I LOVE CELL PHONES

(There's no "Technology" category! WTF)

I just got a PHAT phone for my birthday. I don't think I'll be able to go back to a non-pimped phone ever again.

Please tell me about your favorite cell phone. Why is it your favorite? Is it TOTALLY PIMPED like mine or an awesome example of streamlined function and durability?

Dan (Yeah, I'm Bragging; Sue Me) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 21 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I want to get the RAZR clone that works with Sprint. All the PDA phones are too big to fit in my pocket, and I need a flip phone anyway, so I don't have to deal with locking and unlocking it to keep from dialing people randomly.

also I never use it

Okay, here's part of the pimped-out bit of the Treo:

It locks itself automatically so you have to perform a keypress to get it into a state where you can dial people.

WOOT

I am eagerly looking forward to importing my old contact lists into this beast; I've already got all of my work meetings for the rest of the year in it.

Dan (Geek) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 21 January 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Mine locks itself after a while too, and I can surf the internet with it (slowly, but fast enough to check ILX in the middle of the night when I can't sleep and it's too cold to get out of bed) but it's got a lot less keys. So you still win.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 21 January 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

mine is very simple but my mom pays for it so i can call home for free. so i'm cool with that.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

Mine is so basic that I am slightly surprised that I can actually make phone calls with it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

i have a much-loved nokia 7650, which is on its last legs.

following protracted and heated negotiations with my phone company today and yesterday - long, tedious, not worth repeating - i'm getting sent a motorola L6. w00t. as long as the third-party hack for iSync works, it should rock.

all i need is an inexpensive phone with a calendar and bluetooth. it's not much to ask, is it? but or*ng* seem to think so.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Sunday, 22 January 2006 01:08 (twenty years ago)

wow thats NICE Dan. How do the mp3s sound and how is the video recorder. The video recorder on my razr sucks ass (its about the only thing i dont like on it though) but Ive found out thats because t-mobile locked a bunch of features on the phone that I can unlock if I can work out how to do it.

I went without a cellphone for a long time so in dec of last year i rewarded myself with this bitchin' lil number for actual calls:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5946/pinkie8st.jpg

then pleasant plains gave me this, which i use only for data (even though its a phone as well). the keyboard absolutely rules:

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/103/sidekicker4db.jpg

and i love love love love them both. i wanted to get the sidekick all prettied up like below but it cost min $400 and with the way i throw shit around i dont think it would look like that for long:

Wait, JBR don't you have the one with a normal keypad? (3660)

no, mine has the rotary-style keypad. it's one of the main reasons i bought it!

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 01:25 (twenty years ago)

The 3660 has more colors in the screen IIRC. I am a sucker for TECHIE FEATURES. I should have gotten the 3650 because everyone thinks my phone is COOL now, but the rotary keypad would be INSANE.

jon, id be really interested to know how you do with this. its really tempting (is it true you can get up tp 10MB of memory once the phone is flashed? my razr runs out of memory stupidly fast) but I heard if you screw it up yr completely fucked.

sunny successor (katharine), Sunday, 22 January 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

who is your service with on the 650 Dan?

CINGULAR IN DA HEEZY

How do the mp3s sound and how is the video recorder.

I haven't listened to any mp3s yet, mostly because you HAVE to put them on a flash card and I don't currently have one (btw guess what I'm buying tomorrow). I've only made 1 video of my messy work cubicle and it was kind of choppy and grainy, but that's infinitely better than no ability to make any kind of video at all.

I've already got one semi-major gripe, namely that I'm not entirely certain that I can accurately edit contact info on my phone (at least, I can't edit it following any of the intuitive steps one might take; maybe stuff on my SIM card can't be edited? who knows). Right now I'm guessing that certain entries have to be edited via Palm Desktop/Outlook.

However that gripe is totally offset by how I'm SUPER-PSYCHED that I can sync against Outlook on my work computer and Palm Desktop on my home computer!

I'm a phone rockist, a querty keypad = I'm sorry, that's a jumped-up PDA

Which is EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED! Woot!

Dan (Where Is The Fellatio Attachment?) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Dude, she had a razr v3 (not v3i) but I had to delete the bluetooth entry in iSync for it to show up for usb sync.

WHY I HATE THE RAZR

1) It doesn't let you sync entries that are on the SIM only in phone memory
2) It has sync problems where it doesn't realize some phone number fields that are part of an entry are phone numbers. Somehow after syncing these entries to the computer (thus creating a name in address book), resyncing blew them away on the Razr.
3) The context menus on the Razr are awful.

Style over substance :(

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm a phone rockist, a querty keypad

i'd think a qwerty keypad would be more rockist. ;-)

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I lost about 20% of my contacts in the sync!

The positive view of this is that it gets rid of people I didn't want to talk to anyway, and will make me get back in contact with the people I really do want to talk to. xpost

Dan (A/S/L? I'm In Bad Religion) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I got it because it is pink and pretty. I've always had a weird aversion to setting up contacts on a cellphone. I only have 8 contacts now (including JW from NYE) and I rarely use them. I prefer to just key the phone number in when I'm calling someone rather than scroll through a list.

The sidekicker on the other hand has 50 contacts and rising but I use that more for email, real addresses and birthdays. It is a jumped up PDA but a jumped up PDA with email and real web browsing. I think its more like a mini wireless laptop that I can use anywhere. It has a decent image editing program too, so it covers all I really need. Curiously, you can't send picture messages. You have to email them. Oh and if someone send you a picture message it arrives as a link to the My Album thingy t-mobile have on their site.
Queer.
The qwerty keyboard kicks ass, btw. Texting is for chumps.

sunny successor (katharine), Sunday, 22 January 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

my L6 arrived yesterday. w00t. it's fucking lovely.

but, chiz chiz chiz, it doesn't sync with teh mac. BASTARD. even with the aforementioned sync.

i think this is the point where i bite the bullet and upgrade to 10.4. i mean: it's kinda dawned on me that almost any new phone isn't going to sync, given that i'm sitting using iSync 1.5 and everyone else is up to 2.1 (which only runs on tiger).

still, 'rah, i'll be able to use google earth, i s'pose. and ... er ... ooh, spotlight. and dashboard. meh.

my dad copped a RAZR in asia mad long ago, before it hit n. america,
never entered a single name+address (he looks em up out of his address book), never used a single feature besides 'send', destroyed it by slipping while salmon fishing and falling onto his ass pocket. I came home and found it in the garbage can. in his breifcase, a brand new one

im happy with my LG w 'fastap' texting buttons and random vibrating (dropped in shitter)

FDA to review wireless phone safety

The researchers at the Swedish National Institute for Working Life compared data from 2,200 cancer patients and an equal number of healthy patients.

Those who heavily used wireless phones had a 240 percent increased risk of a cancerous tumor on the side of the head where they used their phone, they reported.

Their results, published in the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, defined heavy use of wireless phones as 2,000 or more hours, or about one hour per day for 10 years.

LISTEN i have a question.

so im going to australia in december and i will probably need my cellie to call other australians while im there. t-mobile gave me the option of $1.49 per minute OR giving me an unlock code so i can use a local australian company while im down there. i want to do the latter, obv, but i have a vague memory of someone saying australian sim cards are a different size than US ones. Does anyone know if thats true? If its true for other countries?

GSM SIM cards should be the same worldover. A prepaid SIM will work in any unlocked phone (provided it supports the radio band of your Australian phone company, which it almost certainly will).

Just to be safe, I'd both turn on internationally dialing and unlock the phone. Bring your old SIM, and if you run into trouble with the prepaid then just switch back and use the ridiculously expensive international roaming rates.

but okay i know cell phones are not really for real conversations, usually. my brother's only phone is a cell phone, however - 20% of the time we have proper conversations, 80% of the time i cannot deal. do all cell phones have such crappy mics too, where all the background noise turns to high-freq pain transmission? it seems that way. my eaaarrrss ow.
it is all kind of frustrating
