why? this pope is an intelligent man but he's still the most powerful figure in one of the most evil organizations to ever exist.

How is the Catholic Church one of the most evil organization to ever exist?

i read it (twice).
its mostly a continution of the last encylcial of the last pope, with a firming up of his (radical) theology of the body, and a refutation of the jerome/augstine beliefs against sexual pleasure, at least deeply prescibed hetrosexist pleasure, but really what do you expect, he doesnt like fags.
it was also genorus to a fault, explaining that catholicism is not about legalism, but about what is in our hearts. this really shocked me, because this man has spent his life as a pharisee, as someone who seemed to care nothing else but the laws of catholicism, the theological niceties, and to say something else is a massive change.
its a document that reminded a lot of left/liberal/pomo/radical/poverty seeking catholics that our treatment of ratzinger has been unjust...that we have not given him a chance, and our lack of openess, charity and understanding not only betrays the humanist goals of this program, but is unchrist like.

But on a serious note, I'll read it. Andrew Sullivan seemed to find grounds for hope.

this man has spent his life as a pharisee, as someone who seemed to care nothing else but the laws of catholicism, the theological nicetiesThat's what prefects of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith do, and that was his job. This new job has other requirements that cause him to think in different ways, I presume.
