Mine died a month or so back, served as a paperweight for a the remainder of its too-short life and then it was stolen from my desk at work (which would have taken a serious archaeological dig to unearth it, actually). It'll cost whoever stole it more to repair than if they'd actually gone out and bought one, so that's some consolation.

This is why you get a store-based warranty for at least a year or two when you buy an iPod... physical damage to an iPod that doesn't show any surface damage can be replaced at that store for a new and updated version of your iPod for nothing -- no "Apple Care" hassles or anything! Granted, you have to buy a new warranty, but that's around, what, $50 compared to $500?

A couple of years ago I dropped my mobile phone into a pint glass of water, partly out of curiosity, partly because I didn't think about what I was doing. It switched off immediately, obviously, but after a night in the airing cupboard it worked again good as new!

I've been told it's turning it on whilst wet that's the real killer, so best let it dry out some more before you try and turn it on again. Have you tried full reboots and all that now it's turning on?

Mine has just stopped turning on now, or freezing at the Apple screen. I occasionally get the sad ipod face but nothing more.

To my knowledge, it hasn't been dropped or had water poured on it or anything. Any tips on trying to resurrect it?

My replacement iPod has now started arbitrarily pausing during songs, even when the hold switch is on. This doesn't ever seem to happen when its sitting still, weirdly, but I've no idea why this could be.

Happened to anyone else?

A Mac is hardware! I think you mean Apple. And yeah, it's the headphones that likely have a short somewhere or (more likely) the connector isn't making contact correctly. The newer iPods pause when you pull out the headphones. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to turn off that feature.

I thought my ipod had gremlins, because it kept turning on and playing the same song while it was switched off and locked. It would do it every day, and it was really annoying me, running the battery down.

It took me a MONTH to realise that I had accidentally put the alarm clock on.

I think that I somehow electrocuted my iPod. I was plugging it into the charger, all the lights flashed a couple of times, and then ... silence. No sound, no display, no nothing.

I'm a little scared of all those Uncle Tupelo songs shooting around the circuitry of my house ala Shocker.

three weeks pass...

My ipod (3rd Gen, I think 40GB monochrome) is giving me a world or pain. It froze and emitted a clicking sound continually. Resetting gave the 'sad ipod' icon. Every attempt to power up resulted in more clicking or whirring followed by the sad ipod icon or the folder icon. I-tunes or the updater wouldn't recognize it. I partly fixed it by banging it quite hard on my knee which I assume freed up the hard disk head or whatever was clicking. It worked fine for an hour or so and then started track skipping and clicking again. I-tunes reported an error with the disk that required restoring back to factory settings, so I did this. I also downloaded the latest versions of itunes and ipod software.

Now THIS is the problem : I can happily upload tracks from my library onto the restored/cleaned hard drive until I get to just over 5000 tracks (about 18GB). When I go further, the upload freezes and eventually I get a 'writing to drive K' error (K is the drive name my PC has assigned to the ipod). Then when I disconnect from the computer, there's a high chance that ALL of the music has disappeared from the ipod and you have to repeat the restore/upload cycle again. I think I did it 3 times before I noticed that it was crashing at roughly the same place every time.

So my ipod is working at roughly half capacity, which I'm pissed off about. Any ideas what's wrong - is half of the hard drive corrupt? If so, why doesn't restoring sort this out? Anyone else seen this?

I have looked at ipodlounge and the 'hitting the ipod' technique appears to be a known fix, but I can't find any mention of the half-capacity crash problem.

Yes. Because it's physical destruction, restoring won't revive the dead parts. (it's just like a computer hard drive, if you look around for HDD errors on the net (you don't need to add iPod to your Google query) you'll find a lot more info)

Basically: it's half dead now and it's only going to get worse.

No warranty - it's 17 months old.

Just been looking at ipodlounge again, and the 'hitting it hard' fix seems to be a well-known and reliable solution to the click of death! It seems that in my case half of the hard drive has been screwed up though. I'm still not convinced that it's totally knacked.

hmmm. your iPod sounds like it's doing exactly what my first-generation one started doing after its unfortunate altercation with a hard stone floor. but at least in that instance i could work out why the disk was damaged. unless the "hitting it hard" fix has actually, er, buggered it? :(
