One nation UNDER GOD?

Could this have been said wrong? There are many nations under God, and He watches over all of them.

Gale Deslongchamps, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That surprised me.

One could say "one of the many nations under God," or one could leave out the God bit.

Maria, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gale I think it's a Civil War reference (i.e. "we are not North and South we are United"). Wasn't it the Republicans who added the "under God" part in, what, help me out here, the early 60s I believe? And there it has stayed, the cause of many a PTA meeting furore.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just found that bit of info online about a month ago. For some reason, I am remembering it as 1958, but that doesn't mean I'm right, nor am I trying to correct you. What I am wondering, though, is why it was added. Who are they to add that? If they wanted "under god" in there, they would have put it in the first time.

Nude Spock, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I omitted "indivisible" in that other thred - the most magical and mysterious word!! It was like invisible but even MORE invisible! Damn this must be some kool kountry!!

Spock, "they" is doing a lot of work there. I think the Republicans were just making a cynical play for religious votes. I just found a v. interesting and informative history of the Pledge wherein it is revealed that its Baptist author was cousins w/none other than utopian novelist Edward Bellamy!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Admit it, you're all shocked.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Bellamy's granddaughter said he also would have resented this second change. He had been pressured into leaving his church in 1891 because of his socialist sermons."

I like the U.S.A. because it's my neighbor and some of my family originated from there. I am very happy & proud to be a Canadian as well. However, when I was in school I pledged allegience to the Union Jack which is the flag of England. We have 2 flags here now, and they have been a sourse of a lot of trouble.

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...has turned into one nation, under the influence of ONE DRUG. TELEVISION, the drug of the nation etc etc. ah, gil scott- heron/michael franti...

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(taking sides: TV vs Michael Franti)

mark s, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The day I can twist Michael Franti's ear and have Doctor Who or Iron Chef project out of his eyes is the day that Michael Franti beats television.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You won't know until you try it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fritz, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one nation under gods perhaps might have been better

geoff, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or under dogs. ho ho.

Ronan, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Fritz :) Yes we have two flags here as I am in Quebec/ Canada.

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi Ronan BITE YOUR TONGUE! Moi.

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Best thing about US = none of the C18th founding fathers were Christian.

DG, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You get people arguing otherwise here, though -- indeed, just read a book review about a new volume specifically talking about the Christianity of the Founding Fathers. Some particularly gone theories have the Constitution as a 'divinely inspired' document, eg the word of the Lord -- which must make the amendments over the years a bit troubling to them.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

uh, yeah... is there something wrong with "they"? They. Them.

Nude Spock, Sunday, 13 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spock you said "they" would have put "under god" in there if "they'd" wanted to and all I meant was that "they" has a lot of meanings here. 1st this is the Pledge to the flag of our country, and it apparently requires an act of congress to get it changed. In this case, the author ("they") is - technically - the entire voting population of the country. The original author though, wasn't a "they" at all but a radical socialist Baptist named Bellamy. And some co-authoring was done by the Knights of Columbus when they lobbied their republican buddies in Congress to add "under God".

They say it's going to rain.
They say fruit is good for ya.
They say persnickety people have complexes.
They say to use specifics, they say to name your sources.
They're talkshow hosts, journalists and school teachers.

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Y'all quoting more King Missile?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh, not intentionally. Did I just lift a lyric?

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King Missile have a song called "They," see.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...the Union Jack which is the flag of England.

We better check that with Marcello.

Sam, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sigh....

Sarah, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What? What? See what reading your posts gets me? Paranoia about my own pedantry.

Sam, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely it should be one nation UNDER A GROOVE.

After all, wasn't George Clinton made President of the USA? Or was that just a very funky dream I had?

Trevor, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, that comment wasn't directed to you Sam, it was agreeing with your pedantry - and that's not exactly pedantry coming through there - it was a BLOODY GREAT BIG CLANGER you couldn't miss. Flag of England yeah okay right, sigh. Ohhh I give up everybody hates me waaaaaaah.

Sarah, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fret not Sarah, I chose to ignore said clanger but I did do a big sigh at my desk. on the tone of the header quote though, wouldn't it all be better if the word "just" was added at the beginning as, if said deity was indeed omnipotent as often quoted then he'd be causing havoc in all of them?
