Depends what you mean by "scientifically".

It's pretty established that high stress levels cause premature aging, but I don't think that it's very likely that someone's hair would go white overnight, for example.

What's the deal with the white patch at the back of Henry Rollin's head? Does he just worry a little bit?

this could explain why i first got grey hairs when I was in my 4th or 5th year of university.

Because you were worried about Rollins?

I don't know -- I do think that a very stressful experience or illness or injury, whatever, can set it off. I just learned the other day that my great grandmother, the incomparable Ida Belle Smith, had white hair from her early 20s. Apparently she had a very difficult second childbirth at which the old country doctor finally used ether to knock 'er out, and after which ALL of her hair fell out. My mother says when it grew back, it was snow white.

My dad's mom also had snow white hair starting in her early 20s.

"Smith"???? Lordy no, it's Ida Belle Moore. My mother would kill me.

a friend of mine grew a white patch (of hair) on the back of his head after a particularly stressful semester in college. it's snow white, resistanct to dyeing and you can't cut it.

well you can, but it's still really white and mysterious looking.

Isn't that called piebaldness? That streak of white hair? I don't remember where I heard that.

ive just seen on tv a man who was in jail for 20 days for something he didnt do.
when he came out, the camera caught him with half-white hair.
20 days before that - it was totally black.

no hair-dye in the slammer?

Re Rollins: Some people are just born with white patches of hair -- it's sort of the hair equivalent of a birthmark, I think. My high-school friend Adam has one. So does John Henson, who hosted TV's Talk Soup.
