I can't help but be curious. Who is Gumbel? What was the report like? Is it worth me trying to find a torrent of it?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Gumbel is like Malcolm X when compared to Wayne Brady apparently.

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Who is Wayne Brady?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

He makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.

Jimmy Mod (I myself am lethal at 100 -110dB) (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

So he's a make up artist?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

was it on Real Sports? You know, i think gumbel is as insufferable as everyone else, but that show is great.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

apparently, yes.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

i've seen some truly fine journalism on that show in the past. the kind you rarely see anywhere else anymore. the show is on HBO. we only get basic cable these days, so i won't be seeing it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

So this would be worth trying to seek out.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I make Wayne Brady look like Ike Turner.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

How many Gumbel/Gumbles are there?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

DID ANYONE SEE THE SHOW?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

no.

not a gumbel, obv.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

No. THAT is Paolo Di Canio, you'll need to know about him for your move to London. He's pretty good and fun (as you can see).

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

people in london care about italian teams?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

That salute was when Paolo was playing for Lazio, but he has also plied his trade in England and Scotland.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Also that is fascism, which is something different.

Anyway, I'd really like to see this show. A number of my co-workers saw it and it disturbed them. So I'm thinking it's good.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

explain to me again how fascism doesn't, as a matter of course, incorporate racism?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Are we really going to turn this into one of those threads?

I'm actually parodying Paolo's OWN explanation for his actions, btw.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Di Canio once volleyed in a shot from left of goal near the top of the box for the Hammers that was among the most astounding shots I've ever seen. He once caught a cross in his arms despite having a pretty clear shot on goal after an opposing player uttered a horrible cry of pain. He also pushed a ref to the ground in a fit of pique. Apart from that he's an insufferable twat.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

no, i know that's di canio's explanation, nonsensical as it is. didn't know you were on first-name basis with him tho, heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

He's a cousin.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Him and Brian Peppers.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

you should really explain the whole fascism thing to him, then. and to berlusconi too, if he's also a distant cousin.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

ok

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

What was the thrust of Gumbel's piece? I do hope he managed to mention the word hooliganism, which under an act of Congress, has to be said whenever ones mentions 'European' and 'Soccer'.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Hstencil is moving to London?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, and he's becoming a homosexual.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

adam you god-damned scamp, you know that's going in his notebook.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

are you really stence? because i might be too!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

adam realsports is basically a "serious" sports news magazine where all of the reporters are old and drunk and they all look like bert sugar. what's good about it is that it's actual sports journalism that doesn't promote, ya know, sports.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

So London is the new Williamsburg?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking very seriously about moving to London before I ended up in Chicago, actually.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

well daddy's is opening a london branch...

I'm throwing bananas at this thread.

account settings (account), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:10 (twenty years ago)

haha!

There's another North Merkin ILXor supposedly moving to London this year, too.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

And a certain collusion of events could have me back, maybe this time next year. Though nothing definite.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

britishes gf's sort-of relations used to own the castle where milton's comus was first performed. thank you, oxford literary guide!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

If we happen to be there at the same time, I'd be glad to loan you a wax jacket and take on an absolutely splendid country walk!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

i went on an absolutely splendid country walk, around the state, with the dog, dude. too bad i did not have a rifle for all the wild pheasants, harumph.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

britishes gf's sort-of relations used to own the castle where milton's comus was first performed. thank you, oxford literary guide!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:22 (twenty years ago)

get used to it

couldn't find this show anywhere, btw.

It's called FIELDS OF HATE

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I can't help but be curious. Who is Gumbel? What was the report like? Is it worth me trying to find a torrent of it?

I saw it. The piece was fantastic. A lot of media outlets played bits of it afterwards in the US too. I even heard parts of it on Howard Stern. It made us feel a lot better about our rowdy behaviour as games.

Gumbel's a journalist, works/ed for NBC and a few other outlets. HBO Real Sports (who ran this piece) are like a hard news show on sports, a la 60 Minutes. ESPN's answer is Behind The Lines, which does much the same thing.

Basically, its really critical of the fans at games in Europe, but also shows how some progress has been made to thwart the tolerance for racist/facist fans in various European leagues, including the Premier League.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

get used to the oxford literary guide?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

It made us feel a lot better about our rowdy behaviour as games.

Oh, good for you.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Or, indeed, throughout English football, which has quite few other leagues too.

Is it available? I just don't believe that it could say it even handedly. There are racist fans in certain European countries, but it usually relates to the actual countries themselves; the character of racism takes its lead from the society itself.

Hence US racism is much more subtle, cos on the surface, it doesn't happen at all, and that's the truth that must be protected. In Hungary, it's very different, because racism is more harsher there. People boo black players and make monkey noises like people did in the UK 20 years ago, but unlike the UK, there is no ex-colonial immigration that will slowly challenge and change that, not least through problematising the 'nation state=white people only' underpinning of nationalist racism.
