I think that making out and snogging are akin, as both of them are something more than just plain kissing (French Kissing?) but stop short of actual (or oral) sex.

I mean... just say it. SNOGGING. It sounds dirty and drunken, just the way I like it.

I love the term 'making out', probably because I'm never done it. I mean, in the past I've 'got off with' a guy (which, for those of you playing anywhere other than the UK, means just hooking up with) but I've never 'made out' because I've never shagged an American. I have kissed one, but that was as far as it went.

In Helsinki slang the word for heavy kissing is a derivative of the word "licking", which I guess is more descriptive than "kissing", which could mean anything, from the subtle touch of the Pope's lips when he kisses the ground after arriving to an airport, all the way to a full-on freestyle tongue wrestling.

I'm partial to "making out". It's flexible, see -- can stretch to anything from necking in public to actually referring to your sex life in polite conversation (or when more descriptive terms might be overheard by, say, your boss).

"Smooching" reminds me of those horrid pastel children-w/-roses posters from a while back. Or Dutch Girl Kissing Boy lawn ornaments.

"Snogging" is, first of all, British, and second, sounds too much like there are lots of noses involved. Maybe it's the relation to snuffle or sniffle or snort or something -- it just doesn't flip me over. Come to think of it, "snogging" makes me envision Eskimo kisses/nose rubbing or something.

Going back to the activity rather than just the word - it's weird, I remember that I used to have three hour snogging sessions and wouldn't get bored or want more or anything. Post discovering sex, you kind of lose that lovely excitement that just a ~~snog~~ pash could give.
