Not that it really matters, since they've gone bust.

Still, now thousands of youngsters will not know that cheese&onion is GREEN, not blue.

stet (stet), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

ah there's still McCoys and supermarket-own for that though.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

wotsits quavers and skips are all classic

Masked Gazza, Monday, 9 January 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

:( :( aren't POT NOODLES also made by golden wonders?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

wotsits quavers and skips are all walkers?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

OH GOD POT NOODLES *ARE* GOLDEN WONDER! OH NOES I SHALL NOW DIE OF NO FOOD

stet (stet), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

[takes off jacket; cancels panic buying]

stet (stet), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

You're absolutely right RJG. Wotsits used to be gw.
oh well. dud then.

Masked Gazza, Monday, 9 January 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

what kind of bizarro world am i in where Pot Noodle is actually a treasured product?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Quick! Investment buying spree, BritLXers!

Golden Wonder products will be worth £££££ on eBay in a couple of years! Out of print! Sealed! L@@k now! (etc)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

without wheat crunchies and nik-naks i would be dead (and/or admittedly a fair bit thinner). boo.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

golden wonder's "quite hot crisps" were their best.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

No great loss. I always found them too greasy and with unappetising black or green bits in them.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Gaz Lineker has a lot to answer for. No more Mr Nice Guy indeed.

Zoe Espera (Espera), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

those bits are the signs of REAL FOOD rumpie. for real people. for people who are for real.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

[mutters quietly] stir twice and add soy sauce to taste.

stet (stet), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

anything is preferable to walkers crisps

RJG (RJG), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Genocide?

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Golden Wonders are shite. Walkers are the only acceptable crisp ordinaire.

Excelsior Syndrum (noodle vague), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:03 (twenty years ago)

you are wrong, again

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I object strongly Ken, it upsets me when my crisp has more eyes than I do.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

What possible fault could you find in Walkers? Golden Wonder are ugly misshapen grease blob reject crisps in comparison.

Excelsior Syndrum (noodle vague), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Golden Wonder's Cheese & Onion are easily the best on the market.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:16 (twenty years ago)

aw....i loved sausage & tomato flavour best but havent seen it for years

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:24 (twenty years ago)

According to Xfm this morning, Nik-Naks and Wheat Crunchies are safe, since they'll probably be sold to KP or someone; Pot Noodle, if anyone gives a shit, were flogged off to Unilever years back. Ringos are fucked cos nobody's really bought them since the relaunch.

England's funny. I mean, crisps.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:26 (twenty years ago)

The Quite Hot crisps were great, especially mustard flavour. I miss them.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

The pickled onion Ringos are fantastic, and only 20p :~(

Wheat Crunchies and Nik Naks however are strange breeds. I won't miss them.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:01 (twenty years ago)

you won't, since they'll probably be sold to KP or someone

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Walkers are shit, really. Nothing will ever top Brannigans Ham & Pickle.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

No love for Bobby's?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Stevem OTfuckingM.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:47 (twenty years ago)

I've never got over the disappearance of Tudor crisps

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Are these really the only crisps Golden Wonder produced? Not a great variety then.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 10:58 (twenty years ago)

Mind you half the hate for Walkers comes from opening their big shiny bags and finding only about fifteen crisps in there. The space between the top of the bag and the level the crisps stop at is galling. No wonder they've done so well.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

how the fuck did golden wonder go bust?

snowkitten (g-kit), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Because their crisps are shit.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

walkers stood all over them with very big feet, that's how.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:04 (twenty years ago)

I blame Thatcher

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

"Golden Wonder produced the very first flavoured crisp - Cheese and Onion in 1962"

That must have been like man walking on the moon. Can you imagine how exciting that would have been? Wow. You just don't get breakthroughs like that anymore.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Tudor Crisps!

You could only get them up north, but they were made in Reading! What's that all about then?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm always shocked how far behind the US is in terms of crisp flavours. It can be tricky to get anything other than ready salted in many major cities.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Nothing will ever top Brannigans Ham & Pickle

I can't stand eating them ever since they went from the olde paper looking bags to some shiny new-age shit packaging. This may have been golden wonder's downfall also.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

wtf are ringos?

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:23 (twenty years ago)

xpost:

1962:

Scientist 1: Hmm, Cheese. It's good. It works, but it needs something else...
Scientist 2: Onion? Broccoli? Liver?

(later)

Both Scientists smile at each other. Cheese and onion are one, in front.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

they used to be in the chavvy plastic bags with a see-through bit before they shinnyised

xxpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, do you remember those packets that you could shrink into tiny version of the same thing, and make into badges/neck ornaments/earrings?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Nothing will ever top Brannigans Ham & Pickle

There speaks a man who never had the pleasure of eating Tudor's Gammon Crisps

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Aaargh x-post!

Did anyone else put the (empty) old style crips bags under the grill to make tiddly ickle keyring sized duplicates?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd kept some of mine, I had a lovely little Beef Monster Munch one back when they were tasty.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

[lost in reverie about cheese and liver crisps]

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

i remember Ringos but was not a fan.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

You still get Ringos tho surely?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

"No ring goes like a Ringo goes". Genius.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

these were the things the fat or hyperactive kids ate at school, because they were phenomenally cheap and therefore gave you much more E231 (or whatever) for your money.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

and the hole in the middle helps the E231 get through quicker.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:41 (twenty years ago)

What are E numbers called in America? (Apart from lunch I mean)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

E naamberrrs

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

You know how E stands for European? What do they have, Y numbers?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Knowing the yanks, they'll call them W (for World) numbers.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

F numbers - Freedom numbers

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:50 (twenty years ago)

In South Central you're either a Blood or a Crisp.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

F-16 is more likely to turn you into a crisp than being on a crisp itself.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Are resentful Merkins described as having "a crisp on their shoulder" or being "crispy"?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

E = Enhancer, no?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Silly me, they have a fry on their shoulder

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:56 (twenty years ago)

but they go to chinese restaurants and ask for "chippy duck"

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:58 (twenty years ago)

"Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about, deep and chip and even."

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Scampi and Lemon Nik-Naks... a good thing, I think?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

all niknaks are awesome

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

how the fuck did golden wonder go bust?

"Golden Wonder produced the very first flavoured crisp - Cheese and Onion in 1962"

This is an egregious lie. Tayto produced the first cheese and onion flavoured crisp in the 1950s.
