Easy to make fun of, but coca leaves are a far, far weaker drug than cocaine and have been an integral part of Bolivian life since well into pre-Columbian times. Chewing them eases altitude sickness (among other things) and Bolivia is second only to Tibet in average altitude.

"A coca leaf weighing 100 grams contains 18.9 calories of protein, 45.8 mg of iron, 1540 mg of calcium and vitamins A, B1, B2, E and C, which is more than most nuts, according to a 1975 study by a group of Harvard University professors."

A friend of mine brought coca tea bags back from Peru and I had a stiff cup a couple years ago. It was... very, very, nice. I felt alive, in direct communion with the gods, and very active. Make mine coca.

I highly doubt any coca leaf weighs 100 grams. Have you ever seen a picture of bush? The leaves are tiny.

according to a 1975 study by a group of Harvard University professors

"We're going to Bolivia to, uh, study the coca leaf's nutritional value. Yup. Yessiree. That's what we gonna do."

18.9 calories of protein

At 4 calories per gram of protein, this adds up to less than 5 grams of protein out of 100. OK, but hardly "more than most nuts". For example, peanuts have about 18 grams of protein per 100 grams.

Yeah, but have you ever tried snorting them?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 10 February 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)
