Where are you again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod, I'm jealous. that looks fantastic.

Did you remember my peppermint crips? ;-)

(South African music was better when there was still the embargo and they only played local music.)

Also... the FEINBOSS!!! THE FEINBOSS!!! I remember my gran used to get very excited about the Feinboss.

Sorry, I spelled that wrong. My granparents are spinning in their graves at my lack of knowledge of the spelling of Afrikaans Botanical terminology. Feinbos.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Thursday, 5 January 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

They all spell it Fynbos round here.

(pepermint crisps purchased).

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Did you remember my peppermint crips?

You gangsta you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Fynbos? Surely not! That looks Welsh and it's an Afrikaans word. Blimey.

Mmm, peppermint crips. Twee candy coated gangstas.

I'm trying to think if there's any more botanical points of interest I can direct you to, but the other Gi11i1@nd memorial stuff is in PMB and Durban.

Have you been round any Stellenbosch vinyards yet? Num num! The tasting sessions.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm keeping the spelling I know, but Fynbos is pretty, too:

It's all about the Proteas... man, I wish you could bring some of them back with you. But there's rules against all that.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

YEs indeed num num tasting sessions. I have some pink wine (and red) for a future occasion, although I have promised myself a dry rest of january, (surely going out the window as I have to go to Paris next week).

I almost bought some proteus seeds yesterday but then there are the rules. (also would they grow in streatham?)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I have so many cute panguin photos.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

You can bring the seeds! The seeds are safe! It's the flowers you can't bring back, dried, preserved, fresh or otherwise.

However, recreating the Cape microclimate on the windowsill might be hard.

God, Stellenbosch vineyards are great, aren't they? I have such fond and fuzzy memories of them. My dad and I weaving our way down a great avenue of trees while my mum and gran fussed because they'd gone on the vinyard tour while my dad and I sat in the tasting room and got zozzled.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Aaaah, the vinyards, how lovely!

Though what's going on with the mountain there, are they burning off the feinbos?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

There's a big Fynbos fire (not that one but a few valleys over) and that one both started by someone burning rubbish and it getting out of hand. Apparently they will get sent the bill for fightin the fires (currntly over a million Rand).

Ed (dali), Saturday, 7 January 2006 10:32 (twenty years ago)

He's right, y'know, it is fynbos. But I giggle every time I read "Ah! The Feinbos!"

These are beautiful pics -- thanks for the links on the "wdyll?" thread, Ed! They made me realize there are many things I miss about SA -- the sky, the wine, the people... Even the veld fires. I was in Joburg over Christmas but it ain't a patch on the Cape.

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Monday, 9 January 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

My granny was a botanist and she called it Feinbos, so I shall, too. :-)

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

With enough frequent flyer miles, you could have endless summer forever.

andy ---, Monday, 9 January 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Out of curiosity, is it pronounced differently if spelled with a Y?

My gran definitely pronounced it "FEIGN" (as in pretend) boss.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Yep, yer granny was spot on with "feign"! All "y"s in Afrikaans are pronounced long a (if that makes sense).

And I also meant to agree with you (wayyyy upthread) about the music embargo thing -- now the radio just plays the same bollocks you hear everywhere else :-( I wonder if they even still have the 25% SA content requirement.

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

That would make sense, as its like the Dutch ij dipthong? (Though that I could never quite master as it seems to be somewhere between "feign" and "fine")

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

We need to organise a mint crisp handoff. I am in paris, having a houroughly rotten time. My laptop was knicked in the banlieu and I spent the evening in a police station.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 16:46 (twenty years ago)

You're kidding me! That's awful! Was it a work laptop? Will it be replaced?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Work one, yeah. Will be replaced but it still sucks. I lost the remainder of the SA photos ( although the best 600MB are in Flickr).
