C or D: Fearne Cotton

I'm surprised not to be able to find a thread dedicated to Fearne Cotton. So here is one.

The best crossover kids/teens/dads/pop/rock presenter since...well, since telly was invented? Y'damn right! Just the right mix of (what certainly seems like) genuine enthusiasm and thinly-veiled pisstaking, with a healthy slug of k-rowr chucked in. Cat Deeley? Don't make me laugh.

(I'd post some video evidence if I could only find some online...)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I like her with the red hair.

I remember way back when she won the competition to present the Disney club with little Des! That was the mid 90's I think.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

she's only 23...

(who's little Des?)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, seems it must have been around 1999 then. I think last year is like a decade ago. Des was her co-presenter, he was short iirc.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

i give up. it wasn't that funny anyway.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Plenty of k-rowr evidence about, all of it non-pastable. I also found an image (non-pastable, worse luck) of her holding kittens! What's a guy supposed to do?

Apart from looking at her, however, she's definitely not anything special . . . but that's just my dislike of "thinly-veiled pisstaking" - you either display enthusiasm about something, or you lay into it. You can't have it both ways - I'm looking at you Lauren Laverne, and you Simon Popworld.

DOn't get me wrong, I like pretty people, but world-weary cynicism is not welcome in the pop world, and I'm not just talking music.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Although I may be wrong about all of this, I haven't had my cup of tea yet today.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

i don't think she's a world-weary cynic though - i think she's just got a fairly well-defined idea of what she likes and dislikes, and acts accordingly. which is more unusual for a pop presenter than it is for, say, someone on top gear.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

simon popworld MAKES my sat morn lie-in. there's an actual laugh out loud moment for me at least once per show. i am a world weary cynic though - pyjamas for llamas, ribbons for gibbons - this is about my sad arse level.

miquita's mum andrea was also once very nice about my band so there's a loyalty thing there.

john clarkson, Sunday, 8 January 2006 13:53 (twenty years ago)

miquita's mum is ANDREA OLIVER???

which is more unusual for a pop presenter than it is for, say, someone on top gear.

Maybe you've just picked a bad example, but an episode of Top Gear will have people being enthusiastic about some cars, and really laying into others. More importantly, if Clarkson doesn't like something, he'll slag it off one week, then meet the designer the week after, and still say it's rubbish, to his face. Pop presenters (Simon Popworld is the worst for this, but they're all at it) have cheapo shots at people when they're not in the room, and then are all nicey-nicey-ooh-what-great-hair-you've-got when they do the interview later. I can understand WHY this happens (TV boss and record company man do not want to piss each other off) but that doesn't mean that I have to like it, nor does it excuse it.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

miquita's mum is ANDREA OLIVER???

are you being sarccy? yeah she is - i thought that was quite common knowledge

john clarkson, Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

johnny, you misunderstand me - read that sentence you quoted again...

(ie. we're in agreement!)

xpost - oh...i honestly had no idea.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

soz dood - no fite w/ you :)

john clarkson, Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeh, ur right, sorry charlie.

I've had my tea now, this mistake won't happen again.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

fearne is also probably the only person i can think of who's regularly on telly, whose *actual genuine opinion* about a band i might actually consider trusting! not that we have similar taste (i don't think), but she seems to make sense.

or perhaps i just fancy her...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't think she thinks either

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 8 January 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

You just fancy her.

(xpost dammit)

Amstell isn't really like this though, is he? If you see his interviews with, I dunno, Rooster or someone, it's quite obvious he thinks very little of them, but he puts it more interestingly than "You suck. Why?". His interview with Lloyd Banks was a masterclass in this.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 8 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

miquita's mum is ANDREA OLIVER???

Andrea Oliver must have been really young when she had her.

Miquita is also Neneh Cherry's niece.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Fearne Cotton would be by her own presenting method either 'amazing' or 'a legend', even if she thought she was a bit shit really.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Sunday, 8 January 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Cotton bad, Amstell good, Miquita fit.

chap who would dare to work for the man (chap), Sunday, 8 January 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Who *is* Andrea Oliver?

BBC Radio London presenter and co-host of 'Badass TV' alongside Ice T. Also did stuff with Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 8 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

she likes any old shit

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

She's a phoney and she's no Lauren Laverne.

Mestema (davidcorp), Monday, 9 January 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

not even particularly rowr.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 9 January 2006 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh you haterz are all wrong. She makes me doubt my heterosexuality, I love her so much.

She manages to be genuinely enthusiastic about things, and at the same time wink wink nudge nudge about things without ever being overtly nasty.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I think she is beautiful but not that bright or gifted.
