lemsip: classic or dud

Amazing! I am having a stinking cold and one mug of lemsip later I feel nothing! Like, no pain, no joy, no headaches, no hate, no love! And no runny nose!!!!!

What are the side effects to all these numbness? Where does all the mucus go now? Does it actually make the illness itself go away slower? Would I die if I have more than the 1 sachet per 4-6 hours recommended?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

snort it

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

I read that doubling the recommended daily dose of paracetemol can start fucking up your liver, so best not.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

You wouldn't die but your liver would be damaged long term (xpost). Don't snort it, melt in spoon and inject into blood vessels under eyes. Hardcore!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

take the best sex you've ever had and multiply it by a thousand and it still...

sorry i've lost my thread

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty bad at maths too.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

C+++!!!

Mitya (mitya), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Beechams Cold and Flu is better - no aspartame!

She's In Parties (kate), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't make the illness go away any faster.

I am against Lemsip. I'd rather just swallow a couple of paracetemol and have a hot whiskey. Although Mister Monkey speaks highly of Lemsip with a dash of limoncello. Bleurrgh.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. kill or cure yeah?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer a mug of 1/2 lemon juice, hot water and a couple of spoonfuls in honey.

none of this stuff cures, right? it just makes u feel better i think.

my hot lemon and honey is real good for sore throats, and all lemon flavoured drink (cf lemon tea in a teabag) taste vile cos the lemon flavouring is so rank

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

what's aspartame??

oh i would have a whiskey now but i'm at work you see!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Nutrasweet. breaks down into chemicals that cause brain damage when boiled.

She's In Parties (kate), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

i've moved onto beechams as well, lemsips were doing nothing for me. beechams aren't much better, you may as well knock back a couple of para's

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

ps. ken c please don't pass us your stinking illness via the interweb. thx

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

*sneeze*

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

i've already had a whole month of it, it was the worst cold i've ever known
(i did catch it from over the pond tho and they say things are always bigger over there)

oh i would have a whiskey now but i'm at work you see!

And? Driving a forklift, are you? If not, whack a whiskey into you. Better you sleep the day away on their time rather than yours.

I'm not doing much for my national stereotype here, I suspect.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Sudafed max is where you need to be. It's like scouring your sinuses with a mixture of ground glass and cheap speed. Foolishly I had some late yesterday evening and couldn't get to sleep till after two. They've taken pseudoephedrine out of lemsip Max now, so it can be sold from non-pharmacies. Phenylephrine HCL just isn't nearly as effective.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Blackcurrant lemsip is delicious. I too like adding a drop of whisky to a honey and lemon drink - it tastes REALLY good.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

what's pseudoephedrine?

oh noes!!! i think the water was semi-boiling when i did a couple of cups of lemsip last night!!! i mean the packet said "NOT BOILING WATER" but they didn't tell me if i do it with it boiling i'd get BRAIN CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111

I just thought it's like canned soup where it would just impair the taste!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

how much paracetamol can you take a day before it fucks up your liver?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

i wish i didn't have 5 sachets instead of 4 last night now :( i didn't know i was signing my own death warrent :(

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

warrant.

it's affected my spelling already :(

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Well Ken, be our guinea pig. Try it and see

xpost - cromulentmonkey, that is not helping us abroad at all. Why not talk about holistic cures or something?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

i think i've already tried it kv :(

apparently single doze of 10g a day or chronic doze of 5g per day for a well nourished non-alcohol user.

4g a day for a poorly-nourished user of alcohol HELLO! i'm screwed

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Oh woah, I never knew that. Well at least my liver has been well trained to fight all comers. It is shaolin liver. Poorly nourished? Do they not know that there's LOADS of nutrients in crisps.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

I have a great fondness for lemsip, It's very annoying they don't have it here, just powdery lemon-y equivalents. Why can't you have it with boiling water again? I'm concerned.

But surely boiling means 100 degrees C and bubbling like a fucker which the water never is once it goes from kettle to cup so maybe I shouldn't be.

uptoeleven (uptoeleven), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

What altitude do you live at and what's the barometric pressure?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

echinacea - c or d?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

I love Lemsip. I sometimes drink it when I'm feeling perfectly healthy.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Thursday, 9 February 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

oh man i had my last cup at 1:11pm i'd have to wait til around 5:40pm to hae another one now and my nose is runny again! stupid liver.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Are you as protective of your liver when it comes to drinking alcohol?

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

well yeah i would if i know that 5 mugs of booze will KILL ME IN 3 DAYS

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Collapse of the liver brought about by too much paracetomol is not as cool as through drinking. Just look at G30rge Best, man was a wife beating prick but hey, what a cool guy.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

When I'm rich and famous I might get me a lemsip addiction.

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

nah lemsip is rub, it's only good if you've squished half an actual lemon and a jar of honey and a bottle of whisky and a couple of cloves of garlic and a couple of actual cloves and some chillies in there too. THEN it kicks arse.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

that actually sounds like it would kick arse without the lemsip in it at all!

Like those "part of this nutricious breakfast!" which showed the rubbish sugary cereal surrounded by fruit, toast, juice, milk, etc. - which would have been just as nutricious had the cereal not been present.

She's In Parties (kate), Thursday, 9 February 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

that actually sounds like it would kick arse without the lemsip in it at all!

well yeah, exactly. the lemsip is there because people like to feel they are taking official medicine, it's comforting. if you make the above sans lemsip and do a couple of paracetamol or whatever, it'll be the same. better, even.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

Lemsip's rubbish, never works for me

Dadaismus PBUH (Dada), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

dudes - don't mix paracetamol with whiskey!!!!!!111111111111111!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

i'm dying in 2 days i don't want you guys following my doomed footsteps also

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Is too much lemsip a bit like a slower five point palm exploding heart technique, then?

chap who would dare to be completely sober on the internet (chap), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

yes, but without the wanking

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

It is good fr the throat and chest after too much of teh marijuana, i find.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

You can die from paracetamol poisioning ya. I doubt lemsip even has as much in it as a normal panadol (500mg per tablet, so 2xtabs = 1g paracetamol).

I take um, 8 paracetamol/codeines almost every day. And I drink. I'm still in one piece and my liver is ok. But dont follow my lead fr the love of god.

PS lemsip/panadol does nothin whatsoever for a runny nose! It will reduce fever but thats it. Best cold cure = 2 x panadienes + 1 x sudafed + lots of water. (that way you get more painkilling codiene than if you have say, a codral)

Man I know too much about OTC meds.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 February 2006 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

I can't really take tablets, so I have to use Lemsip (or similar) for any pain that I have (hangover/period/cold/etc). It works, although I think it is partly because any hot drink tends to make me feel at least a little bit better.

emil.y (emil.y), Friday, 10 February 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

you guys get codeine otc?
xpost

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 10 February 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

OTC at pharmacies, yeah. No prescrption. I gather that isnt the case in the US, which means for the time being, I cannot see myself being able to travel there because if I have to go without it I'll be very cranky.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 February 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sure you could bring it with you... i don't think they've ever looked at my tioletries bag in an airport.

man, jealous. it's a controlled substance here, only available by prescription.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 10 February 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

Thats why Im not sure I could bring any.. tho maybe I could pretend its panadol heh. Gawd I sound like a lameass faux junkie haha.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 February 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

i think my roommate brought some codeine laced cough syrup back from germany with her, so you might be fine.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 10 February 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Thats why Im not sure I could bring any.. tho maybe I could pretend its panadol heh. Gawd I sound like a lameass faux junkie haha.

You can happily bring any over the counter meds in with you. Just stick them in your luggage. No-one will care. Okay, maybe if you were bringing enough to sell, that might be different. But I've always been questioned like a crim when buying Nurofen Plus in New Zealand or Canada, and as far as I remember you can't buy Zovirax over the counter in France, so I always bring those things with me when I travel.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

That happens here now with sudafed. They've become way paranoid about it due to drug labs doing runs on it in pharmacies. You get the enth degree buying the stuff in most chemists now - and while someone like me usually gets it ok, someone like my bf who is unfortunately very thin, tall and dresses gothy, usually gets refused :/ He never touches drugs ever! Its so stupid.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 February 2006 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, dud for me. Buying a bunch of lemons, some honey and some paracetamol is far cheaper, better for you, and tastes much nicer.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 10 February 2006 10:58 (nineteen years ago)

Codeine makes you constipated.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

no shit

ken c (ken c), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

i'm boiling a kettle now.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

Ah hur hur Ken. ;P

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 10 February 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I have taken (over the past day or so) to consuming my Lemsip with a large quantity of honey and a large quantity of loganberry or raspberry jam stirred into the mix. It is the drink of the gods.

Just got offed, Sunday, 23 December 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

Another mug sits proudly on my desk. I am going to drink this even when not ill. Perhaps to save costs the Lemsip will be replaced by lemon juice.

Just got offed, Monday, 24 December 2007 07:55 (eighteen years ago)

The only issue is whether the jammy dregs are the best bit or the even better bit.

Just got offed, Monday, 24 December 2007 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

Hey guys, I'm still alive!

Maybe I was a little paranoid afterall.

ken c, Monday, 24 December 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

PHEW, Ken, I'd been worrying about you for nerly 2 years.

I had some lemsip the other night, because my nose/sinuses/throat were bunged up something horrible. It was like drinking radox, and it had no effect on me whatsoever. DUD.
