"Hooray for _End of the Spear_ and its evangelical message! Oh wait, an actor in it is gay, let's show we're a bunch of morons."

Lovely. That said, before the kneejerk instinct kicks in, it's important to note that many other Christian groups are far more thoughtful on these matters:

Bob Waliszewski, head of the media review department at Focus on the Family, said that he was saddened by e-mail messages from angry Christians who said they would not see the movie.

A generation of young people were inspired to become missionaries by the true story, and Mr. Waliszewski said he had hoped a new generation would be moved by "End of the Spear."

"Has Focus on the Family made a strong statement against homosexuality? Absolutely," he said. "But what is the message of the product? And do we at Focus feel compelled to check on the sexual history of everyone in a movie? Did they have a D.U.I.? Did they pay their taxes?"

Mr. Hanon echoed: "If we start measuring the sin of everyone in a movie, we would never be able to make a picture because none of us would be left."

And whoever thought I'd be giving credit to Focus on the Family, but anyway.

Destroy Earth any time now:
One Web log, nossobrii.blogspot .com, written by Kevin T. Bauder, president of Central Baptist Seminary in Minneapolis, stated in a Jan. 13 entry: "Granted, we must not overreact. And it would probably be an overreaction to firebomb these men's houses. But what they have done is no mistake. It is a calculated strategy."

(Not related, meanwhile, but the themes are of interest in terms of wider religious and political discussion:

Many evangelicals are concerned that young people inspired by the movie will look up Mr. Allen on the Web and "get exposed to his views on homosexuality, and that would cause some of them to question Biblical views of homosexuality and every other sin"

Oh no! Competing opinions leading to critical thinking! OH NOES!

Is there a branch of evangelism that considers it actively evil for people to question their beliefs? Way to make the Catholic Church look progressive, guys!

Is there a branch of evangelism that considers it actively evil for people to question their beliefs?

the undercurrent is there, but it's rarely openly voiced(in such a way as Pat Robertson might, f'rinstace)

Christ on Family Values:

10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
10:35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
10:36 And a man's foes [shall be] they of his own household.
10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Is this not what USA considers terrorism?

from the title, I first thought that "End of the Spear" was about the Spear of Destiny, and nazis hunting christian relics, etc.

Because I am a geek.

I should post this link again, since this guy mentions this flick in a tirade about how gay cowboy movies help out Osama:
It is an article of pinnacle stupidity to discover that one of the greatest American Christian martyrs of a generation, Nate Saint, is being portrayed by a homosexual actor in a film intended to inspire Christendom to great acts of moral imitation. This represents a deep failure on the part of evangelists and tellers of the story; the purpose of art is to imitate nature. What precisely is inspirational about the story of Nate Saint if the very person who portrays him in the movie cannot be moved to imitate Mr. Saint? It reduces the entire thing to people pretending, not people being moved. It sends the message that you can look good and not be good. In short, it sends all the wrong advancements. The people who made this movie, the family, etc, should immediately remove it from circulation and sue the actor for fraud. This is Nate Saint, not Pink Nate Goes to Prom. Good night.

Hi, I'm Andy, and I guess you could say I'm murder-curious.

Haha that blog in the second post has a comment which starts "Its a movie. Should Christians be involved in that stuff in the first place?".

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 2 February 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

They should just stick with fine Christian actors instead of doing casting, I mean that dude who "writes" the Left Behind books is paying a nice Christian guy to do his work, and it doesn't come off as hackwork at all...

Christian gang arrested in Guatemala
Last Updated Thu, 02 Feb 2006 11:23:47 EST
CBC News

Police in Guatemala have arrested a gang of religious fanatics on suspicion of possessing illegal weapons and extortion, and the possible murder of five people in a small town.

San Lucas Toliman, about 70 kilometres west of Guatemala City, was the target of the seven men, who called themselves the Social Cleansing of the Town, police allege.

They are also alleged to have killed as many as five people they considered criminals. Part of their purported work also involved setting up their own roadside checkpoints to charge travellers to pass through.

"This was a fundamentalist Christian organization in character that harangued the town's population on religious themes," said Victor Soto, head of the national criminal investigations unit.

The group allegedly targeted anyone suspected of not following the Bible, including taking part in theft or marital infidelity, said police.

Their work started with delivering notes containing biblical quotations and threats.

The seven are being held while police carry out ballistics tests.
