search: you can't do that on television, pete and pete, salute your shorts, welcome freshmen, hey dude, ren and stimpy (early stuff only), fifteen (it's a soap opera for kids too young to watch soap operas! who on earth dreamed this up?), mr wizard, and all those weird nick-exclusive cartoons that used to play in the middle of the night. i remember staying up real late one thanksgiving night in like 1989 and watching those.

destroy: RUGRATS, most of those boring game shows, almost all the daytime "nick junior" cartoons, later ren and stimpy, the fact that looney tunes invariably included a dismal BOSKO cartoon, and obviously everything after 1992 or so.

Was Pinwheel the show that used to show all those weird foreign cartoons? I loved those.

Out of Control was awesome and canadian and there was a cool talk show called Dont Just Sit There with a band of 15 yr olds and sounded like The Church and always wore The Church shirts

Great afternoon cartoons circa 86-87 or so. Dangermouse, Mysterious Lost Cities of Gold.

Fifteen was kind of silly, but i was sort of into it. young ryan reynolds as billy, the kid brother. that matt just wouldn't quit his drinking, no matter how much ashley whispered at him. and there was that awful brooke. so mean. but it was obviously a defense mechanism; she was reaching out.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

oh, and Action League Now! made me laugh.

Action league Now!

Starring: the Flesh. He's super strong and super naked.

Stinky Diver: A former Navy commando with an attitude as bad as his odour.

these shows are realllllly trippy to watch late at night for several hours in a row.

the most insane Nickeldodeon game show was "Finders Keepers", whose sole point was apparently to fuck with children's heads. the host is some 80's standup reject who always seems just on the verge of taking out a gun and splattering his brains across the set.

You can't do that on television, Nick Rocks(helped bring back the Monkees), Lights! Camera! Action!, Ren & Stimpy(1st two years), Dangermouse, Count Duckula, Turkey TV, Kids Wrights, Today's Special, Out of Control(w/ cameos from pre-MST3k Joel Hodgson)

They'd also show The Tomorrow People, and weird little horror movies for kids that would freak me out(the one about the voodoo doll monster thing, etc)

The channel went to shit when they moved down to Universal Studios.

I was always curious about the tomorrow ppl but never cld watch enough episodes to understand wtf was going on. It was totally the kiddie x-files, plus they all had funny accents coz it was a british show or something, innit?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Kiddies X-Files, basically. I remember being devastated when they aired the last episode of it and nothing had resolved, and next week they went back to reruns. I thought they were just missing an episode or something. This was the first in a recurring theme of heartbreak in my TV life. (They're gonna conclude Lost eventually, right?)

my favorite nickelodeon character ATM: boog, from fanboy & chum chum:

http://www.poptower.com/pic-14585/boog-fanboy-chum.jpg

Boogregard "Boog" Shlizetti [2] is a bully who is obsessed with the video game Chimp Chomp, which he plays at the Frosty Mart, often instead of working. He mentioned twice that he grew up in a plastic bubble (an homage to John Travolta, who starred in 'The Boy in the Plastic Bubble'). Boog even talks like Travolta's character, Vinnie Barbarino, in Welcome Back, Kotter. He has a car named Sandy that got destroyed in "Refill Madness". He very much enjoys the "Chimp Chomp" video game (spending most of his time playing it rather than working) and threatening the boys into giving him their quarters. He is the main antagonist of the show.

i love the barbarino homage.

What? Those early Rugrats seasons were hilarious! The episode when the creator of the Dummi Bears show comes to the neighbors' house for dinner still makes me lol.

― Cunga, Sunday, July 4, 2010 6:53 PM (Yesterday

Makes sense. I mean the kids are cute and all but the portrayal of the adults just seems to nail early-90s upwardly middle-class parents (most of the smartest bits revolve around Angelica's yuppie executive mother and Tommy's mother who seems to buy into every child advice book she comes across). All that was lost in the later seasons where every episode just revolved around the kids mispronouncing a word, and the stupid brother.

A buddy of mine d/led some old Nicktoons episodes. I can't believe how crude the animation/drawing is on shows like Doug or Rugrats. I always liked Doug. It's pretty awesome to hear how the same voice actor does almost the same voice for Fry on Futurama. Who knew.

One of the greats was Rocko's Modern Life, which I think straddled the same line Ren & Stimpy did but without making things too obvious. It was actually a pretty cruel show and a lot of it is still funny today. The scene where Rocko is working a sex line and gets called by Mrs. Bighead is awesome; I cannot believe that was in a kid's show, along with numerous references to "jacking". I believe that the "Wacky Delly" episode was at least partially responsible for Aqua Teen Hunger Force and most of Adult Swim's programming.
