hey mid-atlantic/empire staters/new englanders - enjoyin' the snow? i'm dog-sitting for friends in harlem, their l'il beagle loves the stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 12 February 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I heard about this from a friend yesterday, who said she was going to hole up under blankets last night and read the new Stephen King, which seems appropriate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 February 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

his book about *cough* cellphones?

i'm guessing this might help nbc's olympic ratings.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 12 February 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

My brother flew in yesterday for some kind of toy retailers convention, his hotel is two miles away from the center and he says no taxis or buses are running. I was supposed to tag along for a free room, but thank god I didn't.

You got me. It's his eighteenth book this year, yes?

milo snow is great!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 12 February 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm venturing out into the blizzard right now, in a Subaru. If I didn't have it, no dice. But I'm cat-sitting for some friends and both cats insisted on going out last night. I didn't believe the weather report so I let them go. Oops. They can get under the house, so they'll be fine. But still. A tiny glimmer of responsibility flickers within me.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

i have to get this 12 person van on loan from my employer back to work, somehow. otherwise, im thrilled. ive been waiting for winter to show its ugly face round these parts.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

It doesn't look all that blizzardy out there to me. I'm wondering if I can use this as an excuse not to go to the gym. It's not (I think) that I really don't want to go, I just don't want to deal with wet shoes, or putting a pair of boots in my locker, or the overall potential for wet sloshy clothes going into the locker. I might at least take a walk around.

Anyway, it's kind of nice. I slept much better than usual last night, and I wonder if it was mostly because of the way snow makes everything so much quieter.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

just went out for a walk. must be a foot deep. avenues have been plowed, side streets not so much. overall too soft and powdery for good snowballs or sledding at the moment, might try later :(

earlier this am woken by lightening flashes and LOUD thunder?!

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

I had to be in the club to oversee a children's show, but it got cancelled. There are worse ways to wake up than with a olly olly oxen free phone call.
And yeah, there was lightning all last night. It's a thundizzard.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 February 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

earlier this am woken by lightening flashes and LOUD thunder?!

They did say there might be thunder--in fact they used the word "snow-thunder" which I don't remember seeing before. I didn't hear any.

This is fabulous, the trekking, the shovelling, the bundling up -- it's finally WINTER!! Sadly I will have no excuse not to go to work tomorrow since I only have to get 4 blocks to the subway. Hmmph.

Movies: check. Groceries: check. George RR Martin Book 4: check. Flannel sheets & pajamas: check. Hurrah!

Laurel, Sunday, 12 February 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

neighbors please tell me if BAM is open! I can't get a person on the line and really want to get out of my house and watch 2 plus hours of movietime!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 12 February 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

took the plastic saucers to riverside park, snow's still coming down and damn it's deep. teh kid got one great ride: standing up until he hit a little bump and then falling back on his ass while staying in the sled and continuing the ride sitting down. neat!

came back to do some cooking. gotta feeling there's a bottle of red wine around here somewhere just asking to be opened.

I walked by those squat little Spanish mission (?) style houses at 21st or 22nd and Green, and someone was out shoveling snow with salsa playing. (I didn't recognize it.)

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 12 February 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Got the kitties back into the house. The Subaru is Supercar. Not very deep here on the Vineyard, but very blustery. Hardly anyone's out. I saw a carload of young Brazilian guys do a total 360 right in front of me. They piled out of the car, laughing and pumping their fists in the air, crazy with fear-adrenaline.

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Sunday, 12 February 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

I love blizzards. I went out and trudged to the grocery store this morning - everything still covered and my neighborhood quiet except for the occasional scrape-scrape of a shovel. Beautiful. Then I watched Nashville. Will now proceed to burning lots of vinyl to CD while drinking hot chocolate.

Nothing like driving to work in a blizzard. 20 inches here at my home, most of which accumulated while I was out. Thank god for condo living.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Sunday, 12 February 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

15 inches in auburn, ma. just finished shoveling out the cars for tomorrows commute.

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

i wouldn't call this a blizzard, the accumulated snow is just way too light. and the precipitation wasn't too violent, decent visibility. plenty of fun though.

no bones, Sunday, 12 February 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

up here in NH this is the biggest fuckin letdown of a blizzard i have ever seen

Heh, it's SPRING here. I was bored out of my mind in my apartment, so I decided screw my horked achilles tendon, I'm taking some painkillers & going going on a walk. Great day here for it, lots of cherry blossoms coming out along 1st, a few crocuses, and some tulip buds. And really sunny, so the Olympics and Cascades were out on either side of the city. I can only walk sloooooowly so I had lots of time to soak up the sunshine.

I do kind of miss awesome 2-feet-of-snow-overnight snow days, though. It's so beautiful and quiet. Everytime Seattle gets a smidge of snow, it's melted by the afternoon.

Jody, where is that sign that says Samoa? I saw that and the little metro dispenser which I took at first to be a full-size Metro entrance and thought you were passing off photos from some snowed-in Scandanavian town as Brooklyn.

It was great walking across New Haven Green this morning. The snow was positively sparkly with all the sunlight. I feel a bit decadent to have all this, plus summer fruit - peaches from Chile, which are as hard as stone when you buy them but turn delicious after a couple of days. (I think there's a Mountain Goats song about this - remotely.) There was a fire alarm this morning and Joan explained about snow shoes. She's a cross country and a downhill skier because she grew up in Buffalo. Apparently, it's quite acceptable to ski across New Haven Green. Some people just ski right out their front door. I haven't witnessed it, but so I'm told.
