Gmail Chat

This is active in some of my gmail accounts but not others. I dont know how to get it to work. Like, how do I add people and how do I start a chat?
I like the 'Off the record' feature which makes sure the person you're talking to doesnt save the chat, because saving is kinda sicko.

has it appeared for you in the last 2 or 3 days?

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

yes, I think you need google talk installed, which I don't

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

It's appeared for me, but I hate chatting, so I can't answer.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

i've been wondering about the "off the record" feature -- can't someone just copy & paste the text or save it as a screenshot?

yeah, i guess so.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

i dont think you need google talk

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

saving chats is so aaronhz!!

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

i save chats occasionally. but only occasionally.

having fun with stockholm cindy on stage (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

i should revise that: saving chats, and then copying and pasting them to other people, is so aaronhz

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

We were talking about this on the Chicago thread this morning. It appears as if it's rolling out slowly: Amanda and Kelsey have it, but Jordan and I don't.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

i dont think you need google talk

if you click on the "chats" link it tells you you do need google talk, but you can use other clients (like trillian) to connect to it.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

sunny, try changing the language in your gmail settings to english (US). I read somewhere that some new features were US-only for some reason.

brian v, Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

(xp) Oh.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have google talk and it worked with me.

Weird thing is that it first came up on my business gmail address and not the one that I use all the time.

And I always save my chats, especially when it involves my Chief of Staff and John Dean.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

i got it, i only save my chats if i think they're underage and i might get to be on msnbc.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, I don't have google talk either and it's on one of my newer accounts - yet it's not on the account I've had since mid-04! But really, I'm not a big chat person anyway. Maybe this'll make be become one? Fears.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

for me it says i need google talk

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

google talk me mandz!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

ok, all this does is save chats you've had over the google talk network in your gmail account (you can access the google talk network with other clients). the "chats" link shows up whether you have google talk installed or not. I've never used google talk before but just installed it.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

i'm at work! i shan't!!!

GET A BRANE MORANS (ex machina), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Rrrobyn, you can always confine it to drunken chats.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

There's two different sets of features that are being rolled out. The first saves GTalk conservations, the second actually allows you to use GTalk from within the web browser as an extension to the email features. IM windows appear in the browser and can be detached to another browser window. Obviously some of us have both, others just have the first.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:52 (nineteen years ago)

ok i got the screen that said 'continue on the chat!' so i did and couldnt work anything out. this was last night. this morning i had suddenly quick contacts panel, which i assume is wear you start chats from

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if it works on Macs?

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

It appears as if it's rolling out slowly: Amanda and Kelsey have it, but Jordan and I don't.

Yes, I think they're rolling it out to girls first.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Mmm, Dan has it and so does my friend Dave. Sorry Jordan. You're not man enough for gmail chat.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have it yet, but I believe the new feature is based on a new protocol--it's not that it allows you to use gtalk from within the web browser, it's a whole new way to chat. You don't have to have any sort of chat client installed.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 9 February 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

POOP BITCH (Mandee), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

it's a whole new way to chat. You don't have to have any sort of chat client installed.

See I dont get this. I use gmail for this already, by just back and forth replying to people in gmail. It works pretty well, and is good for more in depth convos rather than surface IM chats. Gtalk is a bit bleh, I dont use it.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 9 February 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

That's a good point, Trayce.
But yeah, drunken chats are really where it's at as far as chats go.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 9 February 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm wondering where Google are going with all this. They're tryin to encourage people to centralise EVERYTHING they'd normally keep on a HD on the google servers - chat logs, email, now there's this search indexing thing that will cache an index of yr files on their servers too?

Its a bit tinfoil hat of me, but it makes me nervous, and I'm not storing nothin' important anywhere except on my own PCs thanks.

tehresa (tehresa), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

Mine was enabled last night. It only works in Firefox on the Mac. I like that it works with Gtalk so you can talk to people with iChat on one end and just an email browser on the other.

It also has great smileys. They sneak up on you, and when you're not watching they turn into little faces.

stet (stet), Friday, 10 February 2006 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

Just got the chat with my main gmail address. That's two out of three.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Boo, it doesn't work on Firefox for me yet. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

The main thing that creeps me out about this is the fear that even if I set my preferences for privacy people will still be able to see that I'm logged into gmail (and will then message me "hey you jerk I know you're online, you have no excuse for not writing back to my email").

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

And then on the other hand the online indicator is kinda pointless, because surely people just leave their gmail windows open for long stretches of time despite not being there to interact with them, right?

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 11 February 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

just appeared in mine.

tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 11 February 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

It appeared in my new account, but not in my stevieniiiixed one. Very weird.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 11 February 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

It appeared on mine (in my sig) this am. It's also put up a list of available names, a few of whom are the last ppl I'd want to chat w/! (none of them ilx ppl, btw) - how do I remove them?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 11 February 2006 12:00 (nineteen years ago)

You can block people. Just go over the name and you'll see it at the bottom of the box (change auto to block or something).

everyone I know irl has it now. I got my mom to get gmail b/c of this so that she can chat at work, and starting this week they've added gmail to the big list of blocked sites.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

Im not sure I understand this... googletalk has been around since year-dot. Is this just googlechat built into gmail's page somehow (ie web instead of client based?)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

yes, thereis alittle dhtml layer with chat right in it. it is quite something!

I am getting some kind of perverse pleasure out of clicking "I DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS" when my gmail notifier pops up in the morning. Sod ya, gmail.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 16 February 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I have it now, but I had to set it to US English. It popped up immediately once I'd done that. It's kind of annoying that you hover in that part of the screen and a load of stuff pops up. And nobody ever seems to be logged in at the same time as me. Oh well.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 February 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

That may have been sort of kind of part of the problem. They were having trouble running this under https:// earlier, which the gmail notifier defaults to. But I think it cleared up now because it works fine for me after initially not working.

wmlynch (wlynch), Thursday, 16 February 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

So I use my gmail address as a general-purpose email address to hand out to people I don't know very well, and I've also installed google talk, which I only use to send my boyfriend links and pictures, and I set my status to be quotes I think may amuse him from whatever I'm reading at the time.

This has been fine up until now because apparently I've never emailed anyone else with a gmail address before - until now. Apparently I have been "popping up" with "strange messages" even though I removed this person from my chat contacts and it's set to "only allow people that I've explicitly approved to chat with me and see when I'm online". And my current status message at the time they told me this was, of course, something I wouldn't really want to send to this 60-something woman.

First world problems, I guess. (Yeah, I need to block her, but I didn't want her emails to get blocked, or her to try to chat with me and be told I'd blocked her.)
