What was this film?

It's a distant memory of a movie - I saw it when I was about five-years-old in the early 1970's, and all I remember was this boy used to say something to himself like "You can do it, (Dusty Brown?)", and then this would boost his strentgh and give rise to a mystical change in fortune. Anyone know the picture?

Also, there was another movie, or it might have been the same one (sorry to be so vague), which centred on a boy who used to enter into a magical world via a toy boy-sized red car (or it may have been a box) in his bedroom.

I think you're right! Shame, it doesn't look like it was ever released on DVD...

Having read more abou the story on Wikipedia, it strikes me that Jamie and the Magic Torch owed quite a bit to the Phantom Tollbooth.

Yes, that's it alright, thanks! ... "Picked on by the other boys in his class for being a "shrimp", Duffy Moon develops talents and powers that enable him to meet unexpected challenges."

fourteen years pass...

Help me out here...a bumper-car scene to a new-wavy song, but not the bumper car scene in Adventureland. I know there's another film with a similar scene. I thought it was Take This Waltz, but I can't find anything to support that.
