If you must know, a lot of us are/were college students who participate in Belegarth, a full-contact combat simulation using foam weapons. The costuming can be from fantasy and history. We use foam weapons that are designed to be swung full force and not injure the target. The armor must be made of period materials so chainmail, leather and plate are used in the construction. While some armor may not be the most attractive, it gives you some protection.
When I say full-contact, I mean football/wrestling/martial arts full contact. Our events easily top 400 and are a lot of fun for both the jock and the nerd, The nightlife is lots of drinking and hanging out after a full day of fighting.
Anyway, some of you might find this interesting so check out Belegarth.com and see if there is a group near you.
― V'Hil, Sunday, 23 April 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)
All the armor is made of period materials i.e. iron/steel and leather and the weapons are foam so they don't maim the person hit.
Anyway, check it out!!

Treebeard and the other Ents have decided to not have any involvement in the war, deciding rather to "weather such things as they have always done". Despite this, Pippin manages to cleverly take Treebeard to the section of Fangorn Saruman has recently decimated near Isengard. Treebeard is filled with rage at Saruman's betrayal and commands all the other Ents to seek vengeance.
yeah the oldest wisest creatures on the planet don't know what is happening in their own back yard and have to be tricked by a couple of wideboy hobbits.
GOD.

― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 2 December 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)
The Tolk has these really weird variations in tone, and it doesn't read as simply appropriate to the geography of the story. Like okay maybe he wants the Shire stuff to read like cutesy shit but it just comes across as more child-oriented writing that he beefs up once he gets his war on. And Frodo's little Sauron mind-trip when he has the ring on just before the Fellowship splits up is v. weird: "Verily I come unto you" or whatever just clonks with its out of place Biblical allusion. Maybe it was a sly dig at Lewis.
― absinthe of malithe (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 2 December 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)
he's a patchy writer and too mired in technicalities for me to enjoy now the way I did when I was 13, for sure. I kind of feel like Lewis bested him, for me anyway, in the end, by being a better writer, with a more human touch; his books have more emotional weight to them. LotR is kind of like "lots of shit happens and here's some battle details also some language and midgets'. still, you know, like the most important thing to me ever for a year or two as a kid.

lol see, I finished both the Belgariad and the Mallore0n, even though it was basically the same book written 10 times
in that vein, Goodkind is much, much better (although still not great; really in the world of pulpy modern epic fantasy no one is going to beat Jordan, Sanderson or Martin)

Haven't read any of those except the first few WoTs so can't compare, but I think my favourite in this ilk is Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn.
