anthony, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, you fool. See it twice.

David Raposa, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think it'll probably grate on you. i just saw it the week of christmas and the theater was full of pissy teenagers; the entire back row walked out about halfway through. 10 or 15 more people left a little later. i thought it was great, definitely in the top 3 movies i saw last year.

your null fame, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nice attention to detail, but otherwise slight. Characters had no edge (except for Hackman's but that was because of Hackman, not the writing).

Worth seeing, probably, but I try to see everything.

Benjamin, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just saw it last night. It wasn't terrible, but I got this nagging feeling it tried really hard to be like "Raising Arizona". I stress "try".

At least it didn't turn out to be a LAUGH RIOT COMEDY that force fed GAGS.

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just saw it and quite liked it. Good soundtrack. Great paintings.

bnw, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i larfed non-stop and so did dr vick

mark s, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
I thought it was a great movie, If you think differently you are most likely a Nazi sympathizer and should be arrested.

Dave The Rocker Kline, Monday, 22 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mass Appeal piece by RA the Rugged Man and some NY film professor spent a good deal of time bashing Wes Anderson and some others (or their fans).

Funny, even if I liked most of the films they ragged on.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 22 March 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, royal tenenbaums, the movie i wish i liked.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

liked it more the second time (which was this weekend). Still some annoying hyperdirection and gratuitous narration, but I was prepared for it and was able to focus more on the characters, which I really enjoyed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just so fucking anal

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you picked up a copy of The Anal Tenenbaums by mistake.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the royal ten-in-bums

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

har har

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hate the word 'anal'.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

'Anally retentive' I can just about take, but 'anal' on its own just makes me feel sick. Maybe I've got issues.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I agree with you, N.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree but I don't like it, either.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I still really heart this movie. A lot of people I know were kind of put off that finding emotion and pathos in all the po-facedness was the point, and were annoyed at being told they didn't "get it" if they thought it rang false. Fair criticism, but the emotions didn't ring false for me; perhaps I've been hornswoggled, or perhaps I've just watched too many Hal Ashby movies.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

its crap.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think this movie was overdirected at all (especially compared to something like amelie with all its BANG ZOOM WHIZZ POP WOW effects, arrrgh), and i thought the performances were low-key and lovely. best film of 2001, sez i (even if i liked ghost world more at the time, which i'm not sure i still would).

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 05:39 (twenty-one years ago)

amelie is waaaaaay worse

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

so is ghost world for that matter

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

why's that?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

s1locki we seem to have similar tastes, i agree with it all, man.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think this film is fantastic. Really, it's one of the few times I've seen Gwyneth Paltrow in a movie where I didn't loathe her.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmmmmmm. Soundtrack.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

slocki and jed are the anti-me

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to go with Joe Queenan and say if you don't like this film, you have no heart/are no longer my friend, etc.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the best movies of the past few years. same thing with ghost world.

kephm, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It is good. Weird and cosy at the same time, almost like a children's book.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I always feel like most of the negative criticism of Rushmore/Tenenbaums/etc. is because they're caught between being underground and mainstream, so they aren't cool enough for either. A lot of the hate (but not all) seems tied to hipster quotient.

Esp. the Mass Appeal piece.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen Rushmore, but I enjoyed this. I'm not yet sure if it can hold up to repeats.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

can i say now that i love rushmore & bottle rocket? my conflicted dislike of this film has nothing to do with hipster quotient, i'm not even sure what that means, and to be honest whether a film is underground or mainstream (if it's even possible to make that distinction) doesn't really have anything to do with whether i enjoy a movie or not.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to go with Joe Queenan and say if you don't like this film, you have no heart/are no longer my friend, etc.

He wasn't my friend anyway, I've never met him!

I have this film thanks to a cheap used DVD purchase. And one day I'll watch it even!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't larf non stop but it was still pretty good. i did however dislike its use of music.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's the thing, for all the ballyhoo over the soundtrack i thought the music cues were really poorly used esp compared to rushmore & br.
