Getting rid of old PC monitors

I've just bought a new PC and now have an unwanted 17" CRT monitor lying around the place.

I'm presuming that these things have zero value now (?), so what's the best way to get rid of it? I'd rather not dump the thing, so are there any (UK) charities that make good use of old monitors?

I believe new legislation came into place last August which states that either (I forget) the people you bought the new computer off or the people you bought the original monitor off are obliged to remove and recycle the old CRT from your possession. I can't remember details, but I remember our systems admin guy telling us about it - it's applicable to all sorts of electrical goods. A quick google should turn something up.

or find someone whose laptop screen's knackered and they can't afford to get it fixed and give it to them. i think there are reuse!recycling charities for it too though.

My old monitor needs getting rid of as well - any Oxford people have any use for a massive 17" IBM monitor? Does the business, if a little huge for my desk.

Perhaps I should just phone the council. Maybe they dish them out to local schools, or something?

I disposed of an old knackered monitor myself this week. It must be the season for it.

I took mine to the local Council Rubbish Tip and threw it in. It landed with a very satisfying crunching sound.

I took mine to the computer refurbishment department at work, we have to pay a company to dispose of them nowadays! 17-inch ones still get sold as part of the cheap pc packages they put together, mine was only a 15-inch though.

Mrs tN used this company to get recycle her steam-powered old computer and monitor recently. They charged a fiver to pick it up.

This does sound satisfying, but CRT monitors are full of nasty toxins like pounds of lead, so if you can't find a scheme that will reuse them, your council should at least provide safe disposal/recycling facilities.

westminster council tries to charge 20 squid for removals! i went and left mine at the end of my road at 3am :/

I'm in the same situation. I believe Oxfam accepts old monitors but so far I haven't been able to find out how/where to drop it off.
