Belle Gunness (1896-1908) aka "Lady Bluebeard" was the first 20th Century Black Widow. She was never brought to justice. On a farm outside of Chicago, she killed 49 people, including multiple husbands, ranch workers, and children who were put up with her thru adoption agencies. Most of the people died from poisoning, diagnosed as acute colitis, although many others met with freak accidents on the farm. Toward the end, she collaborated in an arson cover-up with one of the ranch workers who was also set up as the patsy while she faked her own death. The patsy died in prison, innocent of any crime other than the arson he participated in.

Marie Alexandrine Becker (1877-?) was a Belgian mass poisoner responsible for the deaths of her husband, lover, and several elderly women who patronized the dressmaking shop that she had opened.

Becker had been married to a cabinetmaker and was seemingly bored and restrained in the marriage. A chance meeting with a man named Lambert Beyer, a known womanizer, opened up an insatiable sexual appetite in Mrs. Becker. Her new experiences apparantly gave her impetus to dispatch with her staid, reliable husband. She implemented digitalis and used it to this end. After boring of Beyer, she dispatched him in the same manner. She took to dancing in clubs with her temporary lotharios and paying them for various sexual services. She coldly informed a friend who was looking to rid herself of her husband that "I can supply you with a powder that will leave no trace". This woman went to the police and Maria was arrested.

Marie Becker was known to attend the funerals of her victims and to gesticulate wildly her grief over their passing. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Hélène Jegado (1803-1851) was a French domestic servant and serial poisoner. She murdered at least twenty-three people with arsenic between 1833 and 1841 and in 1851.
