Not drumming, I guess. WOuld the house drummer not let him use his drums?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

he does a magic show!

chaki (chaki), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

GODDAMN ANTON FIG!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 10 February 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm *guessing* that he was injured / sick somehow (although he's pretty exuberant). Cos the other drummer knows all the parts (so was probably a tour backup dude, rather than the house drummer).

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it was just a goofy stunt. They are a pretty goofy bunch neh?

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 11 February 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

That was always one of the things I hated most about bands on Letterman is that Paul Schaeffer and co couldn't let a band play without adding their two cents to the mix. After the solos from the guys in the house band, it almost looked like tears were forming in Black Francis' eyes there.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 11 February 2006 03:56 (nineteen years ago)

i think this might have been some kind of weird musician's union thing. maybe not though

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 11 February 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

maybe we should email him. I bet he is easy to contact, not really a big star or anything. Anyone know his name and email address?

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 11 February 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh come on.. I'm sure the band totally wanted the Paul Schafer band integration... This is the same band (or at least frontman) that decided to write a set list, with encore... then proceed to play the setlist backwards... including the encore... and the pause... and the walking off stage.... (allegedly, black francis didn't understand why the audience were upset after they initially walked off stage at the time. *slaps head realizin' coulda hadda V8!*)

Dom iNut (donut), Saturday, 11 February 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

Those aren't drumsticks, they're Barbie dolls!

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 11 February 2006 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

really? I guess that guy hates women.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 11 February 2006 08:15 (nineteen years ago)

that solo isn't bad.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 11 February 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

He tucks in his t shirts. yeck

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Saturday, 11 February 2006 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

Forget the drummer--they had the old style, huge cardboard CD packaging! I almost forgot about those.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Saturday, 11 February 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Forget the drummer? I admire him for being able to get into the spirit of it and not look embarrassed.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps he had a condition that kept him from sitting down.

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

Back in the days of the 'longbox' wasn't it a contractual obligation that all bands appearing on the Letterman show *had* to play with Paul & Co's band? I remember reading somewhere how some bands were known to turn down an appearance for that reason. Perhaps it was a zany compromise, or Lovering just likes playing the Barbies.

sgs (sgs), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

or Lovering just likes playing the Barbies.

OTM. I only play guitar because everyone laughed at me for playing the hotwheels-track.

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 11 February 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I don't have Trompe le Monde; is Letterman's drummer at least playing the same beat as on the album? I'm sure they had to rehearse together, but I'm sure the song has been changed somewhat.

naus (Robert T), Saturday, 11 February 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

To my inexpert and tinnatused ears, it sounds very much the same beat.

I think the Letterman version might be slightly longer.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 11 February 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Paul's solo sucked, but at least he looked like he was into it. The guitar solo was kind of awesome. I forget his name... Sid? And Anton totally held his own. Nothing embarrassing about it.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Saturday, 11 February 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

The version on Letterman was definitely longer, to accommodate the Paul solo. Anton's drumming was certainly very good, though there were certainly more flourishes.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 11 February 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

why is this not available any more?

Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 19 February 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

I have the feeling all th e copywritten stuff on youtube.com is probalby getting taken off all the time.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Sunday, 19 February 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)
