actually rather nice, since I've gotten myself a new, larger bed. And that's it. I don't hate Christmas, but I find a bit stressing, a bit awkward, and not at all special anymore, and I'm glad that it's over.

Tumoas, you and me both. My parents are divorced, but helpfully my mum split up from her boyfriend about a week ago, so I#'ve had that in the ear all day. I'm not v. close to my parents, so having my mum go on about her problems isn't too good for me. I guess I SHOULD be nice to my mum, and I will be, out of duty, but it's still horrible. At keast it's out of the way for you - I've still got christmas day AND mostr of boxing day to go. The nearest I can contemplate having any fun is the FAP on the 27th. Never mind.

Sheets are nice - not something you'd rush out to buy yourself. Tuomas, you don't see your mother very often? Me neither. I find it...odd, and I'm maybe a little envious, when it comes to the kind of person that speaks to their parents every day, or even every week.

I totally just accidentally told my mother-in-law that my sister-in-law is pregnant, as in spilled the beans. :(

Parents are luck of the draw. Mine were and are quite loveable. I can take no credit for that.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 24 December 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Christmas with my parents is fun, especially since they've decided it's okay if I sleep in instead of hitting church.

Also, it's apparently acceptable to make slightly off-color jokes with my 62-year old mom. Some of the year's greatest hits include:

1) Macerating the raisins.
2) Making chocolate (yule) logs.
3) Singing the Somerset Wassail song as if incredibly sloshed.
4) The side effects of Rum(my) Balls.

Yeah, I'm kinda envious of people who can actually share things with their parents. My parents live in Helsinki, so I see them fairly often, maybe once in a month or two, but it's not like I could talk to them about how my life really is. It's a bit sad, though I've come to accept the fact that just because someone is family doesn't mean you have to be close to them. Which is why at Christmas, the one day families are supposed to be close, I feel kinda silly.

Today I'm suffering from the official Boxing Day hangover. For years me and my friends have had this tradition, that on Christmas Day everyone who has the chance escapes their families, and then we go the movies and to the pub. Yesterday we went to see the Narnia film and the pub crawl was followed by afterparty, and I woke up this morning hungover, sleeping in the same bed with three hungover friends. This is one holiday tradition I like.

Why does your mom perpetually buy you sheets? Does she think you are...dirty?

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 26 December 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas you are atheist, yes? You should do like me and try to stop using meaningless pop expressions like omg, thank god, heavens! (that last one isn't a problem for most ppl tho hehe). WAGE WAR ON CHRISTMAS wtfbbq

but I'm glad christmas , I mean the holidays , is about over, too.

I think I should take a trip around that time, each year. I would bypass that whole tacky business all together, and come back when things have returned to normal.

my parents' present to was our trip to chicago last week. it was really nice to spend time with them (i don't see them that frequently as we live far apart), especially because there was no one else with us. i didn't have to compete with sisters or aunts and uncles or grandparents. it was a really great time.

i spent christmas eve/morning in buffalo with the extended family, and that was ok - a nice, limited amount of time with the crazies. it was fun, except for when my uncle's friend was talking about going through cancer. he was telling very funny stories, but it freaked me out (i'm sure the booze contributed to this) because my dad just got diagnosed with cancer and doesn't want anyone to know, so i couldn't really explain why i was being weird and had to go in another room for a few minutes to cry and compose myself. i think christmas has become this burden of obligatory gift-giving and it now fills me with dread, but it was nice to see my cousin all excited to open his presents and it sucked that i had to leave at 2 pm to drive back here and go to work. but whatever... i'm just glad it's over for this year, and i'm glad this year is rapidly coming to an end.

I am glad the "oh no we can't wish customers Merry Christmas, it's so horrible" bullshit is over.

i don't really care one way or the other whether someone wishes me a merry christmas, but i've been saying "happy holidays" or "season's greetings" out of habit since i was a wee lass. come to think of it, i like season's greetings better because it doesn't put anyone under pressure to have a happy holiday of any kind. a lotta people dread this time of year and just don't wanna be reminded.

I am just tired of letters to the editor about this so-called 'issue'

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

i'm tired of the conservateers blaming us heathens for killing christmas. this is gonna be a thing EVERY year now, isn't it?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

I first read JBR's post as "every time I masturbate, I kill a kitten."

truck-patch pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Haha. I read something about a Jewish family in whatever year the pope announced that Jews were no longer to be held responsible for the crucifixion...to which the father responds (at the family dinner table) "Thanks God, I haven't slept well in almost two thousand years! but now I can finally relax" (or words to that effect).
