What's funny (maybe ridiculous is a better word) is that WE know that, but the morons making the decisions about what to teach in school apparently don't.

There are now literally DOZENS of studies showing that abstinence only-type sex ed is, for all intents and purposes, useless for its intended purposes, and they still refuse to see that.

petlover, Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's just useless at the current dosage. What this report proves is that teh modern kids of today need MORE abstinence-only sex ed!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Of course they start earlier, kids have curfews!

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

i guess as righteous folk we're gonna have to step up and fight back with stronger propaganda. "if you have sex before marriage, your penis will fall off" or "your vagina will turn into brussel sprouts" (kids hate vegetables right?)

I grew up in Canada, and there definitely was NOT an abstinence only approach.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 5 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

"Maybe it's just useless at the current dosage. What this report proves is that teh modern kids of today need MORE abstinence-only sex ed!"

No. It would be better to educate adolecences on the risks involved in sex, and precautions involved, rather than telling them outright that abstinence is the only way. Naturally, these adolecents will eventually become sexually active, even if not right away, and by the time they are at that stage... they won't know what to do, and can only turn to friends, and other sources that may not be accurate. It's important for teenagers to know about contraceptives to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and to decrease the amount of young mothers who didn't practice safe sex.

petlover, Thursday, 5 January 2006 03:04 (twenty years ago)

I more or less had abstinence thrust upon me as a teen.

xpost

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 5 January 2006 03:09 (twenty years ago)

I say tell abstinence is an option, but if they are going to sexually active, then here are the risks, and here are ways to protect yourself those risks. I really have nothing against promoting abstinence, because I think sex causes so many problems for teenagers, not even taking into account diseases and such. But, if we are going to be realistic, teenagers are gonna fuck. I really doubt that honest sex-ed has been the biggest factor in the earlier sex statistics.

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

Sex also causes a ton of problems for adults, of course.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:18 (twenty years ago)

"your vagina will turn into brussel sprouts"

This is pretty much the line we got in our ninth-grade health-class venereal-disease horrorshow! Alternately "your penis will become a cauliflower."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

I think truly honest sex-ed might promote absitence without even mentioning it.

Planned Parenthood came to my high school twice and let us touch all forms of birth control, showed us how to put on a condom and put in a diaphragm. We also played a game where we'd pair up boy/girl and draw a slip of paper that represented having unprotected sex. The paper said whether or not we got pregnant (odds 1 out of 7). That was enlightening.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah for sex!

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

And abstinence!

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

at my catholic girls' school, we watched some kind of ultrasound type video of a termination which purported to show the foetus trying to get away from the curette instrument. also the teacher held up a cardboard display with different forms of contraception glued to it at the front of the class (not letting us look at it more closely) and told us that IUDs give you uterine cancer, and that any sexual activity not for the purpose of procreation (e.g. masturbation or premarital sex) was mortally wrong. aaaaah catholic propaganda, how i loved thee. i hope there is a more responsible approach these days.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:27 (twenty years ago)

yikes! my catholic friends seem pretty grounded when it comes to sex. but i think things are probably a bit different in Canada. the fear/intimidation approach never works.

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

My parent gave me the, I guess, more Anglican approach, which was, sex is great, but for marriage. I didn't really take that approach, but looking back, I respect the fact that they said what they did.

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:31 (twenty years ago)

Did the nuns teach you about the joys of anal sex, or do Catholic girls just figure that loophole out on their own?

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

loophole is an interesting word to use there

Every sex education debate I've ever seen on the internet:

Group 1: Let's indoctrinate other people's children about sex in this manner. We should definitely teach them to share my values on sex.

Group2: That's the wrong way and you're indoctrinating them with the wrong values! Study _______ proves your values wrong! We need to teach less math and English and "real" subjects to children and we need to teach them about sexuality in this manner with these values during school hours!

Group1: O RLY?

Group2: YA RLY

I stopped being a catholic when in the same week that I had spoken at a pro-Clinton rally representing NOW and the pro-choice movement I went to mass and was subjected to catechcism students discussing how abortion led you to hell.

I expected lightening to strike my dead right there in the church. Since it didn't I took that as a definite sign that my Catholic days were done.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 5 January 2006 05:43 (twenty years ago)

But being struck by lightning in a church would be a pretty fucking great way to go!

You must have known before that Catholics are pretty vehemently opposed to abortion and that people will use whatever ridiculous/insenstive/irrational language to make their point. They always have.

The pro-life organization at my university used some pretty offensive tactics to argue their position (ie. large photos of aborted fetuses), but, then again, some of the pro-choice group created a human chain-link fence around the pro-lifers, shouting insults at them, and two of the pro-choicers attacked the pro-lifers. So, yeah, it got a bit heated.

If only there was some passion when it came to this subject!

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 05:55 (twenty years ago)

You must have known before that Catholics are pretty vehemently opposed to abortion and that people will use whatever ridiculous/insenstive/irrational language to make their point. They always have.

I believed in that mythical beast the liberal Catholic. I thought that in America, especially in Austin TX, we could see a new Catholicsm being born. But I was wrong. I attended a Catholic wedding last summer and outside there was a table set up with pamphlets saying "You can't be pro-choice and Catholic". Gotcha.

I made a round of rallies during Clinton's first run and I usually went back to back with an older women representing the pro-life side. She had started out pro-choice, had an abortion and then switched. That always pissed me off, her using the age and wisdom trump card. Shit, having an abortion myself just further convinced me how essential that right is.

I also formed a human chain in front of a Houston clinic and was hit by a priest.

ahh, the good ol' days.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 5 January 2006 06:00 (twenty years ago)

that mythical beast the liberal Catholic.

Mssrs Kennedy, Kerry, and Colbert would like a word about that

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 5 January 2006 06:08 (twenty years ago)

Hey Miss Misery, I am really sorry about your horrible experiences with Catholics. As a baptized and confirmed Anglican (when I was confirmed I was an angry, devout atheist with long hair and a Rage Against the Machine t-shirt)I have to say that sucks. Part of the reason I started going back to church was because one of my best friends, who happens to be gay, kept on telling me how he had recovered from years of abuse and persecution by meeting an Anglican priest (who happens to be a lesbian) and talking through his problems. He found something healing, redemptive and meaningful in faith, and I have the same thing. So there are good priest out there. Not all are hell-fire-and-brimstone-pro-choice-punchers! (So much for turning the other cheek, hey?)

There is a lot about Catholicism that attracts me: the intellectual history, the aesthetics, the mysticsim, but the underlying truth that you either believe the doctrines of the Church or you are not a "Real Catholic" really troubles me. That being said, I have Catholic friends who I deeply respect.

So there you go, liberal Christians don't give up the fight. Fuck the haters.

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 06:10 (twenty years ago)

a column about a woman who died last year. kind of gets into the blossoming and receding of american liberal catholicism. the last graf:

But could it also be a last hurrah for a demographic, as the marketing people like to say, a socioeconomic slice of American Catholics, that has been central to the church for more than half a century? Patty Crowley and her peers never doubted that the church had something to say, but after 1968 they began to wonder whether it was interested in listening. For millions of their children and grandchildren, that doubt apparently looms larger and larger.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 5 January 2006 06:12 (twenty years ago)

There are many liberal Catholics in practice, and many Kennedy Catholics, but in theory, liberal Catholicism seems problematic/contradictory as Catholics are supposed to believe in the whole papal infallibility/ doctrinal infallibility thing and, as we all know, the last two popes have been not been liberal, at all.

Freud Junior, Third Cousin to Chuck Norris (Freud Junior), Thursday, 5 January 2006 06:21 (twenty years ago)

I think it's funny that a thread about teen sex has turned into a discussion about liberal Catholicism. Kind of make sense in a way.

I was an education major for a while, but I hated it and switched. For a while I researched this subject. As disgusting as it is, like all other political issues, there's a lot of people trying to confuse it. Just as many studies show that abstinence only education doesn't work, there's just as many conservative studies showing the exact opposite. One I looked at a lot was a Heritage Foundation (try not to laugh) project showing how much of an amazing success absitence only education is. Fancy that!

Children were very promiscuous in the early 70's. All the kids on the estate where I lived, including me, were swingers from the age of about four. We did it all. We didn't know what it was, but we did it.

ratty, Thursday, 5 January 2006 07:18 (twenty years ago)

i was at a trial once where a lawyer was arguing that his client had been traumatized as a child (which was actually true, parents were speed freaks and such). but one of the things he introduced as evidence -- which his client recounted from the stand, trying to sound wounded -- was a time when he was 14 and his 18-year-old babysitter and her 16-year-old sister seduced him. i was watching the men on the jury, looking for signs of sympathy.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 5 January 2006 07:35 (twenty years ago)

if our society allowed teenagers(and adults for that matter) to embrace their sexuality and them that it was acceptable to do so, they'd be a lot more mature in that area. As it is right now, society (or, more accurately, the adults), through mechanisms imposed upon teenagers such as abstinence only, force them to treat it as something that should be hidden or kept in a secret place. They appear immature about it because they're not allowed to treat it in a mature manner

alma, Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

When my future children reach their teenage years, if they start flashing their hidden/secret places all over town they are getting grounded.
