I think it is the 1600's, and they paint portraiture with facial feature pieces together from fruit.

A google of 'fruit', 'venice' and 'portrait' found it in the end - but you were there for me if that had failed, anthony, thankyou!

At one time I had a (photocopy of) a portrait of John Calvin, painted in the style, hanging up on my refrigerator.

Hmm. There's also a children's alphabet book that I remember v fondly that uses this idea. For each letter there's a chosen object (e = eggs, b = books, r = ribbons) and a man or woman built of the object. Very fanciful and detailed but I can't come up with the name -- something Like Market Day but my searches aren't bearing fruit.

I was assuming this was a statement and thought somebody might've started hitting the eggnog a bit early.

I'd never seen this before. Worth the wait. Bit spooky.

The children's book mentioned above by Laurel is On Market Street. My kids have enjoyed it over the years.

I love Arcimboldo. I was going on about him on the Clientele thread last week, since their latest album cover features an Arcimboldo.

Heh, I tried to look at a sample image through Amazon, but I guess Amazon doesn't like to give previews for illustrations in children's books? When I click on the first few pages the text page shows up, but only a few scattered pixels for the first illustration page.
