It fits exactly on one side of a C90 - suspicion

Spin off from "My Arse Aches". Are there any albums which fit exactly on one side of a C90 - ie 45 minutes long. Actually, I know there is one, The Bends by Radiohead.

And does this make you suspicious?

"diesel and dust" by Misnight Oil does. also, "stop making sense" the old version not the reissued version.

ooooops, Midnight Oil, natch. doesn't make me suspicious, why when i was young i was astonished that not all records fit on one side of a tape!

Doesn't the yellow album by B&S (Fold Yer Hands Child ect) fit exactly on one side of a tape? I might be making this one up. But I'm suspicious of that album in general. It smells of honky fish.

Oddly enough, I notice an awful lot of albums clocking in at 47 or 48 minutes. I also notice the sudden cessation of production of C100 blank tapes. Surely not a coincidence.

Amnesiac clocks in at just over 43 but Kid A is just over 49; largely due to long gap at end of last track with 20-second ambient doodle. Added together comes to a total of 92/93 minutes, so you can't A/B it on a C90.

Coincidence or capitalism?

I'm suspicious of 'An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music' by Spacemen 3.

As you have every right to be.

Wierdly, the pause mid-jam at the end of 'I am the Resurrection', at the end of 'The Stone Roses' - hits practically dead on the 45th minute of the album. A signal to home tapers?

I'm suspicious of C90s in general these days. Yay burners!

Most C90s are actually 47 minutes a side (Maxell XLIIs, definitely).

I believe the Fall's Hex Enduction Hour is exactly an hour long, if you happen to have a 120-minute tape (yes, those are a little longer too).

tapes schmapes.

Servotron: Entertainment Program for Humans (Second Variety), would fit perfectly on one dide of a C60. On the other side I would put Henry's Dress "Bust 'em Green" and still have room to spare! Yay!

pete is WRONG. i remember trying to fit the bends on one side of a C90 years ago and it just doesn't. popping it in the cd player shows that is in fact 48:39 long.

so, what kind of superlong C90s are you using, pete??

Gary Clail/Tackhead's "End of the Century Party" CD is exactly 60 minutes long. Not 60:01. Not 59:59. 60:00. Hmmm.

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely this was meant to be played on a C-60, not a C-120, the thinness of whose tape guarantees many headaches, Daniel-san.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but that would imply that the two halves of the album are both 30 mins long, Tracer, which i imagine is unlikely...

The tompaulin album is only 40 mins long (just right for sticking slender on after it :)). I must say i think all debut albums should be under 45mins, how else are ppl going to hear yr stuff without enthusiastic fans taping it for mates.

A few years ago I would have been able to offer all sorts of contributions to this thread but now I'm all about minidiscs. I'll just offer this: frustrated by the cost of C100s and the 47 minutes and something length of the Velvet Underground & Nico I decided to take the unprecedented move of editing an indvidual track. I pressed pause for about 30 seconds of 'European Son' and I still find it impossible to spot the edit.

i've only edited tracks twice to fit a comp cd. one was just cutting the end off "to here knows when" (as it mixes into next track), then more radically i cut a minute out of the middle of "1,2, ... , 10 barbie dolls" (Pizz 5) and it's beat perfect. yay me.

TBWTAS also fits exactly on one side of a tape, as I recall. International Velvet comes up as exactly 45:00 when you put it in a CD player.

The key point here is, as pointed out above, C90's aren't actually ninety minutes to start off with. If you then factor in a slight variation in tape deck speeds + a slight variation in my vinyl turntable speed you will see that I could easy fit the Bends on.
