as in Los Angeles. i'm staying with my mom & sis in some fancy organic-food hotel with Aveda products in the bathrooms. in santa monica. any suggestions on what i should DEFINITELY see? not that i'll get much of a chance to read this before i take off...

when i asked that to some co-workers and friends, all anyone could tell me was that i had to go to the Getty. we're going.

also, what music would be a good soundtrack to my visit? all i have so far is Van Dyke Parks' "Song Cycle," and i don't think it gets more L.A. than that. i wanted to bring Day of the Locust by Nathanael West to re-read but i can't find it :(

BLAH BLAH BLAH

shadeball (chaki), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:11 (nineteen years ago)

i want to see larry david walking around.

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yay sweet drunkery. Alas that I must miss all this goodness!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

he eats at stanleys in sherman oaks sometimes

shadeball (chaki), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, go to the Getty and see all those stolen antiquities before they have to return them. Go record shopping at Amoeba, check out Olvera Street, Hollywood Blvd., Santa Monica Pier (don't know if it's happening in Feb.). Other museums to check out are MOCA (and the Disney Concert Hall across the street), the Museum of Jurassic Technology (never been, but I heard it's a trip), the Museum of Tolerance, and the La Brea Tar Pits. The Griffith Observatory is fun but closed for renovations. That's all the fun family-type stuff I could think of off the top of my head.
How long are you going to be in LA? Does being with your mom and sister mean that you can't go out to shows/clubs/bars at night?

Forever Changes is a very LA record, see also West Coast gangsta rap.

naus (Robert T), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

When I think Los Angeles, I think STEELY DAN.

I have also never been to LA.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry, I made a mistake. The Museum of Tolerance is not "fun". It's poignant.

naus (Robert T), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

only later SD earlier is newyork. also good LA music: FEAR (the album), Mingus Ah Um! When you do go to the Getty, have a picnic in a garden!

shadeball (chaki), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

haha, i've read about all naus' stuff in our guidebook. all i know we're doing for sure is a 20 mile bike ride somewhere near or in or around santa monica, the Getty, eating at Patrick's, going to one of the "drives" to look at the shops, hanging out near the beach.

nighttime activities with my traveling companions will probably not involve going out to bars b/c my li'l sis is only 20.

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

thanks everyone! i have to wake up in about 5 hours for my flight, so nighty-night!

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:46 (nineteen years ago)

the Getty is worth it for the view, but you can get it other ways too

Drive the lengths of Wilshire and Sunset (switch to Hollywood between Gower and La Brea) Boulevards, consider Mulholland Drive, Silverlake Boulevard, and the PCH up to Malibu

Explore Venice on foot: the beach, canals, and houses by day, Abbot-Kinney at dusk (you could get coffee here with your sis at night)

Check out El Pueblo (and Union Station), and drive across the LA River into Boyle Heights.

for architecture, see Greene & Greene's Gamble House, Gehry's Disney Concert Hall (and Chiat/Day/Mojo building), the inside of the Bradbury Building. and there's lots of Wright, Schindler and Neutra as well.

for museums, visit the Norton Simon first, consider the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry), and check out what's on at the Hammer

for nature, visit Griffith Park, Will Rogers State Park or Runyon Canyon

shopping - the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Fred Segal are nearby, but head to Hollywood and check out the stores on Melrose East of Fairfax, and on La Brea North of Wilshire

Take a studio tour at Warner Brothers or the Sony Pictures studio in Culver City (if you go down this way, take Motor Ave through Rancho Park). I don't think Paramount does tours anymore, but make sure to see the gates.

LA isn't the best walking city, but you can find urbanish foot-friendliness if you go for campuses - UCLA/Westwood Village, Exposition Park (with museums) by USC, and beautiful (but small) Cal-Tech

for really really great vegan food in Santa Monica go to REAL FOOD DAILY and apparently you can get into Santa Monica bars at the tender age of 16. just ask KCRW's Chris Doritas!

shadeball (chaki), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

didn't you just stat a thread about what to do in nyc like two days ago? are you going to keep this coast hopping pattern up? i hope so, about all i've done new in the past two days is try a new type of krispy kreme donut.

no bones, Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:03 (nineteen years ago)

gear (gear), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

gygax told me about a place called sushi gen in downtown? i would like to try that. i would also like to try this in-n-out burger, and i would also like to sleep with a celebrity. chaki suggested greg kinnear.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

gygax told me about a place called sushi gen in downtown? i would like to try that.

There's several thousand sushi places on 2nd St. in Little Tokyo downtown. Sushi Komasa is my favorite for price-per-freshness, but you can't go wrong with most of the places there.

Center For Land User Information

center for land use interpretation, cough cough.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

walk (it's a longish walk) South on Sweetzer to Willoughby. turn right/West on Willoughby a block (?) over to Kings Road. turn left/South to the Schindler House (between Willoughby and Waring). continue South to Melrose. a short distance to your right/West is Jozu. stop here (or continue a few blocks further to Lucques) for a drink. then turn around in the other direction and walk (a longish walk) East on Melrose to Fairfax. lots of shopping starts here.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

The best part is Gabbneb has never even been to L.A.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

LA is kinda fun. made some new friends. went to some party in a sushi bar in a strip mall on sunset blvd. they were playing techno and there was a stripper and some dance troupe that had a synchronized dance routine thing going on, like a michael jackson video. i was stuck in the standard all day though. but they have bottles of somewhat decent champagne for only $24!!!!! so i had a couple of those. last nite was a mess though. i got lost in the hollywood hills looking for some party, and almost got eaten by a dog when i thought i would take a shrotcut thru someone's property. oops. anyways, anything fun going on this weekend? gregory mentioned a boat party that looks fun, but i have a fear of boats

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

but they have bottles of somewhat decent champagne for only $24!!!!!

I R confused, what do you normally see them retailing for?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

bottles of decent champagne in a hotel, especially a place like the standard, are usually priced at heart attack levels. you're lucky to get a bottle of house wine for $24.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 10 February 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Ah right, I missed that part. For a second I'm all, "Is Moet et Chandon priced at $75 at the East Coast Trader Joe's or something?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

If you really want to catch Larry David try Stroh's Gourmet on Abbot-Kinney in Venice for lunch. I didn't reallize that the white-haired gentleman who kindly shared his table with us was you-know-who until my brother informed me after L.D. had left. I'm dumb about these things. Abbot-Kinney in general is good for strolling along, actually - much better than anywhere in Sta Monica.

Since you're staying in Sta Monica, Chez Jay restaurant and bar is kind of fun. It was Chris Penn's hangout - r.i.p. - and has a warm, salty-dog feel that good for visitors.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 10 February 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Sharing a table with Larry David would be quite daunting. you didn't get into a row about napkins or anything did you?

bidfurd__, Friday, 10 February 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha - He was quiet as a mouse. Maybe he was just so astonished that someone would have the gall to ask to share his table that it kept him quiet. I had no idea who he was and my young brother is a discreet kid. The fact we were in beachy Venice probably helped. Anything goes there, bro

Thea (Thea), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

anyways, anything fun going on this weekend?

Plenty!

Tonight:
- A midnight showing of Over The Edge at the Nuart.

Saturday:
- "Vacation: Dauphin Island" at the CLUI
- Double bill of The Passenger and Five Easy Pieces at the New Beverly.
- "Secret Gallery Secret Moonshine" at Machine Project at 8pm. Bootleg hooch at an art gallery!

Sunday:
- Going to the Hammer for the other part of "Masters Of American Comics" show (link upthread).

The Equator Lounge (Chris Barrus), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I might be down again soon, yo.

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone lucky enough to be able to go and see Marco Brambilla's "Sync" in Santa Monica should really do so on my behalf.

Lil' Eno (nordicskilla), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

im stuck in west hollywood at my friend's house. got no car. who wants to pick me up and drive me around and hang out? oh sounds like fun!

Killy, Phil:

How was LA? What did you end up doing?

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 16 February 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

um, well, i didn't have a car so i didn't get to do much touristing. but here's what i did.

wednesday: grammys. sony party. emi party. drank lots and lots of free champagne. got lost in the hollywood hills looking for kanye's houseparty.

thursday: hungover. sat around the standard hollywood. had lunch in the cafe there and saw stanford from sex & city and also this horrible fag i recognize from new york screaming into his cell phone about how fabulous his fashion show was but how "ghetto people" ruined his afterparty. dinner at gaucho (lots and lots and lots of meat). then back to standard hollywood where a friend of a friend was dj'ing. drooled on the friend of a friend's boyfriend. then went to some sushi bar strip mall that had karaoke in one room, and techno party in the other room with a stripper and a choreographed dance routine.

friday: walked along melrose ave shopping. bought a seersucker hat from marc jacobs. and a pair of cashmere socks. saw kelly and sharon osborne there. walked to fred segal. bought nothing. hated the sales staff there. went to vine bar. doorguy not so friendly. drooled on friend-of-friend's boyfriend again. traded him a drink for some drugs. tried to find an afterhours. why things stop at 2am?

saturday: hungover. watched basketball. went shopping at american rag. unimpressed. had an in-n-out burger. orgasmed. tried to go to the warehouse party, but couldn't convince anyone to drive me.

sunday: not hungover. went to church. changed my flight from monday to tuesday because a meeting came up. went to some karaoke thing at the dressing room. drooled on friend of a friend's boyfriend AND drooled on another friend of a friend who i remember finding really attractive from a tv commercial. not as cute as the verizon guy, or the taco bell "good to go" guy, the UPS brown guy, or the burger king guy who licks jessica alba's cardboard cutout though. people do karaoke so much better in LA. maybe because theyre all actors or musical theatre types. and some guy in the bathroom gave me free drugs. LA is so friendly

monday: hungover. meeting got cancelled. watched soap operas. had sushi at a place on santa monica and sweetzer called Yoshi's, or something like that. was really really really good. maybe not for LA, but its hard to find good sushi in NY.

tuesday: got 1 hour of sleep, and caught my 6am flight back home. tried to sleep on the plane, but there was a huge chinese tourgroup on the flight and they spent the entire time screaming in cantonese and farting.

so yeah, that was my trip to LA. did absolutely nothing of interest. just ate, shopped, drank, and drooled. kinda sad.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 16 February 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

oh! and i met spencer at the vine bar! very handsome. i tried to drool on his friend, but i didn't get close enough.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 16 February 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Killy, Phil:

How was LA? What did you end up doing?

Wedn: ate at Real Food Daily (near our hotel in santa monica), saw michael richards there (how close to larry david can you possibly get? come on!), and elizabeth berkeley. weird.

Thurs: rode bikes around santa monica, venice, marina del rey, etc. drove around sunset boulevard.

Friday: went to the Getty. SO BOOTEEFUL. my mom insisted that we drive along Mulholland Drive, but she mistakenly had us begin going EAST from the PCH instead of from the 405, so we had a really scary cliff-side adventure on Mulholland HIGHWAY through the canyons.

Saturday: rode bikes again. bought stuff at american apparel. hung out at the airport with my sister.

Sunday: went to the airport at 5:30am. flight to phila cancelled due to snowstorm. took the airport shuttle to manhattan beach. i made a sand sculpture.

Monday: went to the airport at 5:30am. flight to phila on time!
