comedy accents

I have to agree with this Guardian woman. I find it intensely annoying. Sort of patronising too. Southern English tend to do comedy Northern. Americans from the north do comedy Southern. Australians do comedy Ocker. I wonder if the French do comedy Quebec or something.

Although I don't really relate to the author's analysis of why people do it, ie that it's about women belittling themselves.

I was very confused by that, it seemed like she was trying to tack two unrelated articles together when she started on that tack.

The writer (ahem Deputy Fashion Editor) is American and according to the piece, believes that this is something that Just Women do to appear to be more down-to-earth/less threatening. YES it is an annoying habit but one not just limited to women!

"Comedy accents are a feminist issue"

That article is bollocks. First, I know plenty of men who do comedy accents, although I'm ready to admit that slightly more women do it. Secondly, women just as likely to do it to other women than to men. Thirdly, I really don't think it's got anything to do with clothing an opinion in self-deprecating inverted commas, the things people say in comedy accents are rarely important content-wise. There's nothing to analyse about comedy accents except to say there just one among hundreds of different forms of social lubrication (albeit a slightly annoying one).

Well, I have a 'legit' claim to a Newcastle(ish) accent, although it didn't stop me using broad scouse to a scouser one time, when she asked the time of a bus.
