RJM and I will be in Portland for the weekend. Heavy Powell's action and the Northwest Animators thing at OMSI are on the agenda so far. Anyone FAP downtown Fri or Sat? Also, restaurant suggestions for the omnivorous welcome.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

Ah, easy -- Nicholas. That's the actual name of the restaurant. If you don't have at least one meal there, you are denying yourself big time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

Citysearch page on said place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 January 2006 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh, that does look good! Thanks Ned!

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm down for saturday night. i recommend the dim sum houses in chinatown, or the fine fare at the Virginia Cafe

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 5 January 2006 05:16 (twenty years ago)

have you guys ever been to Ground Kontrol?

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 5 January 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

I cannot speak for the truly omniverous, but Nicholas, the Farm, maybe some breakfast at Colleen's -- you guys won't have a car, right? if you did, Ya Halla might be in order -- where else, Lovely Hula Hands, if you're staying downtown then Bijou or possibly Mother's, and oh Pambiche! with a trip to Mio Gelato or Staccato Gelato for dessert -- or perhaps some Ethiopian at Blue Nile or any number of places -- and this is all without getting to some of the more spendy places, because with so many fantastic affordable places, why go spendy? -- and perhaps, just perhaps, a little Chaat House, just a little side dish to tide you over -- and end with coffee just about anywhere. Yum. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few places.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 January 2006 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Also I am not entirely convinced you guys would be into Ground Kontrol (which is a retro video game arcade) but I might be wrong there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 January 2006 07:24 (twenty years ago)

boooo

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 5 January 2006 07:25 (twenty years ago)

Nothing against GK, mind you!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

Nicholas: yes please! FAP: yes please also!

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:30 (twenty years ago)

Have you been to Ya Halla yet? It is like the fancy version of Nicholas, but without being any more expensive. Bonus points for the "international food store" next door. Triple bonus points for having surprisingly amazing desserts.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:40 (twenty years ago)

No car, correct. I like this "Fareless Zone" thing! Seattle has one too, but I don't know if it extends to the train station. Amazing desserts = yes please! Ground Kontrol - hmmmm.

The train will supposedly get us there Friday morning, so either Friday or Saturday should be okay for us. Minor debate raging as to whether or not to reconnect with ex-business partner.

Thanks for the map Teeny! That will make the mister very happy indeed. I'm also thinking about seeing this: http://www.brodytheater.com/

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 5 January 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Crazy. I will be in Portland that weekend, looking for an apartment. Because I am moving there soon. Because I am secretly stalking Douglas.

Actually, Jen will be there as well, helping me with the apartment hunt even though she is not moving. Because she is not secretly stalking anyone.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know how much time I will have away from work, but I will be in Portland Jan. 18 - 21.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 January 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

The Hung Far Low finally closed last year.

http://www.littlemotors.org/antifreeze/archives/images/hungfarlow.jpg

yes, someone actually spraypainted out the "tails" section.

Martin, you're moving down here?

kingfish pibb Xtra (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 7 January 2006 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, what the? When did we become so popular? Maybe squeeze a little time for coffee at least.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 7 January 2006 12:22 (twenty years ago)

So, Saturday then?

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 12 January 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that would be cool, Chris. It looks like I'll be staying at the Marriott on Broadway and working night shifts (7 pm - 7 am).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

What exactly do you do?

This weekend is crazy. Saturday is the performance thing that I have e-mailed some of you about (starts at 1:30pm, lasts until I think 5?) and then I am seeing a play that night. (Which, if you're interested in seeing what I think will be a free showing of a Gertrude Stein play done by a local experimental theatre company, you know, let me know and I can probably get you tickets.) So as far as FAPpage goes, Friday might be way better for me. Or there can be multiple FAPs, who knows? Either way I am determined to meet up with people.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Vigilanteism, mostly.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

(also doing support for software at hospitals)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 01:08 (twenty years ago)

Secret nighttime hospitals?

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

Day 5 - Nighttime

Red Chapel:

Theatre Pub- Listen to Abigail sing a lively Irish tune.

Hospital:

Go through the swing door on the right - don't worry the watchman will not wake up. Turn right, forward and look at table. Take the medical grip. Go down to the basement.

Morgue - Basement - Go to the wall cabinet and use the medical grip on the lock. Take the mortuary and Dr. Tumbletoo keys.

Go to the mortuary door down the hall. Use the mortuary key on door. Oh my heart.... Watch a man in top hat run out.

Go to white door at the other side of the room. Turn left and see a weigh scale. Look at the counterweight of the white door pulley and see it is 55 lbs. SAVE GAME HERE.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Which Gertrude Stein play? This weekend is going to be full to the brim!

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

Dr Faustus Lights the Lights

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

We'd rather see experimental Stein theatre than the improv thing at the Brody, if you can get us tickets. I think we will OMSI on Sunday for the NW Animators thing.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:12 (twenty years ago)

busy weekend. I get to spend most of my time in training classes, but i should be available for a little while on saturday.

kingfish russian bigamist (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 12 January 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Jen and I are getting in Friday evening, probably around 8:30 or so... Dunno if that's a good time for anybody, but we'll probably want to eat something when we roll in. Mebbe even drink something too. ;)

Saturday I'm getting up early so I can call a bunch of places who refused to let me make an appointment ahead of time and see if they still have apartments available. Also I gotta hit all the new listings from Friday evening and Saturday morning on craigsmuthafuckinlist and call those people too.

I'll actually be around Sunday too, as I've got a couple appointments to see apartments Sunday right after lunchtime. If anyone wants to brunch it out or something...

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 13 January 2006 10:41 (twenty years ago)

We're catching the train in an hour, but will check back in once we're in town. Tonight, tomorrow night, Sunday brunch all sound good to me!

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 13 January 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

I have training class til 6pm on saturday & sunday night, but I'd be good for meeting up for a bit.

Somebody drop me an email at j d s a l m o n [at] gmail [dot] com

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 14 January 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Kingfish, check your email. Douglas, I webmailed you too!

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 14 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

What can you tell me about Jake's Famous Crawfish? 'Cause I'll punish some crawfish. It looks like it's right by my hotel.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Don't know about Jake's, but heartily recommend Nicholas, Mother's, and the Bijou Cafe!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

It's a "classy" place that has been around for ages. Seems like it might be a tourist/suburban trap, but I can't say since I don't eat seafood and I don't think any of my friends have ever mentioned eating there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Jake's is owned by McCormick and Schmick now. Here's an undated review - sounds like the seafood is fresh (true of all M&S restaurants), but if so, they won't have crawfish in January.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Okay, thanks. Any recomendations for actual good places to eat in that area?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

xpost:

Jake's was the second restaurant opened my McCormick & Schmick. I've been there a couple of times and it's not bad.

Re Hung Far Low: The location in Chinatown closed but they moved out to 82nd & Division sans sign unfortunately.

The Marriott on Broadway is smack dab in the middle of downtown, so your choices can be limited. However if you drive or utilize the Max or the bus, you'll find you have quite a few options.

Just remember: Portland is essentially split up into quadrants. The Willamette divides the city into east and west Portland. Burnside is the street that determines if the address is north or south. If you go north of Ankeny you'll notice that the streets become alphabetical (Ankeny, Burnside, Couch, etc.) On the eastside though, this goes awry once you hit I-84. I could get into how streets are grouped on the southside by trees, then Civil War figures, but that's getting too complicated. So for example: Nicholas which Casuistry and Ned recommended (and I do as well!) is located at 318 SE Grand Ave. From this you can deduce that the restaurant is three blocks south of Burnside, east of the Willamette river on Grand Avenue. Yes, there is also a North Portland and the St. John's area, but I'm not certain how long you're staying or what your transportation is. This is a fast and dirty way to help you get around Portland so there are quite a few things I've left out.

Some sites to check out for Portland restaurants are:

Good luck and I hope you have a good time!

righteousmaelstrom (righteousmaelstrom), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Thanks!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, we were staying a block from the Marriott and walked to Mother's (409 SW 2nd - about 6 blocks) and the Bijou Cafe (132 SW 3rd - about 8 blocks). We took a cab over to Nicolas, but walked back (over a mile) which, after all the amazing food we ate there, was a good thing. We also ate at Thai Peacock (219 SW 9th) - very tasty. Chris had recommended Half & Half, just a few doors up from Thai Peacock, but we missed our chance to try it this trip. Take a hat, hoodie or umbrella, or be prepared to be drizzled on!

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Cool cool. What kind of food is Mother's?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

"Multiethnic comfort food" We had breakfast there - excellent fritattas, potatoes, brioche french toast breaded with cornflakes (didn't try this, but sounded good). They do lunch and dinner as well and have a full bar. Chris mentioned they are famous for their appetizer plates at dinner, if I'm remembering correctly.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm in.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Also, plenty of great places to eat/drink on the eastside, too

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

They are not famous, but they are beloved.

Didn't I list a ton of restaurants up above? Portland is small but if you don't have a car and you're downtown then you might want to stick to downtown-y things, which is unfortunate since most of the delights are indeed on the other side of the river. Anyway feel free to e-mail me if you want suggestions, etc.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

I'll have a car, but I'm kind of sketched out about driving a rental car around a city I'm not familiar with. Once I get situated I'll shoot you an e-mail though, thanks Chris.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:36 (twenty years ago)

You'll find that Portland is one of the clearest cities to navigate -- we warn you of the next major street about a block beforehand with a big sign. It's really brilliant, and I always am surprised when I visit another city that doesn't do that.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

I like your city, Portlanders. The pine trees are a nice touch. I walked around downtown today and got some awesome iced coffee and a lamb sandwich near the hotel. Mother's looked kind of expensive, but the food carts looked promising. I got a hot tip on a cajun place near 5th & Burnside too.

I don't have to start work until 9 pm tomorrow, so I'd like to do a little exploring.

Jordaaaan, Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I second that, Jordan: Portland is a great town! I thought the food vendors in the parking lots a brilliant idea. Nice parks, lots of public art, all those bridges. Have fun!

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 19 January 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Be sure to travel up & down SE Hawthorne(bet/w SE Grand and 50th)

You have wheels, right? also try SE Belmont, and NE Broadway(tho that neighborhood is a bit more yuppieish)

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 19 January 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, with one major exception. The starlight parade. Been caught twice in it. That parade completely fucks anybody over who's trying to get away from the city at the time.. as there are relatively little ways to enter I-5.. which is a good and bad city-planning decision, depending on your perspective.

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

That said, I agree 100% on the "Big sign before next major street" thing. Aside from the cost of making the signs, you figure..
