How often should you change earrings?

I've worn the same pair for about two years now, am I unstylish? Should guys have separate pairs of everyday and festive earrings too?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

you should probably check to make sure you haven't grown a vagina somewhere.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

???

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

'festive' as in fucken sleigh bells?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

"What's this in my armpit? It looks like... oh. Oooh... Oh yeah..."

Dan (And So On) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, I meant ones you wear on special occasions. What's the word for that?

(x-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really know much about what's cool in guys earrings, but maybe you should alternate studs with hoops? No danglies though.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

does wearing a pair of earings make you more gay or more guido?

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

'occasional earrings', i guess.

I have a rhinoceros called Guido.

Going out earrings?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't like studs that much. Right now I have two simple hoops with no decorations at all, one bigger than the other. Maybe I could change just the other, get a ring with a nice pattern or something.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

What's "guido"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know, I just thought it was a nice name for a rhino. It suits him.

Maybe it's a derogatory term for Italians?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

What's "guido"?

A pair of earrings, apparently.

Dan (One Earring Is "Gangsta") Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, back to your earrings - I don't think anyone would notice if your hoop had a pattern or not. From a distance they all look pretty similar.

Maybe try a different colour of gold? Rose gold perhaps?

These are both chrome coloured. It'd look a bit silly for them to be different colour from each other, but yeah, maybe I could buy a new pair of gold coloured earrings.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

As a jewellery I always advise people to take their jewellery off when going to bed (and also if you take a shower/bath).

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

Why?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

gremlins.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey! I've got a pair that I haven't changed in... ::quick mental calculation:: 13 years!

No, that's a lie, Joe took them out once and swabbed my ears with antiseptic, claiming they were infected and manky, but he was always criticising me.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

i take my earrings out to clean them occasionally, but barely ever change them.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

why take them out to sleep or bath? shit, i only take mine out when they get ripped out by my hair or my bedspread or whatever. or once when i had some x-rays.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

...or tripping over a swimming pool and falling down stone steps, IIRC!

The Lidl Shop Of Horrors (kate), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever been focused enough to think about removing an earring while falling down the steps.

I'm close to convinced that Jess has actually written all of the posts on this thread.

*cough* I was about to say... (god, what a horrible afternoon)

I took my earrings out a few months ago and just never put them back in again - how long can I leave them out before needing to get them re-pierced?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

I've managed to fall down steps without spilling my pint, if that counts.

I Am Sexless and I Am Foul (noodle vague), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I never have them off either, except if they accidentally come off. Yet my ears seem to be perfectly fine.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

that wasn't an earring, that was an eyebrow ring! and it wasn't a horrible afternoon, was it? it was a good party. adam alphabet in a skirt and all.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Well, that doesn't quite beat the story of my friend, who years ago managed to accidentally sniff the backpiece of hear nose piercing down her nose. She sorta panicked, and wasn't quite sure whether the piece was stuck in her nose cavity or whether it had gone down her throat. It was quite late, but eventually I found a number for a 24 hour healthcare help line, and called there on her behalf, because she quite couldn't. Even though it was serious situation, she was scared and all, I had a bit of trouble not breaking into laughter when I asked the question, "If you accidentally snort the backpiece of your nose piercing inside your nose, will it stay there, or will it go through your digestive system?". The woman on the other end sounded kinda amused too, but she assured me that the backpiece was already in my friend's stomach. The knowledge of that calmed her down.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

ah yes, it was a great party - i just meant that bit with the blood and the a&e and the pain and the falling and the worry - that bit was horrible.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

aren't you not supposed to wear a backpiece on a nosering? i'm pretty certain i never have... mine is just a normal earring with the stem bent. you can get special curly ones for noses too but i can never get them in properly and they tickle.

xpost charlie i told you there wasn't any pain! there was just a lot of blood. i SWEAR it didn't hurt. it tickled like fuck when they were putting the stitches in though. and i'm sorry about the worry :(

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

What happened, may I ask? Did you accidentally rip your eyebrow ring?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

about 5 years ago (?) emma went completely arse over tit while trying to get out of a very slippery paddling pool, while three sheets to the wind, in someone's paved garden in north london...the world slowed down as we watched her whack her head on a paving stone and collapse in a heap on the floor. there was, as she rightly says, blood EVERYWHERE from a gash to her head, the impact of which ripped out her eyebrow ring. Luckily, shitloads of wine = teh greatest local anaesthetic!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 5 January 2006 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

dude you make it sound far worse than it was! thing was my hands were holding my jeans up out of the water in the paddling pool so when i tripped over the edge there wasn't time to get them up to break my fall and my eyebrow landed on the corner of the wall by the steps i was going to walk down. i sat up and turned around to find everyone looking at me in horror so i said "no i'm fine! it's ok! look nothing hurt, nothing broken! i just banged my head a bit!" but they kept staring in horror so i looked down at myself and i was covered in blood (cos yr head bleeds like fuck, right, cos of the heavy blood supply there). kate took me to a&e and they gave me STITCHES! which i loved. now there's an ickle triangular rip in my eyebrow! you can barely see it these days but there's been one cool effect, which is that sometimes if i gently scratch/tweeze around the area (yes yes hur hur, i said area) of the scar, i feel it not there but somewhere up near my hairline. eek! some nerves must've got twisted around a bit.

five days later i had to get my wisdom teeth pulled out so i was walking around with a bandage over my eye and a bruised, swollen jaw. then people kept looking at me with pity which was just the worst thing ever, i kept wanting to yell that i wasn't a battered woman, just a bit unlucky that week.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 5 January 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

It was scary as f*ck Emsk. All that blood!

...and the bloke on the roof dressed like Telegram Sam. What a mad party.

The Lidl Shop Of Horrors (kate), Thursday, 5 January 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

but nathalie, why should we take our earrings out before showering/bed etc? i am a bit bothered by this, although if i were to actrually do it i would spend about 24 hours throughout the rest of my life fiddling with my earrings, and i'm not sure i'm prepared to do that.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

As a jewellery I always advise people to take their jewellery off when going to bed (and also if you take a shower/bath).
As a jewellery WHAT???

I don't know why this happens, but I always have a typo when I want to say I'm a jeweler. ANYWAY... lots of people get infections because they leave their jewellery in for a long period of time. Also it's just better to take your jewellery off because, especially when you go to sleep with bracelets/necklaces, you get wear 'n' tear (?). Another thing: it gets SO FUCKING DIRTY. Take'em out and look closely. No, taking a shower doesn't clean your earrings (or rings,...). Recently some client came to complain that her earrings did not remain straight when she kept'em on in bed. If I had been there when she told this, I would have asked if she needed to brush her hair every morning after waking up. Stupid cow. But hey if you don't like taking it out, keep it on. :-)

Oh yes, definitely take'em out if you swim a lot: chloride *eats* (or would that be corrodes?) the metal in the long run.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

(Oh yeah, most people keep their wedding rings on. I never do. I'm scared to death I'll end up like one of my clients who have to get their ring sawn in two because they've gained so much weight, they can't take the ring off anymore... )

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

thank you! i thought that would be it. i give mine a clean whenever they fall/are torn out and i think it happens often enough for them to be ok. and they're cheap enough that i don't mind about wear & tear.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

When I was young we used to call small hoops 'sleepers'. I don't know how common that is, or if it's meant to mean you can sleep in them, but I did.

I don't wear earrings anymore but the jewellery I do wear, I keep on all the time. i have one piece of jewellery from the three most important people in my life, and my watch. I haven't taken my anklet off in five years.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

the concept of wearing an anklet just.. confuses me

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 5 January 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Well in the summer I wear skirts or dresses, sandals or trainers - no socks, so it's visible. I don't take it off at other times cause it means a lot to me.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 5 January 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I take my earrings out at night, because it's uncomfortable getting stabbed by them.

Earrings are my absolute weakness, I love them. I have hundreds of pairs (no silver because I don't like the colour, no costume jewellery because nickel makes my ears itch, so all just gold ones). Today i am wearing some little star shaped amethyst studs. They're cute.
