So yes, it's kicked off with a moderately massive upset - The Count eliminated 3-1 by Albertino 'Dartitis' Essers. Draws:

MEN'S FIRST ROUND, 7-8 JAN
Jelle Klaasen (Ned) v Dennis Harbour (Eng)
Mervyn King (Eng) 3-0 Brian Woods (Eng)
Mareno Michels (Ned) v Paul Hogan (Eng)
Ted Hankey (Eng) 1-3 Albertino Essers (Ned)
Shaun Greatbatch (Eng) v Niels de Ruiter (Ned)
Tony Eccles (Eng) 2-3 Per Laursen (Den)
Co Stompe (Ned) v Paul Hanvidge (Sco)
Simon Whitlock (Aus) v Andy Fordham (Eng)
Martin Atkins (Eng) v Gerald Porter (Ire)
Martin Adams (Eng) v Darryl Fitton (Eng)
Ulf Ceder (Fin) v Mike Veitch (Sco)
John Walton (Eng) v Stephen Roberts (Eng)
Ross Montgomery (Sco) v Vincent van der Voort (Ned)
Tony O'Shea (Eng) v Tony West (Eng)
Gary Robson (Eng) v Gary Anderson (Eng)
Raymond van Barneveld (Ned) v Brian Sorensen (Den)

WOMEN'S QUARTER-FINALS, 7-8 JAN
Clare Bywaters (Eng) v Sabine Beutler (Swi)
Trina Gulliver (Eng) v Karen Littler (Eng)
Francisca Hoenselaar (Ned) v Karen Lawman (Eng)
Karin Krappen (Ned) v Jan Robbins (Wal)

Currently at the oche: O'Shea and West, with the Silverback one set up. For some reason, Tony West has dyed his hair orange, and now looks like a fusion of Richey Davies' body and Gareth Gates' haircut.

I'm going to the pub now. Onward!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I watched about fifteen minutes of teh Count vs Essers, then turned over to watch Jeff Stelling and forgot to turn it back.

The Viking's going to win, isn't he?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 7 January 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

The whole bastard thing is being broadcast on the BBC Sport website, which is great for people without tellies and people who want to watch every first round match in full. I fulfil both criteria admirably.

However, it is reminding me of the time I thought I was going to die at the hands drunken woman at a darts tournament in Blackpool. Good times.

My tip: Barney.

caek (caek), Sunday, 8 January 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

First really significant result - Adams disposes of Fitton 3-1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

And now, studio analysis. Ted Hankey is dressed like... I do not understand what Ted Hankey is dressed like. Closest comparison I can come up with is Ming The Merciless.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Really, that jacket is incomprehensible.

Up next, though, possibly the tie of the round (on paper) - Fordham and Whitlock.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Juliette Ferrington explains the Whitlock-Fordham pre-match vignette - "They're in a hairdressers, because they both have long hair."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

And the tone of the commentary:

TONY GREEN: "The colours of the Australians, there. We saw enough of them in the summer. They weren't smiling when they went home, though."

DAVID CROFT: "Perhaps we should cut off the beards and burn them. Then we could play for the Ashes every year!"

They appear to have a new feller calling the scores, too, and he seems hell bent on elongating the penultimate syllable of every score. "SIIIIIIIIIIIX-ty!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Great friends with Ant and Dec, apparently, Fordham.

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Eep. From 2-0 up in the first set, Fordham's suddenly found himself two sets to nowt down. Both look to be struggling for form, but Whitlock's struggling a bit less.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Fordham nearly came back, tore through to a 2-0 lead in the third but couldn't put it away when it counted, and The Silent One wouldn't let him get away with it. Whitlock through. The crowd is silent. Fordham leaves the stage, wiping away tears. Kinda heartbreaking, really.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

And the shocks just keep coming - John Boy Walton the next seed out, straight-setted by qualifier Steve Roberts.

Up next - it's the return of the ma(tchsti)ck! Co Stompe takes on Paul Hanvidge, a match Co ought to win. Then again, the way things have been going today...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 18:53 (twenty years ago)

... ah well. Co was never really at the races - Hanvidge wasn't particularly stunning but didn't make any big mistakes, played a good, efficient game of darts and advances 3-1. No 180s in the entire match, though.

(I am trying to figure out if there are peeps who will be watching the highlights later that this is spoiling anything for...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

(...I suspect not)

Currently, Dennis Harbour's a set-up on the astoundingly young-looking Jelle Klaasen. This has led to the commentary exchange of the tournament thus far.

GREEN: Dennis Harbour... his nickname's 'Pearl'.

CROFT: Because he's a singer?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

The Viking's going to win, isn't he?

Hmmm, William Hill isn't very scared of me this weekend, is he?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, where darts is concerned, I'd suspect Mr Hill'd be feeling kinda chuffed right now...

Here's the 2nd round as it stands:

Jelle Klaasen (Ned) 4-2 Mervyn King (Eng)
Paul Hogan (Eng) 4-2 Albertino Essers (Ned)
Shaun Greatbatch (Eng) 4-2 Per Laursen (Den)
Paul Hanvidge (Sco) 4-2 Simon Whitlock (Aus)
Martin Atkins (Eng) v Martin Adams (Eng)
Mike Veitch (Sco) v Stephen Roberts (Eng)
Vincent van der Voort (Ned) v Tony O'Shea (Eng)
Gary Anderson (Sco) v Raymond van Barneveld (Ned)

There are no seeds left in the top half of the draw. King and Whitlock's exits are rather large shocks. Assuming Barney stays in, you'd have to back him to take it.

Assuming Barney stays in, that is.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Klaasen in the semis! The Stephen Hendry or Ronnie O'Sullivan?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 12 January 2006 23:30 (twenty years ago)

You'd back him for the final. Greatbatch may have been the last man to make a televised nine-darter, and this may be the first time he's got past the first round, but he's not beaten or played anyone quite as good as Young Yeller. He'll most likely get his clock cleaned by Barney or (dear God NO) Adams in the final, though.

So here's hoping for the upsets tomorrow - O'Shea may be the last player in the draw I actively like.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 12 January 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Tasty final set there from Klaasen. I toyed with sticking a bet on him at 66/1 after his 1st round match and bottled it. He's 2/1 now.

Barney was struggling with his doubles in the match I saw. You'd still make him favourite but I'm sure even he's a bit worried about a 21 year old who throws in 3 straight 140s in about 2 seconds looking as if he's couldn't give a shit where they land.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 12 January 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Klaasen is also the first attractive male darts player ever. Including Steve Beaton.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 12 January 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

But he looks like Christiano Ronaldo. Will he step over Greatbatch and be united with the Embassy?

RESIGN NOW GREEN YOU ARE PWNED BY ME

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Dammit Boyler, how did it take you this long to get here?

He has a vague sort of bumfluff-y top lip effect. I personally think he looks more like the Korean feller from The PJ's. This is because I watch too much television.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to miss the quarters, semis and final as I'm Bremen this weekend. Anyway of finding out whether it's on there?

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

It'll be streaming at www.bbc.co.uk/darts - unless you're in a place that gets BBC2 (or whatever Dutch station broadcasts it), I don't really know...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:49 (twenty years ago)

SBS6 and (apparently) Eurosport will be showing it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 January 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Get tae fuck!

(Whats SBS6?)

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 13 January 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

The BDO world championship was once held at Rock City in Nottingham, you know.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Friday, 13 January 2006 08:03 (twenty years ago)

And the women's competition sees the final being contested by Trina Gulliver and Francis Hoenselaar. Again. So that's title #7 for Trina, then.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 13 January 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

So much for the upsets, then. Your semis are Klaasen-Greatbatch and Adams-Barneveld. And Gulliver's the women's champion again. This year's tournament has been a bit of a disappointment, somehow. Still, assuming (assuming) Klaasen-Barney is the final, that should definitely be intriguing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Barney's just gone two sets to one up on Adams. It is being announced by El Announco Horrifico. "WaaAAAAAAN-hunndrerd!" "NIIIIIIIIIIIIInety-one!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

And there's three-one. Barney is finishing like a bastard. Adams is currently nowhere.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

4-1. Barney's taken the past nine legs. Bobby's tactical analysis: "Barney's beating 'im up."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I refer the honorable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago:

"My tip: Barney."

caek (caek), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Celebrities in the crowd: Bert Wheedon, Jess Conrad.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

(Arjen Robben will presumably be along tomorrow)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

There's 5-1. Barney actually had a pretty weak leg in finishing terms, but Adams has never looked even close to troubling him.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Trebles for show. Doubles for dough.

I am also having an excellent fantasy football day. And I still have to read the Kurt Vonnegut memoir extract in the Guardian. It is my thesis that Saturday afternoons in the UK are better than Saturday afternoon's anywhere else on Earth, and doubly so in January during the darts.

Mike W (caek), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

5-2! Barney's turn to go to shit, with the second leg being particularly woeful, but Adams managed to make his doubles this time. Interesting times.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Crowd shot of Dutchwoman dressed as lion.

GREEN: The lion king... without the wardrobe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm watching this match in a TV in the window of a Bang & Olufsen shop over the road because I can't get the bastard internet thing working. Your updates are most welcome.

Mike W (caek), Saturday, 14 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Also, as if I'm not already in a good enough mood, and because I haven't read them for, oh, several months:

http://mrankin.home.cern.ch/mrankin/Waddell.htm

e.g. "The atmosphere is so tense, if Elvis walked in ,with a portion of chips....... you could hear the vinegar sizzle on them"

Mike W (caek), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Adams pushed him all the way, had one shot at 16's to take it to a ninth set, but missed. Barney nailed double 8's, 6-2, just like last year's final, and one half of the all-Dutch final is in place.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I'm going to be torn if klaasen wins this one (and I think he will, easily). I'd love to see barney get his sixth, but I'd love to see the new boy do good too.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Klaasen has just flown out the blocks to take the first set. His three-dart average is currently 106.4. Greatbatch already looks just a bit startled.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Greatbatch levels it at one set apiece. The darts here is much better than the prior match - Klaasen's inconsistent (THE INEXPERIENCE IS SHOWING etc.) but when he's on he's electrifying.

Fan of the tournament so far is a Dutch bloke: "I was on the toilet with Shaun Greatbatch yesterday, he said he was going to slow him down, but the young man is going to win."

Assuming Klaasen does, this will actually be the first all-Dutch final, and I think only the second ever where there's been no home nations involvement (previous being Barney against Tony David, which I think was 2001-ish).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:01 (twenty years ago)

(unless Barney ever played John Part in the final. Which he may have done)

Greatbatch, however, has the upper hand here - 2-0 up in the third, Klaasen's inconsistency is really costing him at the moment.

Celebrities in the crowd: PC Stamp off The Bill.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

And Greatbatch pulls off the 141! He goes two sets to one up, and has the throw in the fourth set. This is going to be very, very close.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I didn't see that coming. This is a GREAT match!

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Also in the crowd - Dad Slater from Eastenders.

ledge (ledge), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

And now it's 3-1 Greatbatch; Klaasen's gonna really have to come up with something special, cos Greatbatch is probably throwing better than either Adams or Barneveld did in the previous match.

Celebrities in the crowd: the England women's cricket team. David Croft attempts to engage John Part in conversation about cricket. David Croft fails.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 14 January 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Barney's doubles let him down again! So Klassen's back in it.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Good grief. 3-2 Klaasen, after Barney misses four straight shots at double 16 - I don't think he's hit a single one this match, and he could barely miss it against Adams...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Now that's more like it - 154 checkout from Barney

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

(check: 156)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Yes, sorry, that's what I meant...

Klaasen bottles it again! Barney is ON FIRE!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Whew. 3-3 at the break... the darts hasn't been stunning, but the drama - fuckin' 'ell...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Get sandwich or watch montage sequence...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

My flatmate just pointed out that I keep cheering for whoever's winning...I think she's got it back to front though, I'm actually leaning towards whoever's behind. I just want them both to win, and for this match to last as long as possible, cos it's GREAT.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Celebrities in the backstage area: Keith Deller.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Keith Deller in a REALLY HORRIBLE JACKET!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

maybe we could spot the celebs on the wall behind Bobby George? Jim Davidson, Martin Jarvis...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Crap montage, vicar.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

What was Co Stompe so angry about in that montage? First time I've ever seen him display any emotion at all, I think...

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

He was angry because he was playing awful against Paul Hanvidge, if I remember. He did have a stinker of a match though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Now it's Barney 4-3, Jelle making a meal of double 16 to let Barney in at tops.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

TONY GREEN: Clean as a whistle - and as fast. It's like the Tour de France!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Cracking set from Klaasen there, pressure not getting to him at all. Tony just said "it's four-four" EXACTLY like Alan Partridge.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

4-4! Klaasen is turning it on again, three straight legs, 180's all over, hammering the doubles... what odds we're going all the way?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Christ, the amount of 180's the boy's hitting, what odds the nine-darter?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Did Tony really just say "sweet as a nutter"?

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Best! Final! Ever!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

and, yes, someone should throw in a 9-darter to confirm it.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

5-4 KLAASEN! Barney makes a pig's ear of double nine, leaving Jelle 104, which he somehow makes, crowd fucking ERUPTS!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

The look on Bristow's face has something of Superintendent Chalmers about it - "Bar-NEY!"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

5-5 - Barney majorly wobbles at 2-1 up, Klaasen snatches that but can't hold on in the decider. Things slowing up a bit. Crowd dying down. Barney back in the ascendancy, Klaasen maybe wore himself down with that 7-leg run of his...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Barney is now talking to himself while he's throwing, and you can tell his breathing's a bit different. I've never seen him look this rattled, even when losing...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Then again, he is up at the moment.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Barney totally rattled now, should have had that there...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

6-5 JELLE!

FUCK! Klaasen from NOWHERE in the deciding leg, Barney misses three at double 9, Klaasen pulls out 104! FUCK! Klaasen one set from the title!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Barney needed that one for his confidence, I think. Crowd going barmy for Klaasen, which can't be helping him.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

And Klaasen one leg away from the title...

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

FUCK! He did it!

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

101 OUTSHOT AND THE BOY'S DONE IT!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I toyed with sticking a bet on him at 66/1 after his 1st round match and bottled it.

Kicking yourself, Gerry?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I am older than the world darts champion. Fucking hell.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I wish Barney had pulled it back to 6-6 just to spin this one out a bit more, though.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

"Ladies and gentlemen, please don't stand on the seats..."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

great darts AND we shld still get von ryan's express

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

And after all that, the poor sod's going back on the ferry.

STUBBSY: "Where's it docking?"

JELLE: "I don't say."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Faaaaaantastic. Apparently Klaasen's going home on the ferry. You can afford a flight now, son!

No interview with Barney though. Poor old thing.

Mike W (caek), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I mean, imagine inviting your hero (Eric) to come and watch you equal his record, then failing to do it. He must feel terrible.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Kicking yourself, Gerry?

Aye :-(

Great final all the same and I made a few quid off correctly predicting both semis and the final.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 15 January 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

(Although there's something to it, not too sure about Barney putting too much pressure on himself cuz he had a great run and maybe that's over - here is hoping he wins it once more.)

Great final ('fraid i've not been too engaged by the rest of the tournament) and really fantastic TV.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Blimey! I'm gutted to have missed this. I found a bar in Bremen which would show it, but people wanted to watch Chelsea instead. Bah.

Anyway - Phil Taylor last year said Darts was a young man's game'. I ridiculed him, but he was right after all...

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 16 January 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

The Chelsea game had finished before this even started, Dave. You were robbed.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

By robbed, I mean conned, obviously. Or something.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
Barney the scabKlaasen scared him off

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

This may have fucked the BDO a little - I'd still think Barney's the top draw in Dutch darts, meaning that the PDC now have a major chance of making inroads into the Dutch market. I wouldn't be amazed if further defections were to follow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
I only just found out about this! I'm pretty disappointed in Barney, it's a bit of a sore loser thing to do. And he doesn't realistically stand much of a chance against Taylor, it's not like he's going to imrpove his standing by moving. So it can only be down to the money really, can't it? Which he shouldn't need, really.

Bah.
