Foolish attempt to create longest compilation

Using a modern minidisc and its LP 4 function I intend to make a compilation disc of huge proportion. Do I have Wakeman esque delusions or could this turn out to be a masterpiece for our time? I am working with the no same artists in sucession framework. Is this too long for any living soul to contemplate listening to? Am I sending the receiver to their aural DEATH?!

If you put a Bon Jovi song on right at the end, I'm sure that the receiver will listen all the way through.

I've piled huge amounts of mp3s on a disc -- setting it to random makes for a disorienting experience.

LP4 = Darling Buds, Pop Said?

LP4 Rocks! You can fit the whole of the Grateful Dead boxset (12 x CD's/15 hrs music) onto 3 MD's & still have room for a few selections from Dick's Picks!

And then carry it around in your pocket. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Lovely.

Have you got LP4, Dave? It could be the answer to at least one of your problems, ie. Quine Tapes becomes Quine MD. In answer to the original question, even LP2 is too long, especially if you accidentally tape over the fucker.

Moore, you are an old HIPPY ;) for those non-technologically advanced among us (ie me) how long is LP4?

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Curiously enough, Steve, LP4 is exactly 4 times as long as normal, so a 74 min MD becomes 296 mins & an 80 min one 320 mins.

Some say that much compression affects the sound quality but I must be going deaf or something as I can't notice any difference, especially on little headphones.

Quine MD would be fantastic, Peter, if that's you offering :) I have a package to post for you today.

BTW, how did Joe get to H.E. Bates from this question?????

An Old Hippy, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I presume LP4 doesn't have a mono mode (cos it's not really 'true stereo' at that rate?) - that would give you up to 640min.

I guess if you chose a ridiculously low MP3 rate (like 16kbps), you could fit 80-90 hours of material on a CD-R.

Michael Jones, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The four modes on my machine are mono, stereo, LP2 (doubles the length of an MD, Steve) & LP4.

I don't know enough about sound engineering to be able to define true stereo, so can't really answer your query Mike. BUT when listening to the live Dead stuff on (bigger) headphones I can tell where Garcia, Lesh, Weir et al are standing :)

Anyway, MD's are history. Today I shall mostly be listening to my very latest CD acquisition, which is already home & *will* be played half to death, if you catch my drift :)

David, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MEDIA TECHNOLOGY STUDENT ALERT: Stereo (SP) and LP2 modes store the left and right channels completely separately, so by only storing one channel (ie Mono mode), it halves the data and doubles the length of the disk. LP4 uses Joint Stereo, where the L+R channels are combined, using the similarities between them to reduce the amount of data it needs to store, thus Mono LP4 is impossible.

Alix: DO IT DO IT DO IT (and send me a copy). MY LP2 comps get boring v.quickly.

I'm planning on doing the exact same thing Alix, it's my way of spending as little money as possible this week.

chris, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

god alix, i've been working myself up to doing that for a while. basically not a compilation so much as just getting all my cd singles on to a couple of LP4 discs and using random a lot. let's see, 320 mins, average cd single, probs around 10 (maybe 12) mins, about 30 odd singles per disc, maybe more.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Waaaaaaah I don't even have a tape player waaaaah and I am ph34ring I am IN FACT obsolete! I don't have a cd player that works either! Although today I played the Vibri cd in it for the first time and it attempted to play THE GAME ITSELF = HORRIBLE NOISE PH34R at stupidly loud volume.

BTW, seeing as Lixi is not here, I would just like to warn people, on her behalf, about pressing the 'erase all' button.

i am not a starry freemdoom!, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am here, because I can always find ways to procrastinate, even with a deadline so near. Sarah is correct about the dangers of mistaking 'AllErase?' for 'Erase OK?', which I did. I had 60 minutes or so left to record, on a lovely, handcrafted individual track labelled minidisc of epic size, and I accidentally pushed the wrong button. I have not felt quite so upset and disappointed in a very very long time, IF EVER. I feel this was a lesson from GAWD about the fact that I have a tentfull of essay left to write and compiling stuff was not a very productive study method. Also, I haven't reallty noticed any difference in sound quality on LP4 and am not especially fussed about it as I only use headphones. I shall be resuming my mission to create long stuff when I have handed in my doomed to failure coursework.

alix, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the message i get is just "Erase?" and you have to notice the difference between the note symbol (= this track) and the disc symbol (= this disc). LP4 is fine for sound, certainly way better than standard mp3 (which even i can spot)

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

On my MD deck you can undo one step, saving "ALL ERASE?" / "Why Yes! -- NO!!!" nightmares.

I want an LP4 MD so bad. And a plug in keyboard for titling. Or some kind of way to do it via a link up to a PC. Is that possible?

N., Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dunno, but it would be nice, the way of entering letters in at the moment = too tedious for words. I do love my shiny new MD player though, especially as it has lp4.......and a radio! built into the remote control!!

chris, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

minidisc.org knows all.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone found that the remote control on their minidisc to be really annoying and idiosyncratic? Mine has a circular button, one side of is meant to skip forward, the other backwards, but when I press them it just does weird shit, like pressing once will take me to the beginning of the track I'm listening to, but pressing again makes it go forward. Or, I'll press the one that I was sure makes it go forward, and I go to the previous song. There seems to be no logic whatsoever. I'm suspecting you have to be very precise in your pressing, but this seems a little stupid for a remote.

alix, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

With a portable, if you pop the internal battery out after doing something regrettable like 'Erase All', it neglects to update the TOC and so yr music is saved. I don't suppose, Lixi, that there's really any chance that: [a] you've had the machine powered up ever since your deletion and
[b] you haven't performed any further operations Thought not.

Michael Jones, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No. No, I haven't. I am slowly getting over this though. Next time I will be more careful. And there will be a next time.

alix, Monday, 14 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mean, I have used it. Oh, You KNOW WHAT I MEAN :)
