If this has already been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find it, so apologies if so.

The obvious reasons for Bush bringing this up now withstanding...please join me in this umpteenth complaint fest.

The weirdest thing was noticing that there wasn't much talk on the blogs I was trawling about it. Now there's your cynicism!

There was a report on Channel 4 news last night which included the priceless quote, "The President is the owner of intelligence"

Ned,

Right after I saw a wire report on it yesterday, I went to Huff Post, and they had something else, and a puff thing on "the fight to keep ALL of Angelina in Vanity Fair spread."

The blogs did seem slow to jump, but now that "more details" are being supplied, they're picking it up. It's said that the plot was revealed in a general way four months ago...?? I missed that. Am I alone?

they've talked about foiled plots in the past, and they've talked about plots to fly planes into buildings on the West Coast, and they've talked about potential threats to the Library Tower (all way before 4 months ago). but all of this is sort of vague, and I still question how solid or specific the info they're working from is.

even if it's real, it seems clear given the immediate "Villaraigosa: wha?" storyline that they're trying to attack a young Dem rising star with big ambitions and the potential to put together the black-hispanic coalition, quite possibly not coincidentally just after one of the Bush-GOP capos arrives to run reelect for, as my Angeleno grandmother calls him, "the Nazi"

Yes, precisely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Or this coming out about the same time as the revelation that Cheney ordered the outing of Plame

Yes, precisely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

we don't have that revelation yet, only a more general one that does not necessarily implicate Cheney

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, precisely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 February 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

You like saying that, doncha?

Plus, er, Michael Brown is having fun in the Senate today, under oath and without claiming executive privilege...and having a good time blaming the White House and the DHS by the sounds of it!

I guess they liked the "NoLA Mayor blindsided by freak hurricane" pushback so much that they wanted to try out "LA Mayor blindsided by terror revelations"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 10 February 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

this time the "24" PR campaign has gone too far

i really hope that bush just watched season 2 of "24" and grimly thought, "that was a close one...surprised we haven't discussed this before", and immediately held a press conference. also: bush called it the "liberty tower" in his statement.

I do like that even the BBC World Service newsreader screwed up the name similarly, before correcting himself(and dubya)

Trenchant commentary at Washington Monthly:

There were several more plots that were intercepted and foiled by Bush's crack team, and I suppose it's safe to reveal a few of them now:

11. A group of terrorists plotted to steal chemical weaponry, take over Alcatraz and threaten San Francisco with annihilation.

12. A suspicious individual was tasked with selling bogus antibiotics to hospitals in a major European city.

13. Several colorful individuals plotted to replace a major West Coast city's Red Car public transportation system with automobiles and freeways in order to suffocate its inhabitants with smog.

14. An al-Queda asteroid was found hurtling toward...

Wait. I've said too much already.

Holy shit. If this is the reference I think it is, awesome.
