i just watched the last ep of the BBC1 "virgin queen liz" and i am tryin to remember what film/tv series it was i saw essex's rebellion in recently (possibly not MADE recently, just shown recently)

in this one now the rebellion wz v.pitiful indeed; in the earlier one thet reach the palace and elizabeth shouts to them from the battlements, and one of the rebel's cradles his little son when the latter is shot

also we can rank: anne-marie duff, cate blanchett, glenda jackson and whoever else

I liked the Mirren portrayal. It was a relaxed drama, it felt true to life, melodrama mixing with everyday tedium. Didn't bother watching the Duff one.

There's a book by Lytton Strachey with this title, I think.

I thought the Blanchett movie was fantastic! I watched two nights in a row while I was stuck at my parents'.

The ambassador in that photo looks like Serge from System of a Down.

Doesn't manga Fiennes play some guy called Dudley in the Cate Blanchett film, and thus not Essex (whose name was, I think, Devereaux)?

Maybe I have been at the crack again.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

yes essex doesn't actually appear in the CB film -- which only goes up to the point where QE decided she wd stay a virgin

mark s (mark s), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 13 February 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

A French ambassador who's in the film for about 10 minutes total. He comes to broker a marriage between Elizabeth and the Duke of Anjou. (I have seen this movie way too many times).

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 13 February 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
saw the first half of the mirren one tonite, and i loved it, for the following reasons

1) her seductive qaulity, her wit, and her fury, made her seem more real to me, then for example the glacial coldness of cate blanchett or what ever the hell bette davis was doing (i havent seen glenda, yet)
2) the violence was really hard core, the double chop of queen marys head, the disembowleing
3) the sheer boredom of the court, the intriuge, and how limited it was--i keep being obsessed about the symbolic meanings of the minuet, the control of the body, the control of the state, etc
4) it made her hatred of catholics seemed to be an extension, a narrative, that came from natural sources, the intriuge of mary the scott, adn the armada, etc...
5) how it complicated the gender signifers of elizabeth, how she played femme when it suited, and man when it suited, and how she was something singualr and different...
6) how unpretty (ie unstylised) it was

we get the elizabeth we deserve, i think...the movie is remade every decade or so, like joan of arc or hamlet, as a way to put a mark into where our progess is eurocentrically at least...

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 23 April 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

and i really liked the performances of whoever played the duke of anjou, and mary queen of scots...

and the rise of the privy council, as well...
