teeny (teeny), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

The drum kit part on "Helen Butte" fucks with my mind.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

I love when the first few posts on new Chicago threads come from non-Chicagoans.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

also, miles davis: from east st louis! reprazent!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

This is weird. I went to start an Amazon Wish List and didn't realize I already had stuff on there from like two years ago.

Anyway: I have a birthday in two months.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

It's time for non-Chicagoan posts to outnumber!

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm out the door - Kel and I are going to be The Ladies (and Lads) Who Lunch.

I don't like this video half as much as the song, but I heard this on a number of times on Saturday night and Sunday and it kind of blew my mind: http://www.krs5rc.com/krs/bands/thegossip/video/SITWOC.mov

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Finally, a thread named after an album I can get behind.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

john, a.a. wrote ir4. you were joking, right?

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

p.s. HI TEENY!

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I was joking!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I didn't know who was joking or not. All I know is that my professor alluded to sexing a Monkee in front of our class (I didn't know that "her friend P" was a Monkee at the time) and I don't know how I feel about that.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

All I know is that my professor alluded to sexing a Monkee in front of our class

was it patently obvious that she meant "monkee" and not "monkey" at the time? because i would've thought curious george before peter tork.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

He was always called "my friend Peter." I guess technically he could have been a monkey, but she's not bad looking. She's just not the best teacher I've ever had.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Note: bad looking =/= monkey sexing

that was a bad sentence.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

and totally not what i meant. and now, proudly, it sits at the top of the thread.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

not only that but "sexing a monkee" sounds like checking to see if they've got guy parts or lady bits.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 30 January 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

Finally, a thread named after an album I can get behind.

Oh, it's an awesome album. And as Rock pointed out, a total mindfuck. The shit is bananas.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to hear it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

I lost my copy so I haven't heard it in years. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Kenan even has an "On the Corner" t-shirt!!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, so from that other thread, Sarah, do I look like any Talking Head in particular?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh right, I was going to comment on that. When she said that I was about to be like, "Nah, they just have the same first name," and then I did a bit of imagigoogling, and lo and behold, there is a definite resemblance to Mr. Frantz.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Kenan even has an "On the Corner" t-shirt!!

Oh, and I treasure it so.

I'll get you a copy of the album, John.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I never really got into this : ( but my favorite period of Miles music is (KoB aside) his late-60s stuff w Wayne Shorter/Ron Carter/Tony Williams/Herbie Hancock etc

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 30 January 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

Anywayz jaymc i work in the loop now. We shd DO LUNCH some time.

deej.. (deej..), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

Word. Where is your office?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

GRIPEZONE:

I want to quit my job very, very badly, and am very close to pulling the trigger. Talk me in/out of it.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

When do you leave for school?

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! Casu, I meant Chris Frantz. I kind find a good pic of him right now though.

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

I can't find... duh

Sarah Kittensmew McLusky (coco), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

hay jaymc - i like 4/5 of yr amazon list. guess the odd man out!

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

School starts in May. I probably begin the move West in early April (with a layover at home in MN to work a bit and get resituated)

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Evan, don't quit. That's only four months. Hang pictures of Montana in your cubicle in teh meantime.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Two months of work, though! Feb and Mar. I'm not working past Mar. 31st, no matter what.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Gbx, I'm moving to MN at the end of march . . . if you want to share truck space or something to take a load up, let me know & we can work out some kind of deal.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Oh shit, yeah, just stick it out for two months. Spend a lot of time on line and enjoy your two weeks notice.

KELSEY - I am way out of the loop. You are moving at the end of March??? This is wonderful news! Do you have a job lined up? You can email me if you don't want to get into it (again) on line. But I'm very happy for you!

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

No job. My lease is up though . . . so it's as good a time as any, right?

I forgot that I should not post this shit online in case a certain person I work with were to ever discover my online life. Oh well.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know what that means.

Pete: is it the Carole King?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

Here's part of the problem, though: my employers THINK I'm into advertising as a career choice, and are "grooming" me. Like I've been put in charge of a project that has a lifespan WELL past Mar. I'll basically be quitting exactly when they need me the most.

I shouldn't feel bad about this ("just business"), but I'd feel better getting out sooner rather than later and avoiding the inevitable bad feelings and recriminations later on.

kels: h'mmmm....not a bad idea. I've got a car, but I know it's going to take more than one trip.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

I never really got into this : (

You are far from alone. People HATED this album when it came out. It's still one of the weirdest things he ever did.

but my favorite period of Miles music is (KoB aside) his late-60s stuff w Wayne Shorter/Ron Carter/Tony Williams/Herbie Hancock etc

OMG yeah. Search them all.
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd300/d369/d36910w212w.jpghttp://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre700/e726/e72680fsvew.jpghttp://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd500/d504/d50489c569i.jpghttp://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd500/d504/d50490xj8d1.jpg

And my absolute favorite Miles album is In a Silent Way. Matter of fact, the "In a Silent Way Sessions" box set is incredible all the way through, especially if you're a fan of the album. And me, I haven't gone more than a couple months without listening to it in the last, oh, 12 years.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

I agree about In A Silent Way. It's my favorite too.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Evan, maybe you could give them a months notice instead of just two weeks then, and offer to train somebody to take over the project they are grooming you with. That way you could keep working and not feel to guilty about screwing them a little. Not that you should - advertisers make a living out of screwing everybody else so you'd just be getting back a little bit.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I like the way you think.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

I used to listen those Miles Quintet albums a lot more than I do (selling those remasters for $9.99 is the best thing the music industry has ever done, though).

I think my tastes are gravitating toward simpler music more and more.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

JMC: its not the carole king! i love that album. its the book, dude.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Miles Smiles was always my favorite though, followed by Filles de Kilimanjaro.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

ugh - i hope an ilxor didnt write it. fuck. ill go check. its just that i dont like the ALBUM.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Nah. It was written by Joe Pernice of the Pernice Brothers. I don't even know the album that well qua album, but I like the Smiths, and it's a novella that somehow centers around the album (like a kid who's obsessed with it or something), so I mostly just like the conceit.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 January 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Uggggggh, I am putting off couch-buying INDEFINITELY since my roommate-to-be has two cats who will scratch things and my current 2nd-hand sofa was only $50. Too bad, cos I've already got my new couch picked out and everything. Another one for the "maybe some day" folder.

Nice one, Jay. That back doesn't look TOO too low and neither do the arms, but I think Robyn is right -- and as much as I love low, square, minimalist arms, they don't offer much support, either, for lounging & propping up head to watch TV.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the couch that I thought looked the most charming just did not feel comfortable at all for leaning back, as one likes to do.

Next step now is to actually buy a TV.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

goodbye, chicago! i will miss you. and maybe i will be back someday. PERMANENTLY.

gear (gear), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

Intriguing. La-La Land getting to you?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

The only time I miss having (cable) TV is when the Olympics are on. I really want to see this pop music a go-go opening ceremony now.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

there's only so much one man can take, and with all due respect to the LA'ers and the city itself (which i like more than i thought i would), it ain't chicago.

gear (gear), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

So, you know how you see something you really like but it's got maybe one or two features that you would tweak if you could? Well, I looked and looked and one day KABLAMMO opened a catalog and found a sofa I wouldn't make one single change to:

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e66/LimitedLiabilityGirl/PerfectSofa.jpg

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

All these sofas look like they'd be really uncomfortable to lie on. Then againa, as a tall man, no sofa can truly contain/comfort me.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Our couch story:

My old roommate and I lived in Atlanta with the worst futon in the world. When folded up into a couch, it pitched people forward so that you basically ended up kind of leaning against it, trying not to slide completely onto the floor. So, since I had a real job at that point, I decided to buy us a couch. Which I did, for $600, from Rooms to Go.

It's a dark blue velour couch, made of seemingly the same stuff that lint brushes are made of. Shortly thereafter, I got a gray, brown, and tan cat (some of you may know her - Sample DeKuyper) who proceeded to cover my new dark blue couch with contrasting cat hair.

THEN my old roommate's huge, idiot boyfriend, who is an inveterate flopper, flopped so hard on the couch that he broke it. Now, six years later, the couch is ripped and so covered in cat hair that we keep a cat-hair covered slip cover on it at all times, and has a huge black hole on one side so you kind of have to curl up in the hole if you want to use that end of the couch and the pillow back cushions are all warped and bizarre and it's uncomfortable and creepy and causes back pain.

The moral: $600 is a little cheap for a couch that you want to last for more than a couple years. Also, velour is a dumb fabric if you live with furry things.

Also, yes, John, you should totally get a cat. You'll soon stop being scared of it and start acquiring little cat collectibles and talking about your cat as if it was a little furry human.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

Aw, Dan -- my mom has zee, how you say, long legs in the family so she insisted on an 8-foot long sofa with a REALLY deep seat because she was tired of perching on things and/or not being able to lie down. Of course my feet don't touch the floor if I sit all the way back on it.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

I love sofas that look like that, all with the skeek lines and stuff, but then you realize that you're going to be sitting on it, not driving it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I think I have extremely low couch standards. My parents had (and still have) the same brown velvet couch I have pictures of myself lying on as an infant. That's one old-ass couch. And they're fine with it. It's quite saggy now, but my mom loves it.

Our current couch is cheap, lumpy, covered in a slip cover which is constantly covered in dog hair and dogs and, honestly, I'm totally ok with that.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

This is why tabby cats are the shit. Their hair blends with almost everything. Presto! Not as dirty!

Also, I really wanted to make a shitty D@shboard C0nfessional reference there, but I fought back the urge.

xxpost: Yeah, I don't need depth, but length is key. Failing length, some appropriate rounding or general scaling inclination of the armrests, rather than the squared-off examples above. They're nice couches, mind you.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, take the first part of that xxpost out of context... sigh.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

I should probably try it out first, but I guess I don't have great comfort demands when it comes to sofas. I just want to be able to fall asleep while watching movies. The single cushion minimizes things falling between the cracks and the lack of dust-ruffle simplifies vacuuming underneath. (My current sofa has the same lines but a) a dust ruffle, so I can never see what's underneath and b) 6 cushions total, which means things fall behind/beneath EVERYWHERE -- I swear to god it's like a huge crumb collector).

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

i have a karlander sleeper sofa from ikea. it weighs roughly 87,000 pounds and the cushions frequently slide out from under your ass when you sit on it for more than 10 minutes. but it does have an ottoman that's as long as the couch so you can kinda sorta lay down while still kinda sorta sitting up. hopefully it will fit in my new spiderhole.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Couches should be deep enough to accomodate spooning: human, canine or feline.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, Amanda: my parents have high couch standards but had NO budget when I was young...so they waited something like 15 years to buy a sofa -- ANY SOFA -- for the living room. Instead we had one old loveseat, one rocking chair, and a cushion-less church pew. Sounds comfy, eh??

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Spooning on the church pew: hott.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds like unresolved Catholic issues.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Our couch is big enough for spooning, and full-out stretching, even for big dudes. However, if one member of the spoon configuration falls in the hole on one side, it can get a little crazy.

Also, a pillow back couch is just nonsense, because we basically now have a couch with no back at all, just a collection of flat, worthless pillows.

I had a sofa bed hand-me-down from a cousin when I lived in Delaware the last time. I left it in my third floor apartment when I moved to Atlanta because you try and carry a sofa bed down three narrow, winding, flights of stairs. Gross.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

My ultimate sofa is probably styled something like this: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/coll.do?coll=RB1637&dept=RB156

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:51 (nineteen years ago)

That's precisely why I don't have a couch currently -- the previous one was a sofa bed, and it was a bitch to move. I have Sarah to thank for asking the question, "How much do you really love this couch, John?"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

Oooh Jen, that does look lovely and fluffy. Have never heard of that company, must investigate site further!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I love that sofa, jenny. But I could never take care of a white couch.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I wound up telling the white-couch story to my shopping companions yesterday.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, wait -- machine washable slip covers? I'm so there!

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

One of my favorite chick lit titles features the comparing of a really hot boyfriend to a white couch: you can love looking at it all you like, but sooner or later something is going to spill/someone is going to make a move on him.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

That goes for girlfriends too

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Just sayin'

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Oh hell no, not white. Even with a washable slip cover. I hate white furniture. White appliances, too. It's just a thing.

But I like the style, and would probably get a slip cover roughly the same color as the balls of cat hair I find around the apartment (although I'd prefer something that would look right at home in Norma Desmond's bedroom from Sunset Boulevard). But we can't afford a new couch any time soon so I'm just dreaming, dreaming, dreaming.

xpost: White sofas. I have a white husband, and I'm okay with that.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

you can love looking at it all you like, but sooner or later something is going to spill/someone is going to make a move on him.

Is she so insecure as to think that she could lose her boyfriend as easily as spilling grape juice? That's either a terrible metaphor or a terrible attitude towards SOs.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

(I think it might be both.)

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Jeff is white?!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

It ain't easy bein' white... all this pressure to be bright.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Well, it IS chick lit, and she's a bit of a flake who does get her head straightened out in the course of the book, blah blah standard stuff. But she does not, in fact, end up with the boy. Also much of the narrator's musing could have been lifted from my conversations w/ my last best girlfriend -- I think my phone wuz tapped! -- and the comments on her conservative evangelical background are zingy and so not-wrong. It's called The Big Love, incidentally.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

I stretch out on our sofa (ie- monopolize it, much to Nick's chagrin) more than I sit on it. It's so comfortable. It is also, however, ALWAYS covered in cat hair and has a big hold in one arm (the one the cats consider their scratching post). Also, it's purple. I would love to get a new couch someday - a dark gray one. We have a gray cat and a tabby cat, so I think we'd be fine.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

(a big HOLE, not hold)

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

This couch is the nicest one I've ever owned though. We paid $250 for it at a discount furniture store in our neighborhood soon after moving in @ 2 years ago. The previous one was bought for $50 at a yard sale.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

If we ever get our new couch, I'll give our old couch to anyone who comes and gets it.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, if anyone wants a futon, it's yours.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Of course, by the time we get a new couch, our old one will consist of a cracked frame that you can crawl into like a boat, six empty pillow covers, and a tall kitchen trash bag of cat hair.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

I've got a black leather couch that a former boss, a dot-com CEO, gave me when he got married. I didn't get the accompanying Patrick Nagel prints, unfortunately.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

You can probably swipe one from a beauty salon somewhere.

P.S. I finally got the Google Talk thingamajig. Just now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.kellyblair.com/biglove.html

Weird. I was just working with the girl that did this cover this morning.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

I will not buy an IKEA couch. Small end tables or coffee tables, but no couch. I'm going to do the couch thing right this time, and it's going to be heavy.

Jeff. (Jeff), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

John, I don't think you should get a cat right away. Maybe be open to a cat in need of a home & take that in.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry, I'm not planning on getting a cat.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

that couch jenny posted looks just like my friend's couch (only hers was red). i think i started posting about it and it got all xposty and i didn't bother. but it was the comfiest couch ever, soft and cushy and stretch-out-on-able. she sold it when she moved, and i was annoyed at her for selling such a perfect couch, and i wasn't in a place to buy it.

room and board is great, but pricey. i got my bed there on clearance...i think it's the only piece of non-crappy furniture i own. and it's quite non-crappy, i like it.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 13 February 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

New thread
