Hollywood needs to bring back the Esther Williams swimming pool epics!

Come on people, Harvey Keitel with sparklers on his head, jumping from a trapeze into a pool of semi-naked women dressed as nuns.

Who's with me here!?!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

There's a big-budget porn take on Pirates of the Caribbean, isn't there?

There are one or two old-school Westerns that come out every year or so. I watched part of Open Range in HD last week, it was as bad as you might expect from a Kevin Costner vanity project.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

In fact, any films warning us about the dangers of nuclear weapons.

Swashbuckling epics (with Pirates of the Caribbean and the occasional remake of The Three Musketeers being the notable excpetions).

What, Cowards Bend The Knee? Does it count as silent if it has a score (and the score is important)?

(xpost)

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

how would that make it different from most silents???

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

are 70s style anti-westerns dead? deadwood's an altogether different beast right? spaghetti westerns killed themselves eventually. zucker style mad magazine laff-a-second flix are done right? (last one i can think of was that jay mohr 'mafia!' one) saddest death of all: mid-nineties style bruckheimer flix.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Ensemble caper comedies

Rat Race was moderately successful.

Silent movies were never really silent, the only diff now is themusic is on a soundtrack. But by the mainstream definition, the middle section of Hou hsiao-Hsien's Three Times is silent. (But yeah I guess Mel Brooks did the last Hollywood one.)

how would that make it different from most silents???

There are many silent films that don't have any score either. If it has that classic "silent movie piano", that was probably improvised and isn't "part" of the movie (although it was probably expected).

But Cowards Bend The Knee is practically a music video (or ten).

Wikipedia suggests that this year's Call of Cthulhu movie was silent.
