Max Clifford c/d

I'm reading Read All About It at the moment, his auto/biography written with Angela Levin. And it's such a heap of shit. It's sole purpose appears to be solely to say what a bloody great guy Max Clifford is. The first four or five chapters can be summed up as:

Max Clifford is great in bed; the working classes love Max Clifford; Max Clifford does TONS of work for charity (but doesn't ever talk about it you understand?); every celebrity ever loves Max Clifford; Max Clifford had sex with every girl he ever knew and more besides; Max Clifford is WAY funnier than you; Max Cliford is just naturally great at doing stuff; Max Clifford loves his daughter far more than lowly little you could ever understand; Max Clifford constantly cheats on his wife but hey it's ok, she understands because it's Max Clifford, and so on.

And yeah, I know I know 'PR Man In Self-promotion Shockah!' but jeez, he could have done it better than this. It's written in the third-person so it comes across even more arrogant - like Max is so shit hot that his true brilliance could only come across from someone elses POV.

Before reading it I had a lot of admiration for the guy's success but this book is hard to stomach. The 5% of factual info in there is pretty interesting (anyone else think the tabloid editor who dallied with the two young girls is Piers?) but you have to wade through an oilslick of self-serving gloop to get to it.

Weirdly, I remember this getting pretty great reviews when it first came out. Is it because every journalist out there is terrified of the guy?

And yeah, I absolutely loved The Insider.

Also, use this thread to hate on him and discuss his impact on tabloid journalism. Is there room for another Max Clifford or is that precisely why he's so successful: he's the only Mr Fixit out there, if there were others his role wouldn't exist?

He's like Tony Curtis in Sweet Smell of Success except uglier and cuntier.

Clifford is a British public relations legend / tabloid scum, depending on who you ask. More at the BBC, where he's mentioned sometimes on Have I Got News For You, if I remember correctly.

Ah, apologies for the UK-centricity. Max Clifford is... (from Wikipedia)

----

Max Clifford is a British publicist. Although his client range is varied, he is a controversial figure for sometimes representing unpopular clients (such as those accused or convicted of crimes) and acting as agent to people selling "kiss-and-tell" stories to tabloid newspapers. He openly vowed to bring down the government of John Major because he felt the National Health Service was mismanaged.

As a young man he was a press officer for EMI, and helped to promote The Beatles early in their career. He has represented other celebrities including Jimi Hendrix, Muhammad Ali, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, David Copperfield, O.J. Simpson and Mohamed Al-Fayed. Lesser-known clients include brain-damaged boxer Michael Watson, former MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson, and Tony Martin (a Norfolk farmer imprisoned for fatally shooting a burglar).

Lately he helped expose Jeffrey Archer. In 2005, he paid damages to settle defamation proceedings brought by Neil and Christine Hamilton after he represented Nadine Milroy-Sloane, later found to have falsely accused them of sexual assault.

In July 2005 he told reporters that he would not represent Michael Jackson after being found innocent of child abuse charges. He said, "It would be the hardest job in PR after Saddam Hussein".
