Anyone ever been to one? Do they still exist?

An ILX FAP at a roller disco would be awesome.

does anyone use "quad" skates anymore?

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Sunday, 5 February 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

the Roxy in nyc on wednesdays, though when I was there they didn't play enough classics. And the skating was too intense.

roller discos always sound GREAT in theory but for novices like me are sort of scary in their execution. and the roxy is too intense all around for me.

I use quads. My sister and I used to have a gang called the K City Rollers, we all had matching pink quads. This is like 2 years ago.

There's always Central Park on Sundays - outdoors, relaxed, plenty of classics and the rollerblades are few and far between.

one month passes...
I went to EMPIRE SKATE last night! Apparently the deal is, there's a huge rink in the Bronx that was the birthplace of roller disco (although Empire is also very old) and it closed LAST WEEK. So I think there were a lot of emigrés. Empire, on the far side of Prospect Park, has an absolutely huge main oval with an area in the middle for relaxing, talking and more stationary dancing, and a smaller rink in the back if you don't want the huge vibe of the main one. The DJ played house classics and even got into some Chain Reaction type stuff for a bit (which was PERFECT) and suddenly the lights dimmed and it all went slow jams for awhile, the tempo gradually increasing into hip hop. I fell flat on my ass twice. Most everybody was really really good, just swooping around, jumping and gliding, backwards and sideways and holding each other close at times. The speed of the main oval could get a little scary sometimes.

Actually sorry I think it's called "Empire Roller Skating Center"

Tuesdays are "ladies night" by the way - $6, skates included, if you are not a man.

K-classic! ID thrifts have RAD quad skates all the time and I've got a pretty neat collection. The small towns here still have all their roller discos and drive-in theatres. I spent so many Saturdays at Starlite Skating --- skating until 9 and then bands would play on the stage afterwards, same light show no matter what. Truly great stuff.

Last night I felt that roller disco is one of the great human achievements in any sphere.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha ha, Latham Circle Mall. In younger, boreder days, we used to drive round and round the Latham Circle as fast as we could without flying off.
