New jobs 2006

This is my first post from my new job.

+ The university messed up and bought me a 20 inch mactel iMac instead of G5.
- I won't have proper internet for 24 hours (have to register with HR this afternoon, have to wait 24 hours for MAC/OUI address to register [IT is the same everywhere]) so I am using GPRS [my HTTP proxy breaks cookies].
+ I am evaluating version control systems right now.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

New jobs are awesome. What's a version control system?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

SVN >>> CVS

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

In fact, we all know real men don't use version control, we create multiple copies of everything, strew them all over the hard drive and keep post it notes on the desk as slight clues in the treasure hunt of code.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

tissp! -- it looks like we are going with SVN -- GNU Arch really doesn't hold up, is less mature or have as much integration.

The benefits RULE -- they match double my retirement contributions!

My computer is so fast and it has PHOTOBOOTH.

jw, Monday, 6 February 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

Hooray for SVN. Though that said, the web interface we use is awful (not sure which it is/whether there are other available).

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 6 February 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

congrats, jon! esp. since yer smart enough to be thinking about retirement savings at yer young age.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 6 February 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

i'd be thinking about it too if someone was doubling my contributions!

Aaaaaaaand my company has just been sold. All of our jobs have been guaranteed, though -- oh sure, I feel better already.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Ten minutes ago I got the phone call I wanted, and now I have a new job.

ABOUT. FUCKING. TIME.

SO. FUCKING. PSYCHED.

That is all.

xero (xero), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

I like this trend - I start me a new job in March!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I just got a new one with better pay and benefits, and it's only three miles from my house. Yay, goodbye forever, one hour commute.

jxnx (jxnx), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

So, Jon...will there be usual Monday drinks or are you taking it easy now that you're a working fella?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

where u work, laurel?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Previously Time W*rner, on the book side, but we've been sold off to a French publishing giant as of today.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

you work with c1ndy 3ag4n, by any chance?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

I do I do and I love Cindy!

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

oh! we submitted to her. she liked it, but didnt think it "would stand out on L1ttle, Br0wn’s bestselling list of fiction for teenage girls."

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

That's too bad, I would love to reprint your book, Phil. But I suspect maybe a little racy for the 11-17-yr old age group...? In any case, C1ndy's triffic.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

11 year olds dont want to get gangbanged by russian mafia dudes, and snort lines off their thick slavic cocks?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Remind me of this book you wrote again?

oh, its just this trashy book about the m0del d0rm. just sold the hebrew translation rights today!!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:13 (nineteen years ago)

I know you've been asked this before, dude, but: where and how does a non-gay get to live in a m0del d0rm? And do they have them in, say, Bozeman MT?

gbx (skowly), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

i thought you lived in chicago?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

i know a guy who has a big loft in chinatown with like 4 bedrooms and he just advertises in industry rags and always has a slew of ultra-skinny 16-year olds tromping through his living room, either silent and slavic or from kentucky with their mom keeping one eye on the franks and beans and the other eye on any men in the room

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am moving to MT for a year.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

this is not very appealing.

gbx (skowly), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

I tend to think the m0del d0rm wasn't really very appealing either, Jib, once you scratched the surface. I haven't read the manuscript or anything, it's just a feeling....

Speaking of the ms, Phil, when will you have bound galleys?

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

i know a guy who has a big loft in chinatown with like 4 bedrooms

Saving for retirement can be fun!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'm now trying not to despair that my experience level isn't getting me any interviews, and when I do, why should they choose me over any other candidate etc etc etc which is more an esteem thing more than anything else.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)
