It's like June already

Tim and Greg through to meet each other in the Australian Open and Henman is now the highest seed left in the men's competition. AND, no Australians left at all. I never thought I'd say this but I'm getting quite into the tennis and it's only January.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

too early.

chris, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Come on Greg!

Jeff W, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*much* too early!

katie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tennis is crap. I refer the honourable gentlemen to last years Wimbledon thread (if I could be arsed to find it).

Pete, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tennis is OK - especially when Australians aren't allowed to play anymore.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim and Greg have made a tactical blunder here. They should have met in the finals.

Trevor, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah like we're British and Australia belongs to us so we can fix the draw like, innit

Jeff W, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tennis is glorious. But only when it involves British people winning. Or people who we seem to think are 'eccentric'. Hence, Wimbledon.

I am slowly becoming a raging tennis nut. The drama of this year's Australian Open is irresistable; the top five men vanish in a puff of smoke, Hingis returns to form, Venus hurts herself... I LOVE IT ALL.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh, what has Venus done to herself?

Jonnie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm starting to feel a bit defensive. Um, what's wrong with Australians?

Tim, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

She's got a chronic knee injury which flared up 20 minutes before her match with Kristina Brandi. Apparently, she struggled to beat her (as you can no doubt tell from the 6-3, 6-4 score, ha ha). This is the first sign of vulnerability that Venus has shown in months and she acknowledged in a post-match interview that any of the other top seeds could easily beat her if she didn't work out her knee issues.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(Obviously, my response was to Jonnie, not Tim, although I like the idea that the problem with Australians is that Venus Williams' knee flared up before her match.)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

your weird living down there and your summer in winter and your weirdo native creatures and your being awake in the middle of the night and your crocodile dundee and you're just plain not right

Graham, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and most of your sportsmen are somewhat arrogant, unfortunately. Tony David excepted.

chris, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And you kind of win quite a lot. But you're not going to the world cup are you, eh? (yeah, I know, neither are Scotland)

Jonnie, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tee hee

chris, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This thread started off so well.

Ally C, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Spare us the xenophobia, thanks.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 16 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jim, it's not xenophobia at all, I love Australia. I just have a problem with ultra-arrogant sportsmen and women who are bad losers (and winners), unfortunately Australia seems to breed a lot of them, for instance just look at the outburst by Leyton Hewitt after he got knocked out of the tennis the other day.

chris, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe that's because they're not used to losing. See also the German football team when they first started, erm, losing ...

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, fair enough. I pay no attention to sport at the best of times, so these sort of things pass me by as a general rule.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 17 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah right, so this is the Aussie Open thread.

Bizarre things happening in the first two rounds of the men's event - a dozen comebacks from two sets down, Hewitt, Kuerten, Kafelnikov, Grosjean all out, Agassi & Roddick injured. Henman not only the highest seed left, but also in the easier half of the draw.

Re-stating predictions:

Tim in 4 over Greg. Eventual semi-finalists: Federer, Sampras, Golmard, Henman; Capriati, Henin, Hingis, Raymond.

Of course, UK terrestrial telly is showing nary a single minute of the action. I think BBC sacked all its convicted date-rapists in a bit of a purge last autumn.
