My father used to eat at Sardi's restaurant in the theater district of NY a lot in the 70's, and recalls an evening there where an obviously drunk Bea Arthur staggers up to him and says "You! It's men like you who spoiled my life!" I love this story.

Sean, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your dad must have some interesting stories. Or so I hope.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yes.

Sean, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bea Arthur is my second cousin.

I'm serious.

We went to see her one-woman show, "And Then There's Bea," in San Francisco a few months ago.

Douglas, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And she's Rufus Wainwright's new grandma.

I love Bea. I've been a fan since her guest appearances on All in the Family. And I keep meaning to go out as Bea on Halloween--we have a similar look--but I never get it together.

I don't know if she's a "lost" comic genius, but I do wish she'd show up on TV more often.

I've never seen The Golden Girls, the show that everyone seems to know her from (ok, maybe I've seen a few minutes of it), but remember her from Maude and a few other things from when I was a lad, and always found her to be pretty droll. I was tempted to see her show here in San Francisco (it only ran briefly) but was kind of embarassed; I knew it would be all middle-aged queens in the audience.

Sean, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, watch it.

Arthur, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Appearance on Malcom in the Middle = classic.

Josh, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Confession time. Golden Girls = funny. There.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brian's secret passion for Estelle Getty REVEALED.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm often referred to the Golden Girls, and not just by gay video store clerks, as the quintessential sitcom whose perfection cannot be bettered.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(?possibly it cd have been bettered by once in a while being slightly amusing?)

mark s, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

One of the funniest television shows ever is the one where they're dealing with the aftermath of being robbed and Rose loses her mind. Blanche's description of accidentally macing herself in the police station is HILARIOUS. The show took the "tell, don't show" aesthetic of your grandmother's best stories and turned it into regular hilarity; the highlight of every episode was the banter around the kitchen table.

Dan Perry, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I surely must've seen more than this one episode in reruns when younger, but for some reason Betty White' "Miami is nice" song got utterly stuck in my head long ago. It reappears unbidden from time to time

Josh, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Famous Bea Arthur's famous words.... God will get you for that, Walter! :)

She was Vera Charles, for God's sake (opp Lansbury on Broadway, I'm not talking about the crappy Lucy as Mame movie).

Isadora was the first bra burner
And you're glad she showed up. (Oh yeah)
And when the country was falling apart
Betsy Ross got it all sewed up.
And then there's Maude
That old compromisin', enterprisin', anything but tranquilizing,
Right on Maude.

You coax the blues right out of the horn, Mame,
You charm the husk right off of the corn, Mame,
You've got that banjoes strummin'
And plunkin' out a tune to beat the band,
The whole plantation's hummin'
Since you brought Dixie back to Dixie land.
You make the cotton easy to pick, Mame,
You give my old mint julep a kick, Mame,

Who makes the fog surrounding the Golden Gate simply disappear?
Phyllis; Phyllis.
Who makes the warning bells on the cable cars play "The Gang's All Here"?
Phyllis; Phyllis.
Who charmes the crabs of Fisherman's Warf right out of their shells?
Who lights the lamps of Chinatown just by walking in view? Who?
Phyllis; Phyllis; Phyllis....
It sure isn't you!

I saw her play a harridan mom in a Woody Allen play at Lincoln Center circa '81. Very convincing.

I'm sure I've spoken before on ILX about my enormous love for Bea Arthur. Not just as an actor, but as a woman. You heard me.

Umm ... Golden Girls is pretty great. God bless those morbid folks at Lifetime for keeping it running.

The Marvel Comics character Deadpool harbors a bizarre obsession with Bea Arthur and seems to consider her particularly sexy.

That took 'em long enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

There's a funny (well, to me at least) anecdote in Jame's Gavin's Intimate Knights about then Senator John F. Kennedy going to a cabaret and trying to get an introduction to either Bea Arthur or Dody Goodman.

Imagine if it had happened! Scariest threesome ever?
