Go to Rotten Dead Pool, sign up and make your 10 picks during the month of Jan.

Changes to your user profile are allowed for the first 30 days of a game. For the remaining 11 months of the game, you are locked into your choices and no player can join your game. You will score if your pick dies within the first 30 days. However, you cannot add somebody who is already dead to your list and expect to score.

Once you are settled on your list, go to your profile page and paste "My URL" in this thread.

I'll add these to my rss reader and paste updates in this thread everytime it tells me that someone's list has changed.

does it count if you put a bunch of people you know on the list and kill many of them?

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 2 January 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

RULES

I. THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Murdering a member of your list (otherwise known as market manipulation) is not allowed. Players may not cause or otherwise participate in the death of any celebrities. If you cause death to a celebrity on your list, you will be suspended for one (1) year of play. If you cause death to a celebrity on another person's list with the intent to manipulate scores, you will also be suspended for one year. If you attempt to use weapons of mass destruction to kill large numbers of people, some of whom are likely to be celebrities, you will be suspended for one year.

By discounted, I mean forgot, obviously.

Yeah, no Jimmy Savile, amongst others. I like how Pete Doherty has become this year's Pope John Paul II, in some way.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 2 January 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

How likely is that, though? I haven't heard much about him this year, but I didn't get the impression from the post-Libertines news that he was quite Shane McGowan stage, more like "you're going to look 60 when you're 30".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 2 January 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

I've requested they add Alfredo Di Stefano to the database, because the fact that the third greatest footballer ever isn't on there is a moderate disgrace. He'll probably have croaked by the time he gets added though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 January 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, I thought the this game had the same rules as last year's ILE pool, where your score was 100 minus the age of the dead person. But the Rotten site says you only get one point per death. Which rules do we follow? If it's the Rotten rules, many of us would probably want to change their lists.

Elliott Carter
Dick Cheney
Jack Chick
Dick Clark
Ray Harryhausen
Gerald Ford
Bil Keane
Yoko Ono
Margaret Thatcher
Robert Anton Wilson

If we go by the 100-age scoring system, I'll obviously need a veritable massacre.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm tempted to change a couple if we are going for the 100 minus age thing, since I just went for old people. May be worth gambling on a younger but likely candidate (if I can think of one).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

We have got to start getting these in before 12/31. Otherwise, I'm going to add the guy who played Blue to my list.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 5 January 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

See for the ILX 100 minus age version of this, those of us (i.e. me) who picked Sharon BEFORE his latest stroke should get some sort of bonus points.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, if he dies, obviously, I'm not wishing the poor man any ill or anything.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

However, I have dumped Nelson Mandela in favour of Pete Doherty.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

This is exactly why I was going to ask whether the change was considered good form or not.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting. I would be in favour of adding a rule that says you get extra points if you had the person in your list before they got sick. It does mean there's some point to getting a list in early in January, rather than just waiting till the end of the month and seeing who's looking peaky.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 5 January 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

"See for the ILX 100 minus age version of this, those of us (i.e. me) who picked Sharon BEFORE his latest stroke should get some sort of bonus points"

For me, you can count Zsa Zsa Gabor as my choice instead of him for the ILX scoring if you want. I don't mind cheating against rotten.com users as much as I do against you lot (it's not technically cheating I know, but it does feel a bit like it)

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like the idea of bonus points, but I would be open to considering the contest closed as of yesterday and thus eliminating all of the Sharon bandwagon-jumpers (myself included).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, rotten.com brought this on themselves by having a stupid system, so I don't care if everyone takes points off them, but dammit, I thought of Sharon myself before he fell properly ill (I know he'd had a minor stroke last year, but no-one else seemed to think that made him a candidate) and I want that REWARDED!

Yes, I am taking this too seriously :)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, I need to change my Hoffman for ILE. Can I now have my list as:

1 Captain Beefheart 15-Jan-1941
2 Fidel Castro 13-Aug-1926
3 George Clinton 22-Jul-1940
4 David Crosby 14-Aug-1941
5 J. P. Donleavy 23-Apr-1926
6 Jack Kevorkian 26-May-1928
7 Harper Lee 28-Apr-1926
8 Claude Lévi-Strauss 28-Nov-1908
9 J. D. Salinger 01-Jan-1919
10 Margaret Thatcher 13-Oct-1925

Please? No Sharon cheating for me.

I can't change my list on the actual Dead Pool as I'm playing against other people and we agreed not to.

emil.y (emil.y), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

My list for on here:

1 Joseph Barbera
2 Ingmar Bergman
3 Pete Doherty
4 Estelle Getty
5 Olivia de Havilland
6 Frankie Laine
7 J. D. Salinger
8 Zsa Zsa Gabor
9 Margaret Thatcher
10 Norman Wisdom

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 5 January 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

If we are having separate lists for the two systems, then it was Dion (the pop singer) that I swapped out for Sharon.

Jaymc 28 (Rawls)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 January 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, nobody had Barry Cowsill (that I recall) but what if they did? The death was just announced, but apparently he'd been missing since Katrina. I'd be inclined to call it good, personally.

Ailsa has the right idea.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Shall we stage a Schiavo-style "keep him alive" campaign?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

In other "cheating the rotten.com system" news, when I heard that Shelley Winters had died, I went and had a look and discovered that they hadn't noticed she was dead yet, and she was still available for picking. So I did, at the expense of Pete Doherty. Except that now she's listed as dead, I didn't get a point. And I still appear to be able to take her back out again if I want.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, "However, you cannot add somebody who is already dead to your list and expect to score". Loopholes, bah.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

I have dropped Elliott Carter and added Jerry Lee Lewis.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 15 January 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Also, for those of you puling about your picks not being available: I suggested Max Roach through the 'suggest a name' link, and not only is he there now, but 19 people have him picked. So, you can get who you want if you just ask.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 15 January 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, if anyone should live forever then surely Max Roach?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 15 January 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Did anybody have Shelley Winters besides Dave?

Earth to Tuomas: if the fates or fan willpower couldn't keep Elvin Jones alive, it won't work for Max Roach either.
