Just to clarify: the first one was spoken by Cary Grant, the second by James Cagney.

Walter Burns: I still wish you hadn't done that, Hildy.
Hildy Johnson: Done what?
Walter Burns: Divorced me. It makes a man feel he's not wanted.
Hildy Johnson: Oh, now look, junior... that's what divorces are FOR!

From It Happened One Night

Alexander Andrews: Oh, er, do you mind if I ask you a question, frankly? Do you love my daughter?

Peter Warne: Any guy that'd fall in love with your daughter ought to have his head examined.

Alexander Andrews: Now that's an evasion!

Peter Warne: She picked herself a perfect running mate - King Westley - the pill of the century! What she needs is a guy that'd take a sock at her once a day, whether it's coming to her or not. If you had half the brains you're supposed to have, you'd done it yourself, long ago.

Alexander Andrews: Do you love her?

Peter Warne: A normal human being couldn't live under the same roof with her without going nutty! She's my idea of nothing!

Alexander Andrews: I asked you a simple question! Do you love her?

Peter Warne: YES! But don't hold that against me, I'm a little screwy myself!

Molly: Is that your name?
Godfrey: No, my name is Godfrey.
Molly: All right, be frank.

[at the city dump]
Irene: Could you tell me why you live in a place like this when there's so many other nice places?
Godfrey: You really want to know?
Irene: Oh, I'm very curious.
Godfrey: It's because my real estate agent felt that the altitude would be very good for my asthma.

Ninotchka: Why do you want to carry my bags?
Porter: That is my business.
Ninotchka: That's no business. That's social injustice.
Porter: That depends on the tip.

Lily Vautier: Darling, remember, you are Gaston Monescu. You are a crook. I want you as a crook. I love you as a crook. I worship you as a crook. Steal, swindle, rob. Oh, but don't become one of those useless, good-for-nothing gigolos.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 8 January 2006 07:21 (twenty years ago)

Gaston Monescu: Madame Colet, if I were your father, which fortunately I am not, and you made any attempt to handle your own business affairs, I would give you a good spanking--in a business way, of course.
Mariette Colet: What would you do if you were my secretary?
Gaston Monescu: The same thing.
Mariette Colet: You're hired.

ten months pass...

so much snappy dialogue in My Man Godfrey it almost seems pointless isolating and quoting any - it's all good!

The guy who runs film blog Shadowplay has been doing a cinema club and has been diving deep into the career of My Man Godfrey's director, Gregory La Cava. So far we've watched: 5th Avenue Girl (kind of a gender swapped My Man Godfrey - old millionaire guy picks up vagrant Ginger Rogers to trick his family into thinking he's gone full hedonist; Rogers underplays the part, which is a v smart decision, and there's also a bolchevist chauffeur that would be good value on the UK pol thread); Primrose Path (Rogers and Joel McCrea, highly OTT melodrama with anti-Portuguese racism); Bed Of Roses (pre coder with Constance Benett as a con artist/sex worker, laid on a bit thick for me but good value if you're into that era) and Unfinished Business (40's weepie with Irene Dunne with the melodrama skillfully mixed with comedy and visual style; at times it feels directed by Tashlin!).

I couldn't find 5th Avenue Girl but managed to find a vhs rip of Private Lives which most certainly wasn't a 30s screwball comedy!
