They are a pain, my sympathies. Things that I have found can help: (though I am not saying I have scientific evidence etc. etc.)

Kitchen roll soaked in some apple cider vinegar and held on it for a few minutes. This is for the early stages to try and kill it off before it becomes a proper one - using it mid-way would be too painful.

Taking zinc and L-Lysine supplements are supposed to help boost your immune system to help shorten the time it takes to heal. Some people take L-Lysine regularly to help prevent them.

Personally, after reading about it somewhere I have been using red clover tincture (from Neal's Yard) which I'd dab on every few hours if I felt one coming on - which would usually stop it, or prevent it from becoming too evil.

I only have one right now - if I do nothing, will it go away by itself eventually or spread out and infect more of the surrounding area?

I don't know which stage it's in :(

Plain old ice helps too, especially in the early stages. Ice it.

Yes, ice is supposed to be good - forgot that one.

It *can* spread around the area where it is - just be really careful about not touching it and then touching another part of your face/wash your hands etc.

It's herpes simplex type 1 which is very common and not the same as genital herpes...

elisabeth k, Friday, 6 January 2006 13:50 (twenty years ago)

be sure to slobber all over your hands and jerk off furiously

It may well be HSV-2 (aka genital herpes)-- it can cause oral sores, too! And you can also pass HSV-1 to the genitals, so, uh, keep that in mind.

quincie, Friday, 6 January 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I have NO idea how I have never contracted cold sores. No idea at all.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 6 January 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Try Lysine. It's an amino acid that can inhibit and speed the healing of
cold sores (and supposedly genital herpes as well). Take it on an empty stomach for best results. There may even be a topical lysine ointments you could try. Also, plain yogurt can help.

Sure, if you want to be 100% clear on which one it is, go see your GP for a test.

I read that 80% of the population are immune to hsv-1, and that only 20% of people who experience hsv-1 cold sores have a reoccurrence.

Naturally I was overjoyed that I fell into that 20%. Though at least it's only once a year now...

elisabeth k, Friday, 6 January 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I am reasonably confident it isn't genital herpes.

Not touching your face is so much harder when you've been told not to do it, oh god.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 6 January 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

(thanks for the help all!)
