if you click on the "chats" link it tells you you do need google talk, but you can use other clients (like trillian) to connect to it.

Weird thing is that it first came up on my business gmail address and not the one that I use all the time.
And I always save my chats, especially when it involves my Chief of Staff and John Dean.

See I dont get this. I use gmail for this already, by just back and forth replying to people in gmail. It works pretty well, and is good for more in depth convos rather than surface IM chats. Gtalk is a bit bleh, I dont use it.

That may have been sort of kind of part of the problem. They were having trouble running this under https:// earlier, which the gmail notifier defaults to. But I think it cleared up now because it works fine for me after initially not working.

So I use my gmail address as a general-purpose email address to hand out to people I don't know very well, and I've also installed google talk, which I only use to send my boyfriend links and pictures, and I set my status to be quotes I think may amuse him from whatever I'm reading at the time.
This has been fine up until now because apparently I've never emailed anyone else with a gmail address before - until now. Apparently I have been "popping up" with "strange messages" even though I removed this person from my chat contacts and it's set to "only allow people that I've explicitly approved to chat with me and see when I'm online". And my current status message at the time they told me this was, of course, something I wouldn't really want to send to this 60-something woman.
First world problems, I guess. (Yeah, I need to block her, but I didn't want her emails to get blocked, or her to try to chat with me and be told I'd blocked her.)

no - i posted on the gmail thread about this. it is changed forever.
― j lol (surm), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)
if you want your AIM people to show up on your gmail list, you have to add them manually now. and they can no longer see that you are online, even after you add them.
― j lol (surm), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 19:27 (fourteen years ago)
you can also use website imo.im as a general chat server which combines all of your accounts onto one list. that is what i do, it is easier that way, and they can see you are online.
emo IM imho
― it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 20:07 (fourteen years ago)
kinda sucks that google just doesn't integrate this same chat aggregator like meebo, imo, etc.
