Tidying-up music folders

My music folder is a complete mess. I don't usually care but I'm about to buy an iPod so I want them all to be properly tagged and named. Can anyone recommend the easiest way to do this, and any other tips to avoid things getting out of hand again?

Move it all to a portable hard-drive and do it at work.

I just realized I really really need to do this. Also: buy portable hard-drive... Where are my robot helpers?!

There are some scripts from Doug's AppleScripts that will help immensely. MediaRage is also good.

i tunes will do this for you, but it only works if your tags are right. if you have untagged mp3s it doesn't know how to categorize them, dumps all of them into an unknown artist folder, and renames the files so you'll never find out what is what.

Use a tagging program to get the tags right -- go to http://www.musicbrainz.org and download according to what system you're on -- and iTunes to organize the folders. Definitely the easiest solution.
