Does the universe only exist because I think it does?

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No. And, yes. Did you know the internet doesn't exist either, even if you think it does?

alix, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hanle y - is it your fault the Universe is turquoise?

Pete, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Since reading about that, I've been listening to "Everything's Gone Green" by New Order with new found respect.

Trevor, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i made th euniverse the color of james bonds' c ock

mike hanle y, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the universe is quite clearly zx-spectrum CYAN you fules.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Of course, this thing about the universe being turqoise is essentially meaningless. It's somewhat akin to saying that if you mix all the foodstuffs in the world together you'll end up with a balti madras.

Trevor, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Num num.

Tom, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what about the universe inside my head man?

jel, Tuesday, 15 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight years pass...

Message to the photons of this newly discovered mindblowingly large (trillions of stars) galaxy cluster who have been underway for 7 billion years: welcome!

(sigh+lol @ Lawyers-Guns-n-Money06's comment, btw)

XP OP.

No. Since the energy sums up to zero, it could well just be some quantum fluctuation.

Does the universe only exist because I think it does?

Your peculiar version of the universe only exists in your own mind. It bears a vague family resemblance to the actual universe, which is its progenitor, but that resemblance suffers greatly from the admixture of many deeply held delusions.

Aimless, Saturday, 16 October 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

it never happened

What about the simulated universe?

First point: Even a simulation requires something to be real somewhere in order for the simulation to exist.

Second point: The universe is the only thing we can observe. Nothing outside the universe can be proved to exist. As mentioned in my first point, a simulation still requires a reality upon which the simulation must be founded. Therefore a hypothesis that the entire universe is simulated cannot be "proved", because it hypothesizes a reality that cannot be observed or proved to exist.

Third point: George Smoot is full of shit.

two weeks pass...

3:06 = talking about zombies made my eyes glaze over (what does this have to do with simulators)
4:58 = argument from probability fallacy (what is likely has no bearing on what is actual)
5:18 = begging the question fallacy (tell me more about the psychology of beings from other planets, please)
5:45 = circular reasoning fallacy (i believe it, that proves it)
9:42 = argument from "citation needed" (what makes you think that 1 in 3, or more, people is a sim)
13:08 = argument from invalid authority (google experts are not physicists, anthropologists or psychologists)
14:28 = self-refuting argument (human says he can prove hes not real, says it's not able to make such discernment)
14:38-17:40 "cool story bro" (not interesting nor relevant)
19:08-end = argument from ignorance (i dont know. therefore, conclusion is true)

'Existence' is such a nonsensical word.

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:34 (nine years ago)

And yet it exists.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:43 (nine years ago)

Which is nonsense.

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 17:56 (nine years ago)

but nonsense exists

F♯ A♯ (∞), Thursday, 16 June 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

nonsense!

Frederik B, Thursday, 16 June 2016 18:08 (nine years ago)

in what sense?

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 16 June 2016 18:09 (nine years ago)
