bulbs that melt in the heat of being ALIGHT wtf?

in the past i have been cavaliar abt the wattage of bulbs i put in desk lamps -- they say "60W" and i use 100W cz i work better in the bright, and the socket of the cheapy cheap desklamp eventually goes brittle and come apart and i have to get a new desklamp

ok so in a spasm of grown-upness i bought a buncha DESKLAMP specific little 60W bulbs so as to husband the world's deskplamp supplies -- since when THREE of them have in the past month just FALLEN OUT OF the lamp, the glass dome bit come adrift from the screw-in bit (which i then have to unscrew gingerly w.pliers)

i have NEVER ENCOUNTERED this before: is it common?

This one reminds me of an over-easy egg, which is always a plus:

I have no idea but you've reminded me of when I was a kid and my parents couldn't work out why light bulbs kept exploding around the house. It was, of course, because I was flicking water at them.

I bought a bloglight this morning. I hope it does not melt. But if it does, it is ALREADY a blob.

It sounds like you have just bought cheapo lamps, Mark. Stay away from Ikea!

bloglight?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

you have purchased neil young lightbulbs, mark. soon they will start singing to you plaintively about love and hardship while you're just trying to make some cheese on toast.

BWAH HAH HAH HAH, Freudian slip there. Bloblight.

Stay away from Ikea? Bollocks, I spent half of Sunday there and came back with two lamps :(

beanz (beanz), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

my ikea reading light is ok, kmmmv.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

ikea lamps look nice but fail fast: the lamps i have are from john lewis i think -- I STILL BLAME THE BULBS!!

haha: time to retell a tale of hackney purchase joy -- in the second nearest all-purpose mops dishes and binbags store, there is a shelf for what we are discussing -- my attention wz drawn to it (this is abt a year ago) by a hand-lettered cardboard sign reading simply: "BLUB" !!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

BLUB!!! Clearly I need to purchase a blub for my bloblight.

John Lewis? really? I would have thought them better quality non-melting lamps.

There actually exists a thread on lamps + cookery => I cannot resist posting a lamp I got as a present from my mum:

I have had bulbs fall apart in this manner before, yes. I was unnerved.

I am not cavalier about wattages, because the smell of overheating lighting fixtures can be very unpleasant.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 9 February 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's the cheapo bulb and lamp combo - I have had it a bunch of times too. I was buying generic no-name bulbs and putting into cheap desk lamps. Solved it by getting the Florescent twirly longlife bulbs that don't get so hot, yet project higher wattages/lumins so better lighting. I was skeptical at 1st, as I HATE Florescent lights, however these don't seem to give off the nasty Florescent glare, perhaps because they in a desk lamp and not overhead? They are a little pricey, but last forever and can be put into cheapo desk lamps (even the $9 jobs sold at office supply stores.)

Wiggy (Wiggy), Thursday, 9 February 2006 01:52 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
yes that is a v.good idea wiggy, tho hard to follow up when buyin emergency replacement lamps or bulbs in cheapjack shops in hackney: EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE BULBS FAILED IN THE SAME WAY, and i fcked up three (crappy) desklamps into the so-called bargain

i shd have made a note of the maker to name and shame on the interweb, but i threw the box away early in the precedure
