buying a second hand car in the UK

I want to buy a second hand car on which to learn to drive. I know nothing about cars. Can I get something that might last about a year for, say, 500 quid? Autophiles, share your wisdom.

Yes. Look at the AutoTrader website. Go out and look at cars. You'd be surprised how much of a feeling you can get about a car just from looking at it. Pay attention to what you think of the person selling the car. Trust your judgement. If you feel something isn't right, it isn't.

You can get something to learn to drive in and that will last you a year for well under £500. The things to look for are recently taxed and MOT'd cars, as these will be better.

Also, if you wish to learn to drive, don't go overboard on engine power. This is a double whammy bonus, as less powerful cars are cheaper (both to buy and run).

...and are easier to learn in, was what I also meant to say.

nine years pass...

I'm just starting to think about buying a secondhand car for the first time.

I want something small, economical and reliable. Almost exclusively going to be just two of us driving about around Scotland, so we don't need loads of room and would rather have something cheap to run. Initially thinking of a Toyota Yaris because we had a few in our family that have done well. A first cursory scout around on gumtree suggests that I might get lucky with something around £1000, but that £1500 opens up the options a fair bit. Hoping to take a look at a few local gumtree cars this week...
