the super-d(octor-)who-per weekend of super soup supping &etc: hackney division

ok! before the new season starts, we need a refresh of the last one. and it is cold and soup is good.

the plan: to watch the whole of the ecclestone series of dr who (and possibly the christmas special?) in a weekend/day, and eat a shitload of soup which keeps us warm in the london winter. and, inevitably, drink some bouze.

the cast: everyone welcome but you won't get through the door unless you bring SOUP - the best soup you make. (if it's got meat or fish or gelatin or lard or beef stock or whatever in you must also bring a version without said animal product so everyone can have some.) the definition of soup can be expanded to include STEW.

the location: my house, dalston, hackney, london.

the date: is what is to be discussed here. and do we try and do it in one day, or spread it over a weekend? friday night to saturday night with a sleep-break? saturday morning to the wee hours of sunday morning nonstop? saturday morning to sunday evening with a sleep-break?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

when does the new series start anyway?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Eh, what?

But I am rubbish at making soup unless it is Thing Soup!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

then make THING SOUP! i made tomato soup for the first time evah after christmas with all those tomatoes. i used delia's recipe and it was nummy except she made me put a potato in it which made the texture a bit too squishy; next time i will swap it with an onion.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Thing Soup does not travel well - it needs to be made fresh. And where in Hackney will I get fresh Pak Choi?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

And oh my god, how on earth am I going to follow Dr. Who now I've not got a telly?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

you might be able to get a telly off freecycle! or gumtree! for free or very cheap. i think you can probably get pak choi on ridley road. i'm sure i've seen it there. you can cook yr soup up in our kitchen (as can anyone else, you can watch from the kitchen as we are projecting it on the wall of the living room!).

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:04 (twenty years ago)

can i make (worcester sauce-free) bloody marys instead?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

no, SOUP! you can make them as well if you like. also if you get supermarket worcester sauce it often doesn't have anchovies in.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Bloody marys is stretching the definition of soup a little, I think.

I reckon an all-weekender - well, Fri+Sat at least. Too much concentrated Doctor will stop being fun after not too many hours; this knowledge come from my experience of Star Wars marathons. Maybe a couple of episodes on Friday night and a few more Saturday? That is a big chunk of time, but as I say, best to take our time and savor these things.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

yebbut star wars is COMPLETELY BORING therefore would stop being fun as soon as it started and doctor who is COMPLETELY BRILLIANT therefore this would not happen. but yes, we do need breaks in between to discuss, analyse, eat and FITE. i'm easy, either way.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

if this was lost i would be totally up for it! especially as i have not seen any episodes past episode 5.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

for lost you would need more like a week than a weekend, no? i dunno, saw one or two episodes but i don't have the level of commitment needed to watch lost properly.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

anyway come anyway and get indoctrinated into teh who!

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

That's v. true - we def. need AT LEAST half an hour after each episode to discuss what we all thought of it in a Newsnight Arts Review stylee. And to get more boozage. xpost

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I cannot be bothered with Lost. However, the Who needs to be done. I like the idea of Newsnight style debate after each episode. But who gets to be Tom Paulin?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

(Or perhaps we can get Katie G to stand in!)

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Bloody marys is stretching the definition of soup a little, I think.

SKREW THA HATAZ I saw Bloody Mary Soup for sale in Sainsbury's YESTERDAY! With vodka in it and everything.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

i've never seen any episode of dr who! i don't even know what it's about.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

If we can just bring purchased soup, then I'm bringing Parsnip Soup from Sainsburys! Though soup with BOOZE in it... what a thought! I shall empty the rest of my sherry into the next batch. Heaven!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

all home-made soup is improved by the addition of wine - FACT.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I think almost anything is improved by the addition of sherry, but that's just me.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

come and see it all at once then! it's got space aliens and christoper eccleston and billie and lots of brilliantly shit jokes.

xpost no you have to MAKE soup! this is a weekend of showing off our mad kitchen skillZor and looking after each other at the same time.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I can be the token "popular entertainer who's not a critic and is generally out of their depth" critic.

Charlie, Bloody Mary Soup is soup, but a Bloody Mary is definitely not, whatever way you spin it.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

put white wine in anything and it gets better. and i am not usually a fan of white wine.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Dry sherry PWNS white wine.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

I haven't tried putting wine in my soup before, I'll give that a go. I once made Frecnh onion soup and I didn't have any brandy so I put in Stella instead - it worked a treat.

Port pwns sherry & white wine

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I loathe port. (And I don't even have gout!)

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

anyway look the point is WHEN can we do it? not this coming weekend as there is russian stuff happening in trafalgar square on saturday. the one after might be ok. not last weekend of jan or first weekend of feb.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Well, you've answered your own question, then!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

no i haven't! i'm asking you lot a question. i'm not doing it BY MYSELF, i want to make sure other people can come too. can you do that weekend? can any of the other people here who are up for it? if not, when is the first one you CAN do? i know it's monday but seriously...

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I have no life (well, apart from my band, but it's not like you've booked us any gigs lately, have you, and if you had, you would known mine own schedule better than I would!) so I can do whenever!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

dude, there are like at least ten or fifteen people waiting on a demo.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

We're going to listen to our demo on Thursday and try to sort it out.

I TRIED to have a go at remixing it over the holidays, but all the files are in the wrong format and I can't read any of them. :-(

I'm sick of waiting for producers. I just want to go back to doing it all myself at this point.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

aces. but also oh bugger :(

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy with the weekend of the 20th. Is that bad for anyone?

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

This sounds interesting, but "if you can't cook soup, fuck off!" rules me pretty definitely out. Aren't you overestimating the amount of Season 27? It's only 13 45-minute shows. Even if you spend a quarter of your time on other stuff, that's only noon till 1AM.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

you maybe underestimate how much we FITE :) i dunno, it's always better to allow more time than less... i like the idea of starting around 8 on friday night and doing 3 or 4, then starting the rest after breakfast (ie around noon) on saturday. and dude, ANYONE can make soup.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

I think if everyone is forced to make soup, we may have a soup surfeit!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I dunno - hungry people can eat an awful lot of soup. It's the bread to go with it that'll fill people up tho. Can anyone make bread? I would try, but I'm scared.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

i think this is all part of emsk's dastardly plan to FILL her FREEZER with FREE SOUP.

furthermore, i find her HOME-MADE AND VEGAN SOUP ONLY fascism both unnecessary and a bit snobbish. If I were teetotal and throwing a bring-a-bottle house party, I would never insist that my invited guests brought both booze and non-booze with them!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

No one ever said it had to be vegan. It would be hard to make Thing without eggs!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

That's a little strong, charlie! DO you not make soup? And I don't think there was any vegan talk - I'll have to make some big changes to my Leek + Potato soup otherwise, since everything's cooked in butter! xpost

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

apologies for veggie/vegan confusion. i stand by the rest of my rant though!

(i have never made soup in my life, which is not to say i never will.)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Soup is both easy to make and very tasty. Take your pick from this little lot:

http://www.deliaonline.com/search/?qx=soup

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, Bloody Mary Soup is soup, but a Bloody Mary is definitely not, whatever way you spin it.

So, the addition of the word "soup" is the only thing differentiating bloody mary soup from a bloody mary?

we'll see about that! i bought some aforementioned BMS from sainsbury's this afternoon, and I intend to have it for my dinner.

The label says it is delicious hot or cold, which confuses the above issue further!

Bet I can't taste the voddy though.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i was right. but i still think it's the nicest supermarket soup i've bought in a long time...

[hatches plot to make more zizzed-up version for emsk's bash]

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, I still don't believe that a bloody mary is a soup, but you may bring the soup, if you make it usinbg THIS recipe:

http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/bloody-mary-soup,1015,RC.html

And cos its delia you KNOW it's gonna be divine.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

What if you're just not a big fan of soup?

I mean, I've been eating a lot of it lately because it's convenient to take to work. But it's not my meal of choice.

But then again, I'm in such a rubbish mood today I'll probably change my mind by the time this happens.

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Monday, 9 January 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, I still don't believe that a bloody mary is a soup

If both Sainsbury's and Delia say it's a soup, then goddammit it's a motherfucking soup! *cough* Since I go to those two sources for all my facts.

The one I bought had a poxy 2% vodka. The one I may make will be about 10x that amount.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I refer the honorable gentleman to the reply I gave some moments ago - a bloody mary is not soup, but Bloody Mary Soup is. A sausage is not a kind of stew, but a sausage stew is.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I think you two should duel over this. Pistols at dawn!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

while the rest of us look on while EATING DELICIOUS SOUP. that would be ace, it would be like the FITE scene in b jones.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

While wearing full Regency dress, of course.

But who would be Darcy and who would be Wickham?

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

mebbe they can scrap over that too first!

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I just had an argument with my boss this morning, where I was claiming that the world has no need for any soup other than tomato. He was eating some weird butternut squash and ginger nonsense at the time. (Also we can do without any drink flavours except orange. And any drink temperatures except cold, since hot orange ain't great.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Well, I think Chuck would definitely be the villain, so he can be Wickham. Johnney B is far too upstanding, so he can be Darcy. (And then jump in a very non-dry lake so that we can all watch this over and over in slo-mo, Bridget Jones stylee.)

Oh dear lord, we're pimping our friends again. We must stop this!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

but martin sometimes in darkest winter you need soup that can stand up on its own; soup that you can pile on a bit of bread and it stays there!

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, and charlie no one said it has to be vegan! just that if it has meat etc in it you have to bring a clean version, as well as the defiled one.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Soup is one of mankind's greatest achievements

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

This is about five feet from Kate's "I want to become a bowyer", and other fancies that fly in the face of six thousand years of civilization which have brought us to the point where I can go down the shops and get a cupasoup.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I want to become a *what*?

A Fl3tch3r != a bowyer, thank you kindly!

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

yebbut andrew, cupasoup (grebt as it is) is not made from actual food and will do you no physical good in the january cold.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

also who said we will all be too full to eat soup all weekend? this is another BRILLIANT thing about soup, that you eat loads of it and feel full so you stop but then 2 hours later you're hungry again and want more. num num soup! i may attempt the breadmaking thing too... i have applied for 2 shit-hot sounding jobs today but doubt i will get anywhere near either of them so i will prob have plenty of time on my hands.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

My mum's homemade pea soup = like kissing God

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

This is a BAD thing about soup.

Anyway, about this duelling, eh...

Ah! The Feinbos! (kate), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I would come to this but sadly I've got plans. Plus I have just watched the entire series again (not in one go though). Best line in the series = "Rose, I'm trying to resonate concrete".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:33 (twenty years ago)

who's in? me, kate, johnny, charlie, h, mark s said probably and l, d and b said maybe. andrew if he's realised EVERYONE CAN MAKE SOUP.

and when should we start? friday around 8?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm so looking forward to this!

Disciplining And Controlling My Mind (kate), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Around 8? I hope i get there on time. really should buy a phone . . .

I'm gonna take your lead and try and make 2 kinds of soup - leek+potato and a french onion soup. Or I might try for carot and artichoke soup I saw on teh delia wbesite a while back and printed out. Soooo many nice soups . . .

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

well, i can ask people to get there as close to 8 as poss/after work on friday or something, and we can start when everyone's there.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:26 (twenty years ago)

If there's going to be this much soup, maybe I don't have to make any myself?

(I curried a Neep at the weekend, and was not displeased with the results, though. I did not, however, know that a Neep/Swede was the same thing as a Rutabaga!)

Disciplining And Controlling My Mind (kate), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm only bringing a LITTLE of each soup - and at the end, if there's loads left over, we can make a SOUP SOUP!

And curried swede is very tasty. Swede is my favourite veg without doubt, and in a curry it's beautiful.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I have stared their very own thread:

Neeps vs. Tatties - Let's Talk About Root Vegetables

Disciplining And Controlling My Mind (kate), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

there looks likely to be anything between 5 and 10 people, plus assorted housemates will prob drop in and out (and are exempt from the soup-making rule, as we are taking over their living room for the weekend). and yeah, enough of each soup for everyone to have a bowl of it sounds good... i wonder if anyone wants to make PUDDING SOUP? make a chocolate cake and puree it, or something.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

I might have to get my mom's French onion soup recipe for this.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

woo TWO french onion soups! um it normally has BIFSTOCK in it though so um please be nice.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

STARTED their own thread. What is with my typoons today?

Clearly I need to eat my Neep Curry now.

Disciplining And Controlling My Mind (kate), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Kate, the neep/curry combo would make me fart so much that global warming prevention measures would be all in vain.

My mom's recipe is just onions and butter and a bit of wine/can of beer once those onions have been deeply caramelized, but really it's just a carrier for CROUTONS and CHEESE (gruyere, swiss, or even shredded supermarket mozzarella) melted together on top, under a grill. The real killer Mom recipe is for 'popovers' which are reminiscent of Yorkshire puddings but look more like little chef hats and seem that bit eggier. When I phone to ask for the other I will get the popover recipe because it's less an arsepain than the baking-bread thingy.

Best carnivore soup is cream of wild rice with chicken and ham, and I can make that another time. If I must eat beast it's not like Emsk's place isn't near decent kebab places.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, my neep curry also has KALE in it. Which I was forbidden to eat for years because Joe said it made me fart. But now I can eat what I like, ha ha, pity my poor colleagues.

Disciplining And Controlling My Mind (kate), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

if anyone wants to use the kitchen to cook in, what with soup transportation possibly being complicated, you're more than welcome. we've got er a 5-ring gas hob, electric oven that can be fan-assisted or not, grill, one big proper metal oven tray, 2 or 3 smaller ones, a couple of ceramic/glass ones, 2 blenders (erm, both of which leak), one hand-held blendy thing, a big fuckoff casserole thing and the usual assortment of pans.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 16 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

this is tonight people! anyone who hasn't already said they're coming pls e me on this addy with the . replaced with a _ and i'll send you directions.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Like I said on the other thread, I'm not sure if I'm going to be coming tonight. I'm feeling really rubbish and may just go home and sleep. Will definitely come by tomorrow, though. I'll text you when I leave work and let you know.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

oh boo kate! we can fill you with healthgiving SOUP! but yeh i know :( sometimes when you feel like that you just want your own bed and sleeeeep.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 12:08 (twenty years ago)

It's all I can do to get to any social events in my condition, so ones where there are extra requirements that are beyond my skills are quite out of the question. Have fun!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Argh argh argh, I know that soup is healthgiving but I think mine own bed is even more healthgiving right now. I will definitely come tomorrow. But we shall see. Coffee isn't really reviving me right now.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)
